Survived the long day including 5:30 am swim, two meetings and then helping move heavy furniture up and down stairs before finally heading over and shooting two clooege basketball games. Tomorrow at 9 I have to go "herd some cats" ie coaching second grade basketball for my grandaughter and her teammates. It is successful when you can get them to remember which basket is theirs  most of the game. It is coed and pretty fun to try and help them learn and have fun.

pbrown70 - 2011-01-21 2:55 PM I met a bunch of local tri people and they invited me to go for a ride on sunday. they said they where going to do 50-60 mile ride. Does anyone have any recommendation for me. This will be more than double any distance I've ever done.

doubling your distance will be very tough.  if they are trained, regular riders, the ride will average 18-22 MPH.  But talk to them first, let them know you are a beginner and are interested in riding, maybe there is an A ride and B ride (a big ride in my town has a A B and C ride with 50+ people on sundays), maybe their ride is a loop and you do one loop with them and then ride a bit more on your own, maybe there is a good cut off.  My tri club does a 75-80 mile ride most saturdays beginning in the spring as alot of them do IMLP,but there are cut ins and cut offs to shorten the ride.  jsut make sure you know what youa re getting into.  you dont wan tto be 20 miles from home and totally shot and calling your spouse or buddy for a lift home, I've been there and done that, they always laugh at you.  ALso, make sure you know how to change a flat and carry a couple extra tubes and CO2 cartridges.  have fun!

Also remember it will be easier riding with the pack than solo.  You'll use about 30% less energy drafting than pulling on your own.

Also remember you don't have to take a turn pulling, you can just go along for the ride.

Heading out in a minute to attempt breathing underwater again.  Ha.  Kidding, but that's what it felt like last week with all the water I inhaled everytime I turned to the side to try to catch a breath.  This week will be much more people.  We'll see how it goes.

And then 2 birthday parties today, and 2 tomorrow.  I might have to start eliminating some of my friends, just to avoid all these kid birthday parties.!! Laughing

Hello to all and happy training!!!!  As this is a "rest week" for me, I only have to get in a 3 mile run and a 5 mile run.  Then, 3 weeks of my last build phase, and 2 weeks of taper going into the Hyannis half marathon!  With Kel as my "pacer", I'm really hoping for a PR at this race!!

I am definitely pushing myself harder during workouts, and I'm already seeing improvements.  My training pace has improved by a minute or more since last year, and for the most part, it's comfortable.

Probably the hardest thing this year is trying to maneuver workouts around this horrible weather.  More snow predicted for this week.  I'm over it already!!!

Long work day today, but taking my gym bag with me and if I get out in time, heading over for a swim after work.

Off tomorrow and getting in a run or swim (if not today) and maybe some trainer time while watching football.

OK, so much better at swim today, being only my second time ever, trying to do lap swim.  I officially suck at swimming.   Unfortunately, I can only swim once a week.  The pool don't open for my regular 5am workouts.  so looks like it is just saturdays.

I did a little better with breathing, but still taking in a little bit of water.  I have no idea how far I swam.  Continued for about 30 minutes, but with plenty of breaks.

There were about 6 people today, clearly all experience swimmers, so I just paid attention to them.

Jeff-concentrate on rollling your hips when you are swimming. That will help you be more on your side when you breath. A good drill to improve your roll is called "big strokes" and that is one where you exagerate the part of the stroke that is out of the water (the recovery) and realy raise your arm in a high exagerated motion where the arm is high out of the water. I hope I explained that where you understand, but it really helps to feel the roll to each side

Off day today. I spent an hour herding my cats at basketball. They actuallly did pretty good and we only had one little girl who told me she was not going to do anything because the only reason she was there was her mother signed her up.
Husbands birthday so steaks and potatos tonight before I have to run off and shoot another basketball game. I am feeling sore from the heavy lifting yesterday. I had a bad evening eating and will not bother to log it because I already have an idea it will not be good. I grabbed a hotdog and chips to eat before the game at the college and then snarfed up a slice of pizza and a glass of wine when I came home, topped off by three double stuffed oreas and milk

With my training plan starting on Monday, I have been working on building up to my appropriate cadences in the bike and run.

After a couple of runs and rides at the higher cadences, I have realized that my hip flexors are incredibly weak and cranky.

I rode for 1:20 today at 90rpm average and, by the end, my inner thighs and lower  back were on fire and twitching.

These first few weeks are going to be rough while I'm adapting to serious training again.

Yup, I am a CT guy.  Plainfield, CT, northeast part of the state.

Artist, thanks for the tip.  I can use anything for tips on swimming.  The strength isn't the problem, it's the breathing properly, so that'll help

One more tip-really work on exhaling. You need to make sure you are exhaling while on the pull so when you put your head up all you need to do is breath in. If you are feeling winded-exhale just alittle more forecfully and it will help.

Plainfield, is that even Conn?  more like Rhode ISland
If youd like, your more than welcome to join me for a swim and I can giveyou a few thoughts that have worked for me.  I am no swim guru, but I am totally self taught and have gone from nothing typically back-of-the-front of the pack in 4 years. maybe we can even convice Kelly (a real swimmer to giveus some tips)

You missed Kelly teaching the kids to butterfly last night.  Those lats pop out and she looks like an 80s East German female olympian.

I've really struggled to get motivated so far this year and last week i totally fell of the wagon. I know that exercising will help improve my mood but i lack the motivation to get me out there in the first place. Having a house move mean i miss most of the Tri season hasnt helped much either. Other than "just do it" anyone got suggestions on how to gee myself up?

45 Minutes on the trainer this morning, and 25 on the treadmill.  Free showtime for three months with Direct TV is helping run on that thing.

My focus by the end of today is to import an actual training plan.  My consistency has been paying off though.  I feel I am getting stronger and faster.  Maybe a slow process, but it's working

Pretty close to RI.  about 10 minutes away, and about 25 from Mass.  Do you swim in New Haven, and where?  I sell insurance for a living, primarily small-large commercial accounts, and dabble in personal lines a bit.  My point is, I cover most of CT, RI, and parts of MA.  Actually, I stay out of Fairfield County, and Northwestern CT for the most part.

Do you swim during the day?  Pending my schedule, I could meet somewhere out that way during the day.  Nights are tough with two young kids.
