gdctex - 2011-01-01 12:42 PM Race planning question:

I have a half marathon in a couple of weeks for which I would like to figure out how to plan out a race strategy.

Any suggestions on links to guidelines on planning for a race to as pacing, zones, etc. based on goals.   My main goal is to improve on my first race last month.

When is the race?

If you have time, I suggest doing a "FTP" 5k and then use that number to figure out your Vdot.  Once you enter your pace in the calculator link attached below, it will give you pace numbers for all sorts of distances of races.  I have used this process for a while and it is amazing how accurate the numbers can be.  For example, my last 15k, I was withing in :01 per mile at the finish and right at my breaking point......

http://www.runbayou.com/jackdPrint.htm

Dino

The race is two weeks from tomorrow (the 16th).

What does FTP mean?  I have used the link before.  So I should run a 5K some time this week at max effort and plug that time into the tool to get a pace for my half marathon?

So is the winner of the Rose Bowl going to be the first team that decides to play defense.

And I've decided the best way to take care of my knee is to put a cold beer on it, then drink some, back to the knee, rinse and repeat.

Glen have you ever used the McMillian running calculator?

http://www.mcmillanrunning.com/mcmillanrunningcalculator.htm

For me I've found it to be fairly accurate.  Enter a time for another distance race and see what it says you should be able to run another distance in.

It think it overestimates a bit but should give you something to go by.

I have not used this one.  I put in a recent 5K training run which was my best so far giving me a 9:52 pace for a 2:09 time for a half marathon. My first half last month was 2:17:58.   I was already thinking about targeting for a 10 minute pace but was not sure that was reasonable. This makes me feel a bit more confident that it is realistic.

So, I use this as my target pace.  Should I monitor my HR during the race, or just go by how I feel?  My biggest concern is pushing too hard too soon.

And based on my training runs, I will be in Z3 at the pace that MacMillian generated......cool.  Amazing how the numbers work on this.

Since pretty much every running race is a new pace for me, I tend to start off slightly slower for a bit (for half marathon 3 miles) and if I still feel good after that, then drop it down, and monitor RPE and HR.

So maybe start off for 2-3 miles at 10:00 pace and if you feel good, HR is in a good spot, drop it down to a 9:50 pace or faster and keep going with that.

I agree, if you can stay in Z3 until mile 10-11 drop the hammer for the rest of the race.

X4!!!!! Nice and simple....not easy at mile 10-11 regardless, so why not make the last 2-3 miles worth the price of registration! Good luck, Glen! In my experience, I think the MacMillan calculator is useful, but predicted times can be a bit faster because it assumes a higher volume of training than most of us are able to train as triathletes. Except Linda of course!

Zone 3 tends to  be WIIIIIIIIIIIIIDE!!  If you know your LT, get a couple beats below it and let 'er rip.  I dream of the day I can do that again.  Have fun Glen.

Even with the Badgers in this group, I have to go with TCU.  Andy Dalton graduated from a local high school.

I did have the VO2 test done earlier this year, so feel pretty good about my zones, etc.

Thanks to everyone for the great input/advice!

Well i didn't stay up and welcome the New Year in I am either getting old or I figured by now the New year has the hang of it. Anyway was up at 4:30am out of the house by 4:45am and drove to
La Junta, Colorado around an hour away jumped in the pool for a 1,400m swim then drove home waited til it got a bit warmer then off for a 9+mile run. Hope to start on the right foot this year and improve my numbers.

I hope everyone had a Great New Years Day.
