New user ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Tim, JenD, and Charlie - EXCELLENT job! It's been a few days since I've been on here. So much to catch up on! So I bit the bullet and decided to go with the Look/Ultegra setup. A little more than what I wanted to spend but figured that I cheaped out on my first bike so I'd spend the $ on this one. Besides, when am I gonna get another bike, right? Coach - just like you said! As for training this weekend, I had a 2 hour ride on Saturday morning (winds going south were BRUTAL!), came home and felt feverish so the rest of the afternoon was spent on the couch in a haze of Nyquil. Felt better in the evening and went for a 6 mile run yesterday. Had some stomach issues around mile 5 but made it the rest of the way with no big issues. Last night my legs were pretty sore, mainly my left knee, which I had ACL reconstruction on back in 03. I've gotta remind myself to wear my knee band on my next long run. First tri coming up in 3 weeks. Gonna try to get some more time in the pool (more than once a week, ha!) I'll try to remember the "don't think about breathing" bit b/c I think that's what gets me in trouble. I'll be slowest in the Masters group but oh well, someone's gotta be the slowest, right? Hope everyone has a great week! sarah |

Hey, congrats on your new bike. You will love it. And I started wearing a knee strap full time on my left and during bikes and runs on my right and no more tendinitis. I also rolls, stretch, ice, etc. But I truly think the simple strap does wonders in my case. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good Morning Team. I hope all is well with everyone. Got up early and did 5 k and have a swim scheduled for tonight (with some yard work mixed in and some junior golf mentoring - busy day ahead). Heather - a round of golf before your run - AWESOME - as the golf guy in the group - I have to say - Triathlete and Golfer - YOU ROCK Deb - hope the fit works for you. Sarah - same boat here (no pun intended) regarding the swim portion of the race. Last in my age group would be ok, I just want to get out of the water on my own with no help from a boat LOL. Coach - hope you are feeling better. Have a great day everyone. KC |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Great race Jen! Those are great overall and age group standings. You should be really proud of yourself. As far as the swimming with your head out of the water- did you just get nervous during the race or is that something you were doing during your training in the pool? I give you alot of credit for swimming that far like that - my swim group does the "tarzan drill" which is basically swimming with your head above water and after 100Y I am pretty tired. If you can work on keeping your head down, your swim times are gonna decrease like crazy. Good job again. jend702 - 2011-05-01 9:36 AM Sorry guys I've been MIA prepping for the race yesterday. Mann I have lots of reading to catch up on. So the great news is...I completed my first Sprint Triathlon! My goal was to finish under 3hrs. As you all know my major concern was the swim. I wish I would have took swimming lesson. The cut off times were 800 m Swim=45min 22.5k Bike=2hrs 5k Run=1hr My over all ranking was 231 out of 649. My division ranking was 59 out of 125. My swim time was 31min. I sucked and swam 85% with my head above water. I beat the cut off time and only held on to one paddle boarder for a min and 1 kayak for a sec. I was pushed off course by the current and had to tire out getting back. Over all I'm content with my swim. My Bike time was 50:51. I tired to make up time on the bike and didn't do too bad. It was very windy but I fought through it. Avg speed 16.5mph I only lost 1mph because of the wind so I was very happy. My run time was 29:27. A tad slower pace then what I wanted but running on trails in gravel and rocks freak me out because of my ankle. But once I got back on the pavement I hauled a$$ to the finish line. My over all time was 1:57 With a 9.30 pace!!!! I am so happy!!! I found out they don't call this Iron Girl for no reason. The sprint I watch 2weeks ago seemed a lil less intense then Iron Girl because there wasn't as many hills. I added major hills into my running a month ago and I was happy I did. Iron girl=hills hills hills. I will do this event again next year to beat my times (swim lessons, more OWS, and trail running shoes). For now I will now begin my training for the Oly this Oct. I hope you guys enjoyed your weekend and have great training days! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thank to everyone for the congratulations - it means alot. I am trying to determine when I should put my training into high gear again. I took yesterday off and might try to do an easy recovery bike ride today. Overall I feel good besides my knees being a little sore. I just don't want to push it too hard and get injured. I am actually a liitle behind on my HIM training for July 17 so I need to get going ASAP. Thoughts? Also I was looking at my splits and I was not as far off as I thought I was. I think my mind was playing tricks on me with negative thoughts once the 4:00 pace group passed me at mile 21. I needed to be 3:00:00 at mile 20 and I was 3:01:14 and like Dave mentioned I was building up a nice cushion. But mentally I just kind of gave up after 21. Overall I am really happy with the PR but still a little upset at myself for not pushing harder the last 6 miles. But then I go back to how I felt and I just don't think I had enough in the tank to keep an 11:00/ mile. The last six might as well ahve been another 20 miles. So my question is how much do you think it is mental or is it actually physically having nothing left? I know there is a balance you have to find where you don't push yourself too hard yet not hard enough. Do I need to work on my mental toughness and if so how do you simulate that without actually harming yourself? I think my endurance "toughness" has improved significantly from 3-4 years ago so is it just training and race experience? |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Wish I could help you Tim, but since I've never gone that king of distance before, I've never hit that wall. But since you didn't collapse after the race and had to be strechered off, you probably had some gas left in the tank, but would the effort really have been worth the outcome?
Nice pic BTW!! Edited by kdevarenne 2011-05-02 11:04 AM |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hello Peeps! I think I am caught up at work so now I can play for a minute on BT. Mary: nice mini tri, 19.02 mph is great, Dang we have another person in the group that is faster than me. I may fired as mentor. Nice JOB!! Jen: You were worried about finishing and you were top 1/3??? wish I could do that! You will be just fine in the swim, good idea to learn a couple other strokes (side, breast) as they are great when you need alittle break. Way to go TRIATHLETE! Deb: what saddle did you get? Nice training weekend!
Caleb: Hopefully you can find some cool safe routes around your new house!

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Charlie: Great run: how do your legs feel today, a nice swim or slow walk is great after a long run. KC, how will your tri training go once the golf season is in full swing? Just wondering Kevin, nice brick! Those 1st few steps are always the worst! Heather, I was just giving you a hard time. Some feel you should never use them but I am in the camp I love to have something distracting me from the boredom of training. Tim: I would baby the run for atleast a week (slow runs nothing hard) and focus on the bike and run. Your legs will need recovery for atleast a week or two if you pushed it hard on the race. Mile 21-23 suck as you are ready to be done only to have to run another 10k. Very hard on the mind! Either way you did great so focus on what you did right and work on your issues. Sounds like nutrition/water went well?
Deb do you carry tools to adjust on the fly? If you are still working on your setup carry a couple tools to adjust seat/post/stem and make suttle changes to see how it affects you. Did anything hurt or just not liking the bike ride? Sara: Awesome news on the new bike, be sure to post pics once you get it! Make sure to ice after long runs, I try to do it atleast 3 times per night if knee/leg sore. Don't worry about being the slowest in the group, just think how many 10's of millions of people out there you are faster than.

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey Team. I see the heart doctor again tomorrow to go over the results from the 24 hour bp monitoring. Hopefully we can figure out what is up and put it behind me. Coach - I have been thinking about that question lately - what am I going to do when the golf weather arrives and I have to be honest - at this time I am not giving up on tri training - I like it too much Off to the pool - have a great night everyone. KC |

![]() | ![]() Sounds like everyone had a good weekend! Congrats all around. Got in a 25min run this morning before work. Had an 11 hour surgery today, which is tons of time to be on your feet! Forgot to foam roll after this weekend, so my legs were feeling it. I think that's all that is going to happen today. Maybe a 30 min ride on the trainer... Looking forward to this oly being done in a month! Sprint training is easier on the legs and the sleep schedule!!! |

Good luck at the Doc tomorrow, let us know what he says. I was just wondering because when I did my first IM I quit golf completely. I found the 3-5 hours took away too much time from training not to mention everyone I play with has a few beverages when playing. The last couple years I did play a couple more times but kind of stinks when you play a round drink water then have to go for a 2 hr run after a long hot round. If I would get my lazy butt up early I could get the workouts in the AM then not worry about it. |

What type of MD are you doing 11hr surgeries?? sounds like neuro or heart? I can't imagine standing and concentrating that long. Hang in there and we will get you into the HIM or full IM's... :-) |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Coach - The legs are pretty sore and I was hoping to get a swim in but to be honest after coaching my son's little league game I just felt like watching TV. I have a run planned tomorrow and I will do the distance but at a very slow pace. This is one of the biggest races in the area so it was a lot of fun today walking around and having people congratulate me for finishing. Next up a 5K first weekend in June! Really hoping to finish under 30 minutes. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() The seat I got was a Terry 'liberator'. It's nothing exciting but for $15 its worth a shot. Howver, the guy that did my fit wanted me to stay with the seat I had and see how I like it now it's been adjusted, before I swap it out. I was VERY uncomfortable on the seat as it was. VERY. Keith - am I ready for my race? uhm NO. I want to puke when I think about it lol. Are you ready for yours - aren't you doing the mudder this weekend? I have 2 things giving me extra stress over the next couple of days - 1) I have the season opener on Sunday, and the water temp is meant to be FREEZING. the RD sent out an email today saying the time had been shifted to 9am to allow the air temp to come up, and that he advised booties and neoprene caps. I believe the water temp is 'almost' 60. I'm horrified. 2) completely tri unrelated - my daughter has her junior prom on Saturday. Again, horror is one of the emotions I am feeling.
KC - hope all goes well with the doc tomorrow. Be sure to keep us updated. Edited by cheekymonkeys1 2011-05-02 10:27 PM |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() This was a very easy weekend of training. Due to staying in a hotel, weather and scheduled golf time I was only able to get in a 1.5 hour bike ride on Sat. SO, I am very rested!! My monday swim was very strong and theevning run was relaxed. Looking forward to a brick this afternoon. KC - I played on 2 of the best courses I have ever been on. Fuzzy Zeoller courses near Louisville. I am glad it was so nice, because I won't be seeing a golf course for a while - Can't justify 4 hours of biking AND 4 hours on the gollf course on a Saturday to my wife. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good Morning Team. Charlie - sorry I must have missed the fact you had a race - congrats! Deb - sounds cold brrr and more importantly - good luck with the stress of the junior prom LOL. Brian - sounds like you had a great weekend of golf and fun with friends - that is awesome. It is raining here again today and I don't know when I am going to play again. I am supposed to be playing in a Pro Am this Saturday with 3 friends but if the weather does not get any better if may turn into a fishing derby! OK - I have a friend who is looking to buy a wet suit and I am going to steer him toward Xterra - anyone have any coupon codes I can give him? Thanks team. Run and swim for me today I thinkg. KC |

You could not possibly be old enough to have a daughter in high school. I do have a cap for cold water. Good investment. No on booties, never tried. In cold water, I got whoozy. Thought it was an exertion issue until I read an article that said cold water on the inner ear can affect balance. Might try ear plugs.
