Beautiful painting...I miss going to Utah. We regularly head to Moab for some offroading but I haven't been in a couple of years.

Easy recovery run this morning and a super long swim tonight (that's going to be wicked fun).

At this point, I'm just trying to recover as best I can and keep it together through my big build block.  Just wish I didn't have to actually work and could take mid-day naps.

I also thought it was a photo on first look.  Incredible!

I too have not an ounce of artistic ability.  Wish I did, but I don't.  So I'm always amazed to see what others paint, draw, or whatever.

Wow - it's humid here today!  Got up early for a run and was dripping wet in the first 5 minutes.  Not looking forward to the summer. =(

interval wednesday.  bike this morning, run at lunch.  My legs are beat.  Heading to Vegas tomorrow at 4:30 AM for a conference in full compression gear.  Hope to get lots of sleep on the plane.  Plan to run the strip, should be good for people watching.  I'll probably be the only person asking if I can use the Caesar's pool at 6 AM for swimming laps on saturday mornign.  Pissed I am missing the Target Training preride of Rev3.

Ok, I need some advice.

After Sunday's long run, which happened to be a very hilly run, I developed shin splints.  I woke up this morning and they were gone.  Then, after my run today, I began to feel a strain in my groin, and my piriformis muscle started bugging me again.  I'm sitting here now and my groin aches.  It's the same area I injured back in Jan.  It's not injured, but it's definitely strained.

I'm supposed to race a half marathon on Sunday.  Would you still race it if you were me?  My first triathlon is in 4 weeks.

I have a 1 1/2 hour bike scheduled for tomorrow and an easy 5k scheduled for Friday.  I was going to take Saturday off before the HM.  My husband thinks I ought to ditch the bike and 5k and just rest/ice/nsaid it for the next 2 days.  He also thinks I should jog a short 2-3 miles on Saturday to see if the strain is still lingering.  If it is...then I'm out.  If it feels ok...then I'm in.  What if it's borderline though?

Sigh.  I hate my body.  Obviously I'm injury-prone.

I am injury prone as well . . . just tripped my way up concrete stairs and whacked my patellar tendon.  Wanted to just sit down and cry!!!

I ran my 1/2 on Saturday knowing it could put me out, but I am not the smartest when it comes to sitting out.  The pain went away after 3 miles and I was good, but I am paying for it NOW and the last few days.

I guess I am getting sick of getting injured and losing patience quickly and continue to do races.

Advice:  stretch, stretch, stretch and roll, roll, roll until race day and even before the race and at the very least it will help relax things

I think biking and swimming are fine (and that you should continue doing them because they'll help get blood to your injured areas without causing additional stress / damage).  I would also be careful with the NSAIDs.  NSAIDs help may you feel better and bring down inflammation, but they can also delay actual healing, plus there are other ways to deal with inflammation (ice, ultrasound, fish oil and cherries).

With regard to fish oil, if you don't already, I would really consider taking an omega 3 fish oil supplement.  Omega 3s work as an antioxidant and have been shown to decrease internal inflammation abd help protect your joints.  I also take glutamine.  Its an amino acid that supports the immune system and protects muscle tissue.  Taking both of these may help with some of your muscular issues.  I know I'm just one person and correlation does not equal causation, but since I bagan taking these regualrly a year ago, I have not had any injuries and have had a pretty high volume trianing load.

With regard to the 1/2, I would play it by ear.  Perhaps bring a cell phone with you and if its not working have a bail out plan.  There is nothing wrong with a DNF.

So impressive.  Reminds me of the scenic views in New England my aunt used to paint.  I could never catch on in any of the lessons she gave me.  I'll continue drawing stick people!  Nice work

Since I have very limited experience with any racing, most of it XC mountain bike races, I am looking for some assitance with proper etiquette, etc, for next weekends duathlon.  I am doing a team comp (wish I singed up alone).  I am doing the cycling. I know Kelly has done this race in the past, but my questions are not course specific. This will be my first road race.

  1. I believe USAT rules apply, which will not allow drafting.  How close is considered drafting? Not really sure how spread out this will get, but want to make sure I have it right.
  2. When passing (hopefully I get a chance), does it matter what side.  Probably a stupid question.  In MTB, you pass wherever you can
  3. There are some stop signs and one traffic light i noticed on this course. I assume there will be some sort of volunteer at those sections, hopefully holding traffic????
  4. And since this is a team comp, any idea what to expect for a transition?

Thanks for the help

They will likely go over the rules and penalties prior to the race start. But all of the tri's I've done, drafting is defined as within 3 bike lengths. Once you enter that space, you MUST pass within 15 seconds. If you are the one being passed, you have to ensure you get behind the 3 bike length distance within the 15 seconds also, or now YOU would be guilty of drafting.

Pass on the left, just like a car. And you probably cannot cross the centerline of the road.

I'd assume they will have volunteers at intersections to control traffic, but unless it's a completely closed course, you still need to keep your eyes peeled.

Can't help much with transition.

GOOD LUCK and HAVE FUN!

Morning everyone.  Heading out this morning for a 2 hour tempo ride, a long day at work trying to finish a memo in opposition and then running hills tonight.

Super super tired (again).  Thinking I might be able to sleep in a little on Sunday, which would be a good thing.

Morning folks.  It actually rained here last night.  Maybe it will again later, and maybe my water bill will start dropping.  Good gracious it costs a lot to keep the yard green when it's not raining.  Good thing is it just doesn't effect training one bit.  It's supposed to be 90 ish with only 65% humidity for IMTX on the 21st.  Good thing it's staying a little cool.  Tongue out  I may try and get out there to see some friends finish up.  Some local companies are giving away entries to next years event.  Crossing my fingers.

Yesterday was the best "feel" to a swim workout I've had in a while.  The monotony of pool swimming kills me sometimes.

I think the rule is 3 lengths back, pass on the left, and I'm not sure about how transition for relays go as I've never participated on a team.  I've also never attended a pre-race rules meeting either.  You may want to.

So, I finally got out this week.  I had 4 straight days of doing nothing, starting with mothers day, then kids sports etc.  So I think I finally know what people mean when they say "getting the junk out of your legs".  Four days rest was nice, but my legs were so tired and heavy this morning on the bike.

Do you think it has anything to do with 4 days of nothing, or the fact it was 44 degrees when I left the house this morning at 5:40 am, and I never really warmed up, or a combo of both?

Combo of both would be my guess.  I love running in cooler weather, but it always takes me a mile or so to get my lets moving.

Just to prove my injury proneness . . . . last night we had out pictures, pizza, etc at swim.  We were also allowed to use the kiddie slide (yeh about 40 adults flying down the slide).

I whacked my elbow on the concrete coming off the slide . . . so yesterday was a bad day for accidents.  Hopefully there is no 3rd times a charm, or things that come in 3's

On a positive note, today was the first morning that I woke up not limping with hip pain . . . PROGRESS!!!

1. USAT rules apply.  Its 7 meters, which is about three bike legnths measured from the front wheel of the leading bike.  The Shamrock course is hilly enough that drafting really shouldn't be a problem.

2. ALWAYS pass on the left.  Passing on the right is a penalty.  Also you cannot cross the yellow line on the road.  When you're coming up to pass someone yell out "on your left" and the person should move over and allow you to pass.  Once you start your pass (that is you enter into forward rider's draft zone you have 15 seconds to pass.

3. Beth will have police officers at the intersection who should hold traffic for you.  I say should.  Its always good to slow down a little going through intersections just to make sure.

4.  Your runner will start with the timing chip on his ankle (on a velcro strap).  When he comes into T1 he'll transfer the chip to you and you go off and ride.  In T2 you'll transferthe chip back to him.
