Veteran 169 Falls Church VA | Subject: RE: THE SLAYER RULES-FULL Up Yeah, its getting to be pretty annoying/frustrating, especially since Ive never really had any knee injuries. Im hoping that I can run tonight feeling about the same as over the weekend. The one side of me says "eff it, just run, youll be fine". Maybe im just getting old (possibly mature?) because theres now another voice that says, "you could mess your knees like youve messed up your arm, is it really worth it?". |

Elite 3495 SE | Subject: RE: THE SLAYER RULES-FULL Up i hate that strggle. for me its every day. hammer or not hammer. im finally being more mature and smart. but not completely... in a similar vein, i have a 26.2 on 3/3 that I am thinking of stepping down to do the half. 13.1. i figured today was my longest run in about 6 weeks and im not really ready for a full marathon as i'd like to hit it. so i may the be smart like Peter earlier suggested. the other side of the coin is there is a sprint tri in my backyard the next day that i would love to do. shanks says i can only do it if i slack up on the half. blech...you just cant have it all and have it now! |

62 | Subject: RE: THE SLAYER RULES-FULL Up Let me know what you guys think or see as wrong/abnormal but my intent now on the bike is to gain volume and start working in some intervals into my rides. This far my bike has been lacking because I had never rode a road bike before I got this one back in Oct or Nov, my longest bike I think somewhere around 35 miles. So going into my Tri I had been focusing on pedal stroke and comfort ability and candance on this foreign machine. Now having a race behind me I think I need to begin increasing the volume of the rides, looking at about 60-70 by middle of march, with this increased volume I need to incorporate some intervals either with hills or intensity. As for the swim I need to go to a class to help me become more efficient as I feel I struggle, especially with my breathing. So that's the plan looking forward towards the next OLY Tri in April. |

If the knee is swelling after 3 miles I would doubt this is just an IT-band issue. If I remember right, you said the MRI of the knee was normal? I would worry about a meniscal tear or foreign body in the joint, especially if you have any popping or locking in the knee. Has it been evaluated by a medical professional. PM if the questions are too personal. Heres the report from the radiologist. Based on this, the orthopedist said I was good to run as much as I could deal with the pain and that I wouldnt be doing any more damage. Id still rather not be running in pain, so Ive given it some time off, but it really doesnt seem to be improving that much. I'm not going to be of any help. That's as frustrating for a surgeon as it is for the patient. If you have something obvious that can be surgically repaired it works out well. With a normal MRI the answer will be physical therapy and rehab. If I remember right you have already tried different shoes. If you haven't watched the video "Evolution in Running" I would give that a try. Shortening your stride length may help. |

Elite 3495 SE | Subject: RE: THE SLAYER RULES-FULL Up x2 on the Evolution DVD. I shortened my stride and upped my cadence alot when I went from single sport running to triathlon; of course the lower intensity too. Hoale, as to the bike, with triathlon you have to integrate your limiter work into your training week and make sure you are giving yourself enough recovery in between tough or longer sessions. Having said that, my first advice would be to ride 1. longer and 2. harder, but not 3. both. Find group rides that are within your range, ride the trainer if the weather is poor, try out the spinnerval dvds that Peter touts, join the trainerroad.com? movement Jordan discussed for 10$ a month ( I hear positive things about it),or just download some workouts like the one on BT from Jorge that loads of folks do. Bottom line is 1. and 2. above. Masters swimming would be great if its geared to triathletes. If not, hit up the specified workouts like on the swim site that Peter mentioned or from a cheap book off amazon. OWS will key asap! Y'all gotta keep hitting it up now. Some of you are dropping workouts due to weather, darkness, etc. Excuses now will hurt when the season hits! Pay the price now and you won't be walking at midpoint of the run thinking why didn't I train harder this winter! My big weeks are starting back. I am shooting for 6-10k yards per week in the pool (3-4 sessions), close to 150 bike miles with at least one 56 miler per week, and 50 run miles per week. Big totals but you won't see me feeling bad due to lack of training in April at the 70.3! |

Extreme Veteran 465 Atlanta, GA | Subject: RE: THE SLAYER RULES-FULL Up Wow, go out of town for a few days and I have a lot of reading to catch up on! I had a convention to go to. I was able to get a couple treadmill runs in and I don't know how many miles I walked around that convention center. I saw phat mention above about finding a good masters program. I am not sure who was talking about it (i'll have to read back through) but I can't begin to tell you how much my masters program has helped me. When I first started swimming there, I good barely make 100m. No chance I made it through the whole workout. Now, I am a pretty solid swimmer. MOP but still moving up. Edit to add: Less than a month to go until Daylight Savings Time!! Race season is right around the corner. Edited by scottyr7 2012-02-15 7:53 AM |

One of these days he will show you his summer home in the backwoods like he showed us last year. The reality is there is no benefit to most oral supplements with a healthy diet and no underlying medical problems. If you read the studies associated with the bubbles they support that concept. The supplements that will give you the best bang for the buck are injections. (Testosterone, Growth Hormone ect.) They avoid the first pass effect of the liver and digestive enzymes. Most of the vitamins are just making expensive pisz. Recent studies show an increased mortality rate in faithful vitamin users over healthy diet people. The supplement industry is a multi-billion dollar business driven by marketing alone with athletes that ho themselves out to products they really have never used. Eat right, train hard= no shortcuts. Extreme Veteran 849 San Diego | Subject: RE: THE SLAYER RULES-FULL Up That's right. Bet against Ash and I'll punish you! In the bad way, not the good way. Agree with Peter that supplements are kinda crap. However, I'm all about good nutrition and I have completely jumped on the coconut water bandwagon. I swear it helps. Been drinking it after workouts and I feel really good. Ran a 5 miler this morning and made it to masters. Swam around 3000. We did 200 tt, 100 tt and 50 tt. My 200 and 50 were the same as last week but I improved my 100 by several seconds. Definitely improving. I have a lesson on Friday, so that should help, too. My bf sucked in the Valentine's Day department this year, so I bought myself a present: a badazz new cycling kit. Speaking of VDay presents, Im going to pat myself on the back for yesterday. Got the wife a new saddle and some overpriced compression tights that she wanted. Topped it off surprising my mom with a Fuel Belt and a new pair of sneakers. Not many people see these as appropriate for Valentines Day. Who needs flowers when you can get new training stuff? |

Elite 3495 SE | Subject: RE: THE SLAYER RULES-FULL Up Lamb chops are worth their weight in gold the night before most races and a red bull shot in the water before a short course tri or in t2 on a mid distance one has mega ROI! The honey buns not so much but I take what I can get after peters european nanny (yes nanny) nicks all my snacks the night before a race. That's why I didn't break 5 hours at the rev3 sc event if you want to know the truth! Ask him about his former Asian nanny that offers special massage. |

Master 2094 | Subject: RE: THE SLAYER RULES-FULL Up Pushing the seat forward will really help with the aerobars. You may have to experiment with saddles to find one that works but I would wait until you are able to ride outside to make that decision. I think everyone's butt suffers in the trainer. |

Elite 3495 SE | Subject: RE: THE SLAYER RULES-FULL Up i find its kind of like a balancing act: more weight on the front means less on the butt and vice versa. i try to get where the two body parts (forearms/trapezoids and taint) hurt equally bad. time for some check ins. haven't heard from some of you and I am not wanting anybody on this mentor thread squeaking by. let me know what work you are doing, what questions you may have, what adjustments you may need to make. over in athens, today its a hope for triple action but at minimum a swim and a run. bigger brick (3 hours - 4 miles) one day this weekend and another good swim and run the other day. next weekend i go to charlotte with tri14kix for the USAT level 1 coaching seminar. more doing it for the knowledge base and to back up my dreamteamtriathlon.com coaches than for $. I dig the stuff anyhow and Mrs Slayer gave me the hall pass. |

Extreme Veteran 465 Atlanta, GA | Subject: RE: THE SLAYER RULES-FULL Up I've got a long weekend ahead. I swam this morning with masters and our coach must have not been in a good mood or something. She brought some pain. I have a masters swim tomorrow followed by an 1:45 run. Sunday is a 4:30 Z2 on the bike with a quick transition run (I think). Other good news, I dropped down below 190 on the scale this morning for the first time since the holidays. Making progress on that front. I really would like to be in the 170's for Eagleman. Next weekend I am running the Charles Harris 10K. I want to go sub 48:00 to get into the A group for the Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta on July 4th. That would be a :30 PR for be but from what I have heard about the course, it's fast. Phat, what mixture do you use in your bottles with the carbo pro and EFS? I am currently using Infinit and want to experiment with some other things. I love Infinit but the cost and having to order every time I need some starts to get old. |
