Bought a family pass to the town pool yesterday. Before that, I swam 500x2 and did a nice two mile run. Along with a few other people, there was another triathlete (70.3 IM swim cap gave him away) in the pool. It is so hard to converse with people while swimming, but I wanted to say hi and try to get a training partner. There was so much chop in the pool it almost felt like open water. Got a little panicky when I couldn't get good breathes because of it. This is at least the second time I've wanted to talk to someone while swimming. Didn't see him after the set either. Another reason why swimming is so different than bike and run.

When I went back to the pool with the rest of my family, there was a kid there who was doing what I would describe as 'flip laps' which is doing under water somersault flips down the lane. I think he did 8 flip laps (200 yds) before moving on to another set of drills. It actually looked very difficult. Maybe going to try them soon. Was also trying to teach my kids to swim. So much fun on Father's Day.

Oak,

Sorry to hear about your ankle/foot. Funny how we will do anything to impress our sweetey. Take it easy and mend that ankle. I swear that this group is plagued by foot ankle issues.

Confession time ... I caved on the no ice cream this weekend. Just couldn't walk down to the sand stand with the family and not get a hot fudge sunday.  That would be sacrilegious, but I am now back on track.  Not bad considering I would normally eat ice cream just about every day.

No big deal. You made it a fairly long time. Occasionally is WAY better than everyday. I think the challenge was proposed primarily because all of that refined sugar is bad for people, and secondly, to test will power and control over foods and habits. I have some harmless habits I'd like to change, and this is just a test of mental strength. On July 1, I am going to eat ice cream until I can visibly see my stomach expanding.

12 mile bike with a 1 mile run last night. Finished at about 9:55 PM, right before they closed the gate to the track. I was going to go for another mile but thought I should quit while feeling good. The problem with night workouts is that I get home already past my bedtime, and I'm so pumped with endorphins that I can't go to sleep for another hour or two. Needless to say, today I am FKN TIRED!!

Working at a yoga and music festival this weekend. Ziggy Marley and Ani DeFranco are headlining. I did the same last year and it was very cool. The people were sooo nice, and very health and fitness conscious. I think I'm going to work double shifts all weekend, but I'm going to camp next to a nice pond, so maybe able to get a few good swims before clocking in. I should have saved my "fkn tired" comment until Monday morning.

EDIT to add linky: Wanderlust Vermont - Wanderlust Festival

Hi All,

Nice to see people racing and getting in the training! Sorry to see yet another ankle injury.  This group and ankles! Hope everyone's injury heals quickly.  I am progressing SLOWLY.  I have had several runs in the Alter G at 60% bodyweight and so far so good.  Been riding the granny bike but hoping to get clearance very soon from the PT to clip in and ride my road bike.  It's getting lonely and jealous of the time I'm spending with granny.

Skibummer, a yoga and music festival.  Sounds ultra cool!

I have been getting in training despite being quite busy and having to deal with a very sad and tragic event.  Actually, getting on my bike or in the pool has been cathartic.   One of my students, an adorable 4 year old boy, drowned in the local pool last week.  I attended his funeral yesterday. Funerals are no fun at any time, but when it's a child, it goes to a whole new level of sad. I had a terrible headache afterwards and didn't sleep well last night, but I managed to get myself to the pool today.  I'd better since on Sunday, I will be the swim leg of an Oly relay team.  Should be interesting as I have yet to do an OWS this season. I am going to dedicate my swim to my little student. I know he will be cheering me on.  The kids love to see pictures of me racing and this little guy would always ask me "You win?"  Sigh....

Wow, Suzimmer.... what a tragedy.  I remember a few years ago a little 6 year old boy drowned in a hotel pool here in Bali.  His family were members of our church.  It was awful.  I really feel for you and the family at the moment.  such a tough time for everyone concerned.

Had a pretty rough day at work yesterday, and had deliberately waited till after work to do my run.  Boy, was that the best decision.  Had a great run!  Nice steady, consistent and even pace.  Fantastic 4km...  Ready for my race on Sunday....

Im so sorry...that is so sad.  It tears me up when things happen to children.  That is as great thing your doing dedicating your swim in his memory.  Good luck in your swim

A very bad thing just happened in my town Tuesday.  Here in Michigan City, Indiana, at Strieble Pond, a woman was attacked while jogging.  In the day light.  This is where me and my jogging partner go to jog.  We jog on Tuesdays...and because of my ankle injury, she jogged alone that day!  That could of been her.  What the heck is wrong with people?  I dont understand the mind set of some of these people.  The police say that the two men were in there mid 20s.  The woman was jogging alone, and wearing head phones, and the men tried to talk to her but she did not hear them.  After a few laps around the pond, one of the men tried to pull her into the woods, while the other came up from behind her.  Thankfully she was able to get away.

So regardless of my ankle, looks like I cant let her jog alone tomorrow.  Its a shame we live in a world when you cant feel safe at a public park.  And we live in a small little town...I know this kind of stuff happens all the time in larger cities, but when it starts to reach out to small towns you know its a problem.

So to everyone out there, please be safe...I know some of you run early in the morning and at night.  Keep an eye on your surroundings and try to let people know your running route.

I'm from a very small town in Iowa. This happens all the time, everywhere. I actually feel safer in big cities because I'm rarely alone. Good for you to stick with your partner! Also, you can always ride alongside on your bike as well.

Doing the right thing by dedicating your race Sue Z. No matter where it happens, news like that really gets to me. Hope you are doing well.

Took my family to the pool last night. There are four lifeguards watching the water and I STILL keep my eyes on mine and the other kids. While my kids ate snack with Mom, I swam in the lap lane. There are always kids who jump into that lane to play, so I decided it would be good race practice to swim through them. Did good going through one swarm, then the next I got a little girl in the neck with my hand. Had to stop to see if she was OK (she was fine and apologized to me even after I apologized to her a few times.)

Got my wife to breathe out underwater for a slow three count. Next session we will work with a board and breathing out to the side while kicking down the lane. My hope is to get her to do some kind of tri feat, even if it is a pool float, bike tour around town, and a easy stroll down on the sidewalk. Not a race, just a multi sport activity to share with her. She thinks I'm going to blast off and leave her standing there, but trying to reassure her that it is something I want to do together.

No words of wisdom (since I haven't BTDT till July 22!) but have a wonderful, fun race! No matter what happens, you're headed for a PR on Sunday!

Page 23 - Steph lays it all out for you.

Total newbie myself, but I would suggest reviewing the course layout in person if you have the opportunity at packet pickup, etc.  Especially if they've started setting up transition areas, ins & outs. Knowing the layout really helped to ease my nerves.  If it's possible to drive the bike & run courses too, it can help to know in advance any hills, areas of rough pavement and where the aid stations will be. I also think this is a good idea from a safety perspective - in both of my races there were near crashes because competitors didn't understand the multi-loop bike course.

Enjoy the race!

Good luck to all who are scheduled to race this weekend. Positivity, strength, determination. You CAN do it. I'm envious of all who get to toe the starting line. Click off a mile for me....BECAUSE....

I'm off to work for the first of three 20 hour work days. The good news is that the thunderstorms are supposed to develop and pass before I have to set my tent up well after midnight. I'm going to try hard to get a run and swim in on Sat/Sun, but honestly I'm going to be wiped out and it could be dangerous to attempt the swim and the legs might flat out refuse to get going. Maybe just a nice wade out to wake up in the mornings with a slow paced 2 miler after.

GO HEAT!!!!!!!!!!

What an arse whooping THAT was! and of course it was loud loud loud until all hours of the morning here! I did not make it to the 6am swim. Oh well!

It reminded me fondly of the 7 years I spent in Chicago in the 90's, watching Michael Jordan. Lebron James is no MJ, but this sure has been fun!

Terri the awk1987, thanks for remembering!

I posted several bits of advice from different trainers/coaches on the 23rd page of our discussions here. I can't wait to hear how everyone does!

There are funny funny stories in back issues of triathlete magazine by professional and elite triathletes, of things they messed up on the first Tri. From things they forgot to things they got just sort of wrong. They laugh about them now and you will too if you end up on your bike with your swim goggles on for example.

Take time in transition...

I think the bike holds the most potential disasters for everyone. Running in bike shoes is not easy... but neither is slipping your feet into shoes that are already attached to pedals.

1. BUCKLE YOUR STRAP. The helmet police WILL take you aside and you will be in the way of others trying to get past you. SO, HEAD TO TOE... remove swim cap and goggles.... put on helmet BUCKLE, put on glasses, deal with shoes... and GO!

2. Ride on the right unless you are passing. Pass with authority and then GET OVER TO THE RIGHT.
3. When someone passes you, let them in in front of you. It's illegal to speed up to keep them out.

4. Slow down into transition and get your feet out of your shoes, pedals early. Getting off the bike is tough. Practice!!

Everything else is pretty easy.

ENJOY IT!

Digest

Suzi,
I am sorry to hear about the loss of your student. There is no tragedgy greater than the loss of child.
Good luck on the race and he'll know you will be racing with him in your heart.

Oak,
Its is scary world we live in. You never know when someone will have malicious intent and sadly you always need to be aware.
It is very noble of you to go out with your running partner to protect her.

Skibummer,

That is awesome that you are teaching your wife how to swim and doing this sport with her.
I heard a saying on here, "those that tri together, stay together". It sounds like you got an awesome weekend planned. Have a blast.

Erin,

I dont think I can add much, other than to say "go get em tiger". You have been planning and preparing for this, so you will surely rock it.
Try to take the time to soak it in.

Steph,

All i heard was .. blah blah .. blah .. up late .. blah ... MJ rules .. blah blah.
Tongue out
I dont actually follow basketball, but I did see the news this morning that the Heat won. Which is awesome for Lebron.

--
I picked up some new kicks yesterday. Got me some Miznuno Inspires. I ran in them this morning and my foot didn't bother me as much,
but the real test will be out on the road on Sunday. Hopefully, replacing the shoes will do the trick, if not a trip the doctors might be in order.
Or I could stop running for a few days.. but what fun would that be?

--Have a great weekend.
