Veteran 976 New Hampshire | Subject: RE: Leegoocrap & Newbz rowdy Mentor Group - Closed After reading that zone 2 thread and seeing where I'm at, I did a realllllly slow Z2 run last night and it actually felt really good. I think I'm going to just throw some more easy Z2 runs in there for the time being. I'm going to be (more) time crunched over the next month or so and it's a lot easier to sneak a run in early or late. |

Veteran 976 New Hampshire | Subject: RE: Leegoocrap & Newbz rowdy Mentor Group - Closed Another easy run last night, from a bunch of different tables and whatever I should be around a 9:30 pace for my easy runs which puts me around 140 BPM which is right at my upper Z2/lower Z3 levels. I've been going about everything too mindlessly, I have my schedule of days laid out but I need to have some sort of plan in terms of workouts and intensities. |

Expert 2192 Greenville, SC | Subject: RE: Leegoocrap & Newbz rowdy Mentor Group - Closed had my first OWS of the year yesterday. 1900 yards out and back. the water was ~63 degrees but it really didn't feel that cold once i started moving. a lot of people were visibly shivering and several mentioned they would be skipping the first half of the season due to the really cold temps we have been having. last year at this time it was too hot in the water to even wear a wet suit, and right now its a requirement. yesterday i also felt the onset of tendinitis in my left foot, same spot that put me out of training for a month last november. i think i caught it early enough and rolled out the knot in my lower leg which was causing it.... hoping i did anyway. i can't afford to miss any training before my HIM or my race completely. |

Once I've got my wetsuit on, it's got to be pretty cold in the water for me to be cold after a minute or two warming up. |

Member 275 Cleveland OH | Subject: RE: Leegoocrap & Newbz rowdy Mentor Group - Closed Had a great Swim Friday morning. Worked outdoors all day saturday, Lawn,Garden,Split firewood Etc... Rode 35 miles today, Felt pretty good. 1:56:00 pretty good time I think, 1200 ft elevation gain,
Gonna try to swim in the morning, Have not been running this week think I was starting to get shin splints from running too hard too quick. After reading your guys Z2 runs I think I will take a few runs a week slower vrse full bore which is usually what I do. |

Veteran 976 New Hampshire | Subject: RE: Leegoocrap & Newbz rowdy Mentor Group - Closed Question for yas. So I'm loving the easy runs thus far. I'm still having a hard time "slowing" myself down that much to get a good Z2 heart rate, I'm more around a high Z2 dipping into 3 on a big hill or something, but all in all I'm in 2 and feeling great. Assuming right now I'm just building a base for the most part, adding miles as I can, that sort of thing, should I apply the same idea towards the bike? I usually just go out and ride the distance or time I have in mind and I probably push myself most of the time into Z3 and Z4 with some sprints and larger hills. I don't feel trashed after my workouts unless I really go after it on the hills, however I don't usually have the time in my schedule to do back to back days of riding to know how much I'm really wearing myself down. Thanks for the advice. |

Thanks for the advice. In running, you can add "base" miles and get pretty good benefits out of it while reducing the risks of injury. In Cycling/Swimming the chance of injury going "hard" is a lot less, and when you cut the harder stuff on the run the added stress from hard cycling doesn't really effect you (me anyways) too bad either. I think you'll have a lot more success doing hard sessions on the bike most of the time. |

Once I've got my wetsuit on, it's got to be pretty cold in the water for me to be cold after a minute or two warming up. thanks, problem averted in one foot, started creeping up in the opposite over the weekend. tightness finally knotted up and i think i got it rolled out. first race of the season this saturday (Clemson Sprint). would really like to take the podium, but i'm not tapering. still feel like i got a shot though i've taken 1st in my AG every sprint since my first race as a novice (which was clemson a year ago), so im going to have that driving me for the hour. |

Thanks for the advice. riding is very low impact and doesn't stress your body out as much as running. i would use the longer bike workouts for nutrition dialing at first then push as hard as you can for the full distance. to build volume initially on the bike i would add another workout over adding volume to an existing one though. |

Veteran 976 New Hampshire | Subject: RE: Leegoocrap & Newbz rowdy Mentor Group - Closed Awesome job, Sharon! Doesn't look like you've logged on for a few months, but if you see this congrats! Thanks for the replies on the bike workouts. With the whole house thing and the kid thing I have to cancel yet another tri I had planned, so my first tri won't even be until June 23rd haha. That's sad. I may try to sneak in a few 5ks or something just to get the racing juices flowing. I'm going to keep training as per usual but I would like to get in some kind of race soon just for the competitive aspect of it. Kyle, I saw your post on cutting back on the lifting, obviously your training is going great, do you think it's that you've taken that time previously spent lifting to focus towards SBR or something else? Good luck on your race on Saturday, make sure to do a race report, those are always great to read. |

Champion 7136 Knoxville area | Subject: RE: Leegoocrap & Newbz rowdy Mentor Group - Closed So I'm definitely weighing the option of doing IM Lou next year (2014)
2010 was the last 140.6 (and only) and I finished in 12:19:xx... The caveat is that if I go next year, I want to KQ. That means a 9:3x:xx time! Basically finishing in the top 30 or so OVERALL. Although a couple of guys whose opinion I trust think that it's possible (considering I stay injury free for basically the next year while adding some pretty heavy volume to my training) it is certainly a tall mountain to climb.
The other option is to wait until 2015, when I'll have a better base to work off of. The downside of course being another year later :P Still not decided on my course of action, but I've got to make a choice pretty soon. Hmmm |

Veteran 976 New Hampshire | Subject: RE: Leegoocrap & Newbz rowdy Mentor Group - Closed Go for it. You seem like you have a really good handle on what you're doing and what to expect from yourself. You're young and have the time. Some day maybe you get married, have a kid, whatever, all of a sudden priorities change and you might not have the time to train like you want to. If making Kona is THE thing you want to do, go for it now. Life changes so fast, if you have the oppurtunity to do it now, do it. |

Whatever flips your channels for ya. Do you see yourself regretting it more if you go for it and finish 31st or if you put it off a year and happen to meet someone and go do the whole union/mountain idea we explored above and maybe not have a chance to do it for another 5 years? |

The good thing about IMLou is it's slooowww to sell out, so I can durdle around before signing up fairly long into next year if something goes wrong or I re-evaluate and think it's not going to happen. :P Now to get to work |

Member 275 Cleveland OH | Subject: RE: Leegoocrap & Newbz rowdy Mentor Group - Closed Wow Chris, That is a awesome goal!! Like John said above do it now unless you plan on going pro or have an in to get a lottery spot for Kona. Now I am assuming that if you qualify at Lou August 25thish and Kona is Oct 10thish that means you qualify for the 2015 year or are you going to have to do Kona 2 months after Louisville? I have been listening to Macca's podcast, Rich Roll and Ben Greenfield, Just today Macca said the biggest difference between Age Groupers and Pros is the amount of sleep they get. Us age groupers work full time jobs and have a family, garden to tend, kids running around whatever else going on.
So I if this is what you really want then you are going to have to Work Sleep then Train. Ben Greenfield has a pretty sweet minimalist training regimen he does and he just got 5th in the Vietnam Tri overall and he is not pro but beat plenty of Pros by this program. I hope you make it bro, if you decide this is what you want. I hiked the Appalachian Trail when I was 23 because I knew I wouldn't have another chance to do it. So I say go for it. Todd |
