Got to get in a run after my husband gets up from his Father's Day sleep in. Then I'm on a plane for work which means I'll either kill all my workouts or more likely get to almost nine of them.

Any tips for motivating when on the road?

Wow with that swim you must be training for an IronMan

Weekly goals:
Start OLY plan and do each workout s/b/r 2x (Only swam 1x, lake is too far away to chance it if we go into labor)
Limit poor food and beverage choices after 6PM. worked well 5-7 days. improvement
Lose 3 pounds. (only lost 1.2 pounds, down to 206.8, had an epic bender last night though, or I may have lost another pound or so.)

With that in mind, weekly goals:
up the b/r to 3x since I cannot get to lake due to possibility of labor.
limit poor food and beverage choices after 6PM
Lose 4.8 lbs. normal 3 pounds plus 1.8 pound penalty. If I don't lose, no booze for the following week. Now there's something to work for!

Thanks Kevin, I am fine, just startled me more than anything, and more importantly, the bike is ok

Greetings all - I've been MIA for the better part of the last 10 days and I apologize for that... My back was hurting me something fierce. I know I fell off my bike 2 weeks ago - but the pain has continued to get worse over that period of time. It got to the point where it hurt to even walk because the act of walking caused my core to contract which pulled on my muscles. Sleeping was tough and the doc wasn't willing to give me a lot of pain meds because he said I could be on the DL for 4-6 weeks which might lead to addiction (the oxy he did give worked so well I can see why he was cautious

So, I missed a 5k yesterday (I walked it instead) and I'm probably going to have to pass on doing the olympic distance at my race at the end of the month and will try to do a sprint instead. But even that is in doubt. It still hurts to swim and run and I've got to think that it would also hurt to bend over to reach the handle bars on my bike.

And that is where the pity party needs to stop.... There is no question that S/B/R is hard but I need to find something to do or else I'm gonna continue to slide backwards. So tomorrow I'm going to try to do some yoga in the morning and go for a walk in the afternoon with the hope that some kind of activity will help me stay out of the cookie jar. I'll also continue to ice it 3x and take the ibuprofen. If anyone else has any ideas - I'd be more than willing to hear them...

I'm gonna post the weekly goal sheet. Let's be sure to support one another!

Hang in there David and heal up. Try taking 2 naproxen in the AM and 2 more in the PM instead of the ibuprofen. It has the same effect but my ortho said the half life is much longer. You would have to take a ibuprofen every 2 hours for it to stay in the body and that many will lead to trouble. So far I have been doing that and it seems to be working well. No swelling or pain.
Yoga for the win! You do real well while doing it both mentally and physically. Can you do an ellipictal or does that flare it up also? That's what they had me on when I couldn't run. Rest up and feel better!

Wishing you the best Dave! I know you must be very frustrated by now. Unfortunately it sounds like time may not be on your side. How many more days until your race? Ice and ibuprofen is probably your best course of actoin. How about electrical stim? I've used it a good bit over the years for my shoulder. Can get that muscle firing and increase the blood flow thorugh it. Maybe your doc or a PT can advise you on this. Good luck and keep us up to date on your progress!

Good thing your okay. How big of a dog? We've got a few ankle biters in our neighborhood and I actually kicked one out running one day with an extra high heel lift. Popped it right in the jaw while the owners just watched! No effort on their part to call their dog off. However, getting rolled over by a bike is a different story. Too bad the owners weren't concerned. I've often said if a person can't raise a dog they certainly dont need children! Keep safe out there. Good luck with your training!

That sounds awful! I'd agree to give Alieve a try. I find it works a lot better and lover than ibuprofen. (might be worth a call to your doc to get his take though.).

Do you have a cruiser bike with more upright handlebars that you could try riding to give your back a break? Or put it on a trainer and just ride sitting up?

Be careful with the yoga.

I hope you can find a routine that works for you.

It was a middle sized dog probably 25-30lbs not huge, but not an ankle biter either. I agree with you on the part about if the can't raise dogs not needing children. Sadly, there are lots of irresponsible people out there. Never kicked a dog, thought about it a few times, but usually the ones that try to chase me while running I just have to turn and charge and they run the other way.

That really sucks. I had a bad car accident a long while back and had some major sciatic nerve problems for a few months. What ended up helping me a lot was something called the "Alexander Method" which was a way to readjust my posture and walking. May not help you, and honestly, it may have just been coincidence for me.

Dave, sorry you're hurting. You've got a decent plan though I think, just move, don't tax it. I'll second the Aleve as well. I take that any time I need anti-inflam, and it works wonders for me. Rest up.

The bike and run were hilly and had a lot of elevation changes. However, it didn't feel as bad as my first race two weeks ago due to the weather being really nice (low to mid 70's and not super sunny).

I think I am going to take a little time off before my next race (still TBD).

I think today's well earned beers will be:

Maine Beer Company - Lunch

Dogfish Head - Brew

Happy Father's Day everybody.

Congratulations on beating your target!

George - Way to go... I live pretty close to Ashland and I hear it's a pretty good race although I've heard the run from the swim to T1 is pretty long and rough! How was the lunch and the beer - I've got to imagine it was pretty good.

If you are looking for a race - check out the Max series - it's the most organized series around her in my opinion.

Did some good stuff over the weekend, long bike ride on saturday, and my backend is still sore. Then did a run last night, ended up at 4.25 miles. I was a bit bummed because I thought I was being a completely lazy fat bastard on the run... then when I mapped it on map my run it said it was 2180' of gain or so.

I've never done that hilly of a run, so I might just keep going with that route as a medium length. I'm still trying to find where my running lengths are. When I ran my previous 5ks, I would run 3 miles and call it kosher. Now I'm thinking 4 for a medium run and 6 for a long run, to factor for how tired I may be when I get to the run. Opinions? As for running base/ normal mileage... I have none. I'm still trying to find out what distances are good for now, and where I can push to. I'm also contemplating a half marathon later this year, so I would have to dial this in asap I think.

All in all, a good weekend, and starting working with a swim coach this afternoon to get down stroke.

I am now officially a Triathlete!
I completed my first triathlon on Sunday. It was a "short" sprint: 1/4 mile swim, 9 mile bike, 2 mile run. It was by far the most physically demanding thing I have ever done and I really enjoyed it. I managed to complete it in 1:06:25, far better than what I though I would do. You can see my race report here.
http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp...
Would like to thank everyone in the group for their support. Just coming here are reading everyone's comments and posting a few of mine has really helped me out.
Now to find the next race, a more traditional length sprint would be good.

Congratulations!!!

Having just finished my second race this past weekend, I know what a thrill that first race is.

As good as the first one is, the second one will be even better!

Keep up the great work and enjoy that Fat Tire.  Cool
