Jeff, post the river crossing picture from facebook. That is crazy.

I just installed a power meter on my bike and took it out to be sure it works. Seems like its good to go. I'm taking it out tomorrow morning for a FTP test. I am a wee bit excited.

Power meter?  Your wife is way to good to you!  Now I need to begin discussions with Lis about a power meter for me.  I can't be one upped you know.

__________

I'm having a decent training week so far but the swim hasn't begun for the week yet.  That starts tonight and has another scheduled for the long course pool in the morning tomorrow.  My bike is already at 80 miles for the week and I should get 70-ish miles in for a ride on Saturday.  My run is at 16 miles with my long run scheduled for 14-15 tomorrow too.  If I have the leg strength on Saturday I may run a couple of mile brick to round out my running and training for the week.

Warren congrats on the getting the power meter, it's obviously an awesome tool to have in both the training and racing arsenal. I'll have to wait until next year to get one but I've already started lobbying for new racing wheels and a power meter.

Calibration is trivial with the Stage power meters Jonathan. Spin it around, put the crank straight down, hit calibrate on the 910, and a few seconds later you're good to go. Gotta do it before every ride. I guess it goes faster if any other ANT+ devices are already synced, so I waited until after the HR monitor was working.

Dirk, the stages version is actually quite reasonable (as far as power meters go), and I got an unexpected bonus so I got the go ahead to spend some of it on bike toys. Wait until I tell you about the other toy I got!

Thanks, Tony, I hope it does give me better training feedback.

Subject: My weekend race
This weekend (my 4th in a row) is another road tri.

This is a fun sprint tri that was the ONE tri I did each year for a number of years while I was still just a gym rat.
It's got a unique format: 400swim/1mile run/20k bike/2 mile run. This is because they can't logistically put a bike transition near the water.

I am considering trying something interesting at T1 (there are 3). I think I will run out of the water and keep going. I will either toss my cap/goggles to a friend or just carry them up to T2 during my barefoot run. How is 18 seconds for a transition!?!?!

Last year I was 3rd OA at this race. I lost 2nd place by 20 seconds to a guy I didn't know. Turns out he's a mtn biker turned also into a triathlete. I have raced with him at Xterras since then but can't compare to him on the mtn bike (yet). 3 weeks ago at my last road tri, he beat me by 3 seconds. I have offered him a wager of $1 on the outcome between us.

I also have offered that wager to 3 others! 2 have already accepted. These are all people that have beaten me recently. In fact, now that I think about it I've never beaten 3 of the 4. The 4th is a girl...who chicked me at that road tri a few weeks ago. Last year at this weekend's race she was new to triathlon and swam very slowly and I don't remember how she biked, then she turned in the fastest run split in the entire race. She's a low 17 minute 5ker. She spent all year swimming and cycling and now is scary fast.

The deal with the $1 bets is that we all have to tape them somewhere on our bikes before the race. Then after the race they get handed over. I will probably just be giving away all my $1 bills, but it will make it fun. And people will wonder why all these $1 bills are taped to bikes! I'm going to tape all of mine to the disc wheel.

That's a great idea. What's the surface of the first run? I'd check about tossing your stuff to someone - it might be considered outside help if they're anal about rules. Love the dollar bets too, but don't plan on giving them all away.

I'm debating something during my aqua-bike that's not quite so radical but seems obvious. It is a super long run from the ocean to T1, like a half mile. I'm going to take the wetsuit off om the beach as soon as I get out of the water and run to T1 without the encumbrance.

Warren, thanks for that thought. I will not risk the penalty. It's easy enough to carry my goggles up.
The surface is smooth asphalt. From memory of past races there, there aren't many pebbles anywhere. The most likely place for that would be the church parking lot we run through. Otherwise it's all well traveled secondary road without any gravel spillover anywhere.
It's also mostly uphill as we climb from the lake to T2...or I should say about 1/2 uphill and 1/2 level.

I've got 4 takers of my $1 bet so far!

Ran another 5k tonight and even with my tired legs and what seems to be 0 running I came in just shy of a PR at 21:20. Used a bit of a different strategy for this race,, normally I go red-line for the entire time and try to hold on, this time I let every one sprint away from me at the beginning and held a slower pace. It was super hard to watch everyone run away from me at the beginning but I held my ground and instead of running a crazy fast mile, I split at 6:45. Then as the race went on, eveyrone that sprinted up in front fell apart and I passed them one by one! After the 1st mile, I just tried to hold average pace and it actually worked out really well. Instead of feeling trashed at the end I finished strong. Here are the splits, I added in the tenth to show how close I paced!

Mile 1: 6:44

Mile 2: 7:05:23

Mile 3: 7:05:93

Finished with an avg of 6:58 so slower than what I wanted but I think I learned a little. Finished 28 OA and 3rd in AG! Race season is now on pause for a minute as I enter vacation season! (I wonder if I can find a race on vacation)

Matt, congrats on the race!!! You are getting really fast!

Jeff, I hope you make lots of $$$$ at your race... Hey that will make you a "pro" right??? Hey, if you are making $$$, that is a "pro".... good luck!

Jo and Tony, good luck in your race and be careful on the trip to and from. Looking forward to getting your race reports!

Well yesterday was really the 1st time I've swam in 3 weeks due to family and work. They had the pool set up for 50 yards instead of 25. That 1 second break at the wall on the 25 is very helpful...I SUCKED at the 50 yard distance. I don't know why the 1st 200- 300 yards are so hard on me!!! I told my wife that my running is getting lots better, biking is getting better now that it is warm but swim is killing me and i can't figure it out. The pools are always full and it is difficult to find a place to swim. I'm not doing tri's because of the swim. I thought by now I would at least be comfortable swimming, not fast but at least do the distance. How long did it take ya'll to learn? Just venting and kicking my own butt!

Jeff,  I think the wagers are a great motivational tool for everyone involved.  And as tight as I am those $4 might come in handy for some ice cream after the race.

Running the race in bare feet seems like an interesting way to pick up a few seconds too.  My feet would never take it, especially since I am still dealing with my PF.  There's no question that I would run slower in bare feet so my time would be slower and I would have lost the advantage of not stopping in T1.

Matt,  It looks like you had a great race.  It sounds like you're getting closer to getting to that PR again.  The running fitness you've developed is allowing you fewer running miles to maintain your fitness, but it's likely not allowing anymore gains.  Your first mile split is really cooking.  What do you think you're chances of even splitting at 6:50 are? If you could hold that pace it would bring you in at 21:15.  Even pacing should allow you to have an even but hard effort all the way through the course.

Karl,  Maybe you should take a look at a resistance belt for swimming out of town.  Here's one at Swim Outlet that's fairly affordable.  This could be used at your pool at home or a pool at a hotel when you're out of town.  As much as it seems your gone from home it may be just the tool you need.  The only thing you would have to do is adapt to using time rather distance.  All of your intervals would to be based on time and you wouldn't be able to figure any distances at all.  However, it could be just the thing you need to give yourself confidence.  Consider doing a TT in a measured pool and then spending at least a month using the cord doing timed intervals of 1-2 minutes longer than your measured time trial, then go back to the pool and TT again.

For instance:  You do a 500TT in the pool and swim a 10 minute overal time.  Now go home or to the hotel pools and swim 2-3 12 minute intervals a couple of times a week (3x would be better) for 4 weeks and then go back to the pool and TT again.  My wager is that you will see a nice speed increase.

I'm getting ready to head to the pool again this morning to get my first long course pool work out in.  I've never done the 50 yard pool but I am anxious to give it a shot.  I swam last night and hit some difficult sets and today I am planning a bit of a 1500yd TT to see what the outcome is.  I don't have a lot of expectations since I swam less than 24 hours ago but I'm anxious to see the effects of long course.

Following the swim I am going out for my long run.  The plan is 14 miles and I'll see how that goes.  After last weeks layoff I ran 8 miles on Monday and my foot (PF) was remarkable painful in the following hours.  I didn't take any meds for it but if I experience that kind of pain again I will most certainly do so this time.  The meds would allow the inflammation to get out of it and things will work much, much better with one shot of Nsaids.

Dirk, good luck on your swim today and i really hope your PF gets better.

Thanks for the inof about the swim outlet bungy cord for use as a stationary swimmer. I've heard that you do not get the "wake" and get the air pocket to breath in since you are not moving. thoughts?

Matt congrats on another smokin fast 5K. I think you are getting dialed in on your pacing now you are going to get that PR soon enough.

Dirk enjoy the swim and the run today. I've not had the opportunity to swim in a 50 yd/m pool but I'd like to do that some time.

Jeff good luck this weekend and I'd have to agree with Karl racing for money sounds like you've turned Pro on us lol!

Karl I think what Dirk is suggesting is a good idea. The other thing that might help a bit is using the pull bouy in some sets, that will give you better balance so you're not sinking and you can work on your stroke. I know your biggest problem sounds like being able to get time in the pool due to the crowds.

First race of the season finally! All this training I've been doing better pay off this weekend or I'm gonna be seriously upset lol. If you guys are very bored this weekend JoAnne and I are trackable via the Ironman website but as you know it is soooo slow to update. JoAnne's BIB# is 198 and I am 867. Looking forward to meeting and racing with JoAnne this weekend. You better believe the Junkies are well represented this weekend in Syracuse. I can't wait to get up there and have some fun this weekend. I am really looking forward to doing this race.

I am going to get an easy hour swim in the morning, run all my errands and get packed up today. I also need to pick up my rent a car. My van is in the shop so that was not an option for this weekend. Good luck to all the Junkies racing this weekend.

Matt, that's pretty much an awesome time for a 5k as far as I'm concerned. I would love to run that fast! Part of me wants to do a 5k, but every time I go out and run a fast mile or two, my lower legs are beat up for a couple weeks. I had been running pretty consistently and a little while ago ran two miles hard and my left calf and shins have been sore ever since. I'm thinking about looking at different shoes or something.

Tony, thanks for the head's up on the tour de france challenge. I would love to jump in, but I'm leaving for Mt. Rainier in the middle of it. :-(

Ok Tony and JoAnne!! Have a great time this weekend!

Dirk, whenever I take days off from running my Achilles hurt me more than normal. When you have a chronic issue it seems to be somewhat normal for the continued activity to keep the pain more manageable than if the activity is sporadic. Sorry about your pain. I'm just very glad you made it to and through Boston on it!

Matt, great job on wise pacing your 5k. Your first mile was faster of course but with the difficulty of nailing a pace when you have no feedback from perceived exertion (thinking right at the start), it's darn good. But I have the same question as Dirk, what if you got that first mile yet slower? In fact, I did find in the old days that I was slightly faster if I negative splitted a little bit.

I dare you to start your next 5k with an actual 7:00 mile!

Yes, barefoot running while dealing with PF would be horrible! I believe I can run at least as fast while barefoot on this surface. I have some practice training barefoot and it's not the whole race...it's about 9/10 mile.
I will report back afterwards and comment on how it went for me (unless I change my mind before the race).

Great 5K Matt, I use the start strong and fade stradegy and get passed by everyone and their dog in the last few k's, so maybe I might try what you did and see if I cant pass at least one person.

I managed to get in a few good rides the last few nights, Bricked at 55k (32mi) ride with a 5k tempo run that felt pretty good. Also the waether has been that nice I was able to get in a 18k (11mi) run this morning before work. Work has gotten in the way of my swim workouts this week, but I was lucky enough to finish up early this morning and got in 2500m at lunch. Planning on my first Century Ride for Sunday (since its Canada it will be a metric century , I plan on doing a full 100mi later this summer)

Hope everyone raceing this weekend has a great time and represents. Cheers all.

Tony/Joanne have a great race this weekend! We will be rooting for you!

Jeff, you taping dollar bills to your bike reminds me of the motorcycle commercial with the guy made Of money! Just flapping money everywhere!

for the 5k pacing, I actually went 20s slower on the 1st Mile for this race than the last 2! I had been running around 6:20 and then losing 15-20s per mile after that. 7:00 for the 1st mile? That could be hard to do as I watch even more people pass me at the beginning! Maybe if I started a little further back instead of on the front line. I need to figure something out though because a buddy just turned in a 20:42, 1st time he beat me this year! Dang dedicated runners

Jeff,  The PF was definitely worse last when when I quit running altogether!!  I was almost completely hobbled by it after the first week or so when I began to take some time off for healing and recovery.  It was HORRIBLE!!!  My overall condition has become better in general though.  Since dropping a significant volume following Boston things seem to be slowly progressing to normal for me.  I am trying to adapt to slower, shorter stride and I am keeping all of my paces slow.  I am also considering getting a Garmin foot pod to try to get my cadence to "better" my turnover.  I checked my cadence on a recent run and found it to be about 160-ish.

Darek, it sounds like you are getting in some decent workouts this week.  An 11 mile run seems great.  I have to swim at somewhat odd periods and sometimes consecutive days to get 2 swims a week.  Sometimes it works out that I can only get one swim a week in because of the pools' schedule not mine.

Finally Joanne and Tony, There had better be some pictures of the both of you this weekend or you're going to be out of the Junkies!!  You guys are going to do great this weekend.  I don't think anyone is worried about the Junkies being represented well.  That goes without saying. We'll all be following you come Sunday morning.

I did my first long course pool swim today and had mixed results.  My TT went fairly decent but it was definitely effected by the fatigue from last nights swim and one end of the pool.  During my WU I could feel some fatigue in my rear delts, traps and lats so I knew it was going to be somewhat difficult to keep a solid pace.

Then there was the wall in the diving well.  I knew it would be more difficult to know where/when to begiun the turn because I am used to seeing the cross on the bottom of the pool at a certain place in 4 feet of water.  Now the cross was much deeper at 13 feet and there were 2 of them to look at.  One of the crosses was farther, at the end of the pool, while the other was at the "wall" of the bulkhead that normally splits the pool into 2 separate pools and making all of the lanes 25 yards.  Between the depth of the water and the "shortened" distance of the bulkhead it confused my mind.  I ended up having to glance forward right before my turns to ensure I turned in the right place.  Otherwise I would have had a headache or I would have completely missed the wall for the push off.

Everything worked out alright in the end and I swam a 25:55 for the 1500 meter TT.  I had to check with the pool to make sure I knew what overall length this pool was.  I thought it was a 50 yard pool but after asking I found it was 50 meters.  Now everything in my mind was screwed up!  The time for my swim reflects a fatiguing 1:35 per 100 yard average or 1:43 per 100 Meter average.  I could have been a little faster given a more fresh body and a little more familiarity to the way the flip turns would have to be worked out.  I'm happy with the swim overall.

I began my 14 mile long run later (at 10:30) and suffered a little from the heat.  My pace was much, much slower and I was covered in white powder when I completed the run.............Yeah!  I was a salty mess.  When I took my tri top off I watched white dust flicker in the sunlight.
