Veteran 281 | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Hey Turtles!!!!!! It is GREAT to be a Turtle! It took me 45 minutes to read the races and I am proud to be associated with this group! You are all wonderful. I love reading the race reports and learning on things "to do" and "not to do!" As a rookie in this sport, this is so helpful to me. I guess I am the last one to compete in an outdoor tri (FBP you have done one already ??????). My first one is coming up June 22nd and I will no longer be a Tri Virgin! Leston & Juanita: You both were AWESOME in your training and completion of your races. Times were outstanding and your reports are great to read. I am proud of you both for finishing - how inspiring. Thank you for being here. I was thinking of both of you last weekend and glad to hear how well you did! (Juanita - I LOVE THE PICS! Thanks). Bryan: Your wife and daughter did AWESOME as well! Make sure you put their races as a "Finish Line" on the front page!!!!!! They are Turtles by osmosis (sp?). Mav: Good luck this weekend, all my thoughts will be with you! My wife (Anne Marie) and I had a GREAT trip to Scottsdale, I have to thank the insurance company for sending us. It was one of the best trips I have ever taken. We went to a Diamondback baseball game, golfing, massages, horseback riding GREAT dinners every night and the last night they hired REO Speedwagon to play for about 200 of us! It was our own private concert! I only got in 2 workouts in 5 days (and killed a lot of brain cells!). We did a spin class and he did thing call "jumps" on the bike that I have never done before. They really wore me out (you would pedal 10 times standing, then sit for 9 rotations, then stand for 8, sit for 7, etc. until you got to 1 then went back up again! It was cool and fun to do something different on a stationary bike - but I missed Leonidas!!!!! I will ride him tonight then swim tomorrow morning. Bryan, my wife is mad at you! She wants to know why I listen to you about going to the Dr's for my foot when she suggested it 3 weeks ago!!!!!! hmmmmmmmmph! Couple of odd items: 1. Bryan - you need to update my age on the front page as I turned 47 on Tuesday! 2. WAY TO GO RED WINGS! We got home last night when as I was reading your posts, but with the game on, I didn't take the time to type anything as I was watching! 3. I need to get in an OWS in a wet suit as I have not done this yet. I promise I will before my race! I'll be back soon! sTRIve on Turtles! Dan Edited by MSUDan 2008-06-05 5:17 PM |

Veteran 113 Salt Lake City area | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! I must be nuts! The things I let my business partners talk me in to...! They had the great idea to do another epic bike journey. They have absolutely no sympathy for my inexperienced tushie. The latest butt-killer was an 80 mile loop through some beautiful mountain scenery. It was very pretty and green (as soon as summer hits it will not take long for it all to turn mostly brown). But it was a killer ride. But I love my Scarlett, and the more I ride her, the more I like it. Does anyone know if La-Z-Boy makes a bike saddle? I could really use that. Mav, have a great time on your race this weekend! Welcome back, Dan. I need to get out and do an OWS with my wetsuit too. Hopefully this weekend if I can walk by then. --Leston |

Extreme Veteran 1338 | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! FBP - sticka - No real issues on the flat, straight road except the back of your jersey will probably get a wet, dirty streak down it from the spray off the back tire. The big issues start on the corners or if evasive action is required. They can get hairy fast, you must must must slow down. Also, this only applies after the oily residue has been washed off the road. Early in the moisture is like glass. Be very careful. |

Extreme Veteran 1338 | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Mav - go get em girl....good luck Dan - tell her you went because of her...not me....how long have you been married man???? You ALWAYS go because she tells you....rofl Dan - get in OWS and practice getting in and out of that wetsuit....you too LESTON....you need to practice. Be sure to pull the wetsuit well up the legs and waist to be sure you have enough room in the shoulders....use Body Glide or something like it for all areas subject to chafe. Leston - go to your LBS - see if they will let you buy a seat...try if for a while, if it doesn't work take it back and try another...many LBS will let you do this or they may have demo seats to try. There is also an online dealer who will send you a box of seats for demo and they hold a deposit until you return them. Then you pick the one you want. Seats are a very personal thing...it depends on so many factors. Gentlemen (and Ladies) - YOU SHOULD NOT GO NUMB IN YOUR PRIVATE AREAS WHILE ON THE BIKE. From a urologist, "you are doing damage to yourself you don't want to do" - I am no medical professional but I am certain in this - if something goes numb that is not designed to go numb, it probably is not a good thing. Find a seat that works. Period. Numb is dumb. By the way, numb is different than sit bone discomfort. If you are just sore on the sit bones that just may need toughening of the sit bones but again, your special parts should not go numb. Thank you for being adult as we discuss this and not giggling....at least I couldn't hear you. If you want more information, let me know. Dan - happy birthday dude... age changed Mav - you will forever be "young" on page one...I am not ABOUT to change that number without your direction...although that new number may be "fast" - so when is the big day? sTRIve Edited by left.right.repeat 2008-06-05 9:57 PM |

Extreme Veteran 1338 | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! By the way, I did a 30 mile HILLY ride on Saturday...I actually rode with about 900 people doing a charity ride. On 4 hills over 50% of the people walked their bikes and that number was closer to 80% on two of those hills. I went down to 4.2 mph going up one of them...I thought I was going to start going backwards or just stop and fall over but I made it....I did hit 47.3mph on one of the downhills....that is a 1:16per mile pace.....man it was fast...I was thinking if I went down I would leave parts of me for about 500 yards.... Here's a thought on climbing hills....don't try to mash heavy gears.....get downshifted very early....try different methods but this one seems to work well for me....as the pressure increases I drop the gears to keep the same cadence....all the way to granny gear....I only slow cadence if I have to in granny....this seems to save the quads. Also, if you stand up on the pedals...it usually takes me 3 or 4 gears up to keep may body supported and be comfortable from the gear I was pedalling on seated.... Basic thought is - never be afraid of using those gears...that's why they are there. I shift a lot, and my advice is, you should too....I try to ride a pretty consistent cadence of 90-95 revolutions per minute (that's 15-16 per 10 seconds if you don't have a computer) Let me know if you need help figuring your cadence manually. sTRIve B |

Uxbridge | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Tommorow is IT!!!! I am excited, and yes, a little nervous. I've trained and I know I can do it. I am NOT looking forward to the heat, and I am in the last wave, so it will be hot by the time I get to the run. I am ready, evertyhing is packed, my bike is clean and shiny and looking FAST. My nails are done and looking fast!LOL We are heading up this morning. We have a few stops to make along the way. I plan to swim a little today. It is raining now and that will drop the temps. I am actually glad the water is cold as with air temps as high as 90 my body temp will be good going into the bike. Its really the run that worries me. I know I can do it but it will be hard...thats what its all about...pushing limits! I will take pics, posting them will be another story. There is a 1/2 IM on Sun. I plan on watching and taking in the excitement. Who knows, maybe next year I'll be one of them. I cant thank you all enough for all your support along this journey. I know I can do it because of all of you. I'll be thinking of you all as I move toward that finish line!!!!!!!! sTRIve mav |

Detroit can once again properly be called "Hockeytown USA". Kinda glad they beat the Pens since the Pens took out my beloved Senators in the first round of the playoffs. B - thanks for the comments about wet-weather ridining. Loved the comment "Numb is Dumb". As I was cycling into work this morning I noticed the sign for a consignment clothing store downtown - Green Turtle Clothing. OMG, turtles are everywhere!! This has to be a good omen for us all. This was a great race...a hard race...a hot race...and a race with LOTS of HILLS. Did I tell you it has lots of hills?????? I don't remember the last time I felt this great and excited. I am still in NH . The condo we rented is beautiful. Complete with sauna, hot tub and jaccuzzi. It is at the base of a ski mountain. I CANNOT THANK YOU ALL ENOUGH! I thought about you all during various points during the race.It really helped me get through some of the rougher mental spots especially on the run. Everytime I dumped ice water over my head I thought of your advice Bryan. I will write a race report at a later time along with some pics. My husband didnt get too many. Uxbridge | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! OK here goes... Got up at about 5:00 to get to the site. Didn't sleep well the nite before, I never do. Drove to the lake which was about 15 mins from the condo. It was so FOGGY that you could barely see boats along the shore. I told AL that they would never start on time as it was unsafe to put that many people in the water without being able to see. Couldnt get parking so Al dropped me at the gate. Set up my stuff in transition. It was cool about 65 but very muggy. Temps were predicted in the 90's. I didnt know what to do about clothing for the bike, so I set out a short sleeve bike jacket with my nutrition in it.The race was delayed over an hour because of the fog. I did NOT go in the water until about 10 mins before my wave. It was about 60 degrees. This was a very smart move as others were very cold. I also wear a pair of old socks on the beach to keep my feet warm and to prevent getting cuts(I got a cut on my foot during my first race). I just dispose of them before entering the water. The swim absolutely sucked. It was a wading start. For some reason I decided I wasnt good enough to go to the front of the pack so I went to the back. I was in the washing machine for what seemed like over half the race. I was kicked, grabbed, swam over, you name it. I really think people couldnt see and they were all over the place. Sighting was very difficult because of the fog. I managed to break away the last third of thee swim and get some speed going. They had shortened the distance to .6 miles. I finished in 19:47. T1 was Ok, they had wet suit strippers which was awesome. You get your suit off to your hips, lay on a mat and they pull it off...fun. I couldnt decide if I should wear my jersey. In the end I went without, but this required I take out my nutrition and put it in my tri suit. TIME wasted. Got on my bike and got stuck behind people walking their bikes. Got on my bike and away I went... T1 3:52 The big hill in the race was not bad at all. I climbed without a problem, alot of people walked. I cheered for myself at the top. My race nuber was 911...so there was alot of banter during the race about my number which was so much fun. This ride is just so beautiful. I was glad I had gone and done the route a couple of weeks before the race or I would have been tempted to take in the scenery. The hills were grueling as the temps heated up. I think I may have hit 40 on one of the hills YEEEEHAAAA. By the end of the bike the sun was really out. I took it fairly easy at the end because the day before I developed a pain in my left hamstring which was causing my foot to numb up. I couldnt feel my middle toes and I knew I needed to save it for the run. This was avery smart decision in the end. I was psyched at the end of the bike. I knew I had done well. 1:44:59 avg 15.6 for 27.5 miles of "rolling hills" T1 was great 1:33. Can I tell you how great yanksz are? That was a great transition for me. THE RUN.... I had set a personal goal not to walk at all. I just felt like I wanted to complete it this way. So off I went....left right....repeat. At every aid station I took water and sipped and poured the rest on my head and neck and put my hat back on.This was aVERY hilly run. in the sun. hills , hills and more hills. L,R,R!!!!!! I ran with a young women who was stuggling for the first few miles. By the half way point I had to pee!!!! All the water and the long delay was catching up to me and I was getting uncomfortable. Off with the wet tri suit in a port-a-pot. This was by far, the worst part of the race!!!!!! I did struggle the last three miles but I kept my pace and my promise to myself. Had I not stopped for my break, I might have had a PR. Run time 1:05:14 The finish... You have to run along the sandy beach before you enter the chute for the finish, that was pretty difficult. Once I got in the chute I was completely overwhelmed with what I had accomplished, I SPRINTED down the chute. I had a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes and a smile a mile wide on my face. This will be one finish pic I will buy from the pro photograhers. I cannot even begin to describe how great this was..never in my life could I have imagined completing this type of event.!!!!! It was GREAT!!!! They had people after the finish who handed you cold water bottles, a towel and put you medal on. Then they had a place where you put your foot and they take off your timing chip so you dont have to bend over. Can I tell you how nice this was. I felt like I was being pampered!!!. I was able to see Al right after and share my joy. It was a terrific experience. Finish Time 3:15:24. My goal was under 3:30 and I did it!!!!! Overall I placed 230/322 of the women. Overall in the race 584/730. AG 12/16. This was a HIGHLY competative race. The winner finshed in under 2 hours. I met a women in my AG who has swum the English channel.( but she had also painted her toes"I don't do dishes pink"). I met some very interesting people and had a great time. For dinner last night we went to a local restaurant and met up with some folks from BT who are doing the 70.3 today. Al and I are going to watch and then I plan on doing an OWS before we head home. No time like the present to resume training!!!! Again...you were all with me along the way... I couldn't have done it without you!!! mav |

Extreme Veteran 553 New Brunswick, Canada | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Fantastic race mav and fanastic race report !! I smiled at the comment about the chip removers. I too really appreciated them after my marathons when I was so toght that I could barely lift my foot up onto a curb, let alone bend over to take a chip off. I suspect one of the funniest sights in running history was me at the Dublin marathon (my first) trying to get my warm up pants on after the race! I did a good ride yesterday - 36 k - part of which was along a stretch of road that will part of the race course for my July 6th Sprint. It was the last section of the course that I hadn't been out to pedal on. Now that I've seen the whole course I have a really good picture in my mind's eye of where the tough spots will be, where it's dangerous due to road conditions and where it'll be fast. Today I went for a run on the course we'll be using and I wore my race clothes for a test. It's a lovely little circuit that surrounds the lake where the swim is held. Path is really nice and "cushy" underfoot. It's a touch narrow in spots but I suspect by the time I get there the field will be pretty stretched out Mav - so proud of you for your accomplishment. You've set a new standard for the group I'd say since I believe you've the first "mentee" to do an Oly !!

Not only did you accomplish an amazing feat, you did so under way less then favorable circumstances. Fog?! UNREAL. I can't imagine having to WAIT for an hour. My nerves would have been shot. Wow. Temperature wise, we got up into the 90s early here last weekend too, so I could relate to running through hills in the heat. And I removed my cap and poured water on my head at every aid station too, but I couldn't run the course. AND YOU DID! YOU ROCK GIRL! CONGRATULATIONS!!! WTG, Marriane!

Extreme Veteran 553 New Brunswick, Canada | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Question for our stronger swimmers ... I am still not very comfortable with bi-lateral breathing and often end up "taking on water" when breathing to the right side. So, today during my lunchtime swim I practised three different techniques - left side breathing every stroke, bi-lateral breathing and left-side breathing every second stroke. I was pleasantly surprised that method 3 seemed comfortable - at least more comfortable than method 2. Any comments about the pros/cons of breathing same side every stroke vs. every second stroke? It was great spending it with my wife in Scottsdale (although I did miss not being with my kids!). Juanita - I love the card ;^) ... Sticka: GREAT question on the swimming. Although I have gotten much stronger on my swims (I swam 1,250m without stopping the other day and finished 1600m for the entire workout!), I still must breath on every right hand stroke. I am very, very uncomfortable breathing on my left side at anytime! On my first lap, I can breath every other stroke, but after my first lap, I must breath on every stroke. I am very interested in seeing the responses to your question. btw, that was a hilarous video - I am sure that will be me in a couple of weeks! Bryan: I have a dr's appointment with a podiatrist that "specializes" in sports medicine on Wednesday. I will let you know what he says.
