chartierm22 - 2009-06-11 3:33 PM Ok guys, another bike question.  I have a MTB bike and am thinking it would be nice to get a road bike, but money is quite tight.  Now, I can get a 74' schwin or a slightly newer fuji both with original parts for free but I'm thinking that the expense in getting them road ready might be too much.    Do parts on bikes "go bad"  I know for sure they need new tires, or should I just stick with my MTB?  As you can probably tell I know nothing about bikes.

Using your MTB for tris would probably work.  My wife did her 1st 2 tris on a MTB.  We just bought her some 'slicks'--MTB tires with no tread and much thinner than normal MTB tires.  Check our www.nashbar.com for tires.  Probably about half the cost of the local bike shop.

I'm thinking the 74 Schwinn is a 1-piece crank, and would be tough to upgrade.

I would look into the Fuji.  If it's a little newer and has a 2-piece crank and Shimano parts, it's probably worth upgrading.  You can order thinner tires from Nashbar sometimes for less than $15 a piece.  A new seat for less than $30.  If you want to put a little more money into it, you could replace the frame shifters and brake levers with 'brifters' (shifting with the brake levers).

Send some pics.  I'd be curious to see if the Fuji might be worth upgrading.

Bingo!  Tires on sale at Bike Nashbar...

Disclaimer:  Make sure your rims support tires this thin.  1.5 inches may not fit on older rims, but would on some of the newer MTB rims.  You could always find a 2 inch width tire just to be safe.

MDHillSlug - 2009-06-11 9:24 AM I've been having some pain in my right heel; could this be the start of plantar fasciiitis?

Hopefully not.  PF (aka Princess Feet) is nasty.  Is it worse when you get up in the morning?  That's a typical sign.  If you even suspect PF start stretching hamstrings, soleus etc.  I also roll my feet on a golf ball and ice regularly.  Had a bad bout a couple years ago that lasted over 9 mos.  I spend at least 10 - 15 mins stretching after every run.   Keeping my princess toes crossed that it's a false alarm.

I also have PF. I use a frozen water bottle to roll my foot over.

(random thoughts)
So, I've been doing a bit of research on food lately and am finding that the more I read the more I wonder exactly what it is that is going into my body.  Kind of scary.  I'm seriosly considering cutting dairy out of my diet.  I'm mostly there.  I'm also trying to get more fruits and veggies into my diet.

Bikes that old would be steel and could be heavy. Many of the rubber/plastic parts could need replacing: tires, tubes, brake pads, cable housings, and cables. Also, the bottom bracket, headset, and wheel bearings may need service and repacking.

You can put slick tires on your MTB and it will make the bike more comfortable to ride and help make it go faster, and should cost less than $20 per tire.

I have a friend who is also looking for a bike, she just found one on target.com that has road bikes in different sizes. Not sure how much but I know her budget was under $300. Just a thought if you really wanted to get something.

surfnturf - 2009-06-11 2:58 AM That's cool. Do you have a lot of bike paths and such in Greece? We don't have many where I am but I would definitely ride more if it was safer and we had more paths.

Apart from a bike route by the sea there are no other bike paths whatsoever! and the drivers are soooo rude, there is no respect towards the, very few, cyclists that dare use the streets. Also, there are parked cars on the pavements making it very difficult to be used by either pedestrians or cyclists. But I'm crazy and love cycling so much to be stopped by the dangerous conditions in my city.

I feel you! I also need to get a road bike, but I'm kinda short of money so I'm doing all my trainning and aslo commute on my city bike, which has only 7 gears!
I suggest you replace the tires with slik and thinner ones as others said. You'll see a great improvement.
