Ryan - I can't fully answer your question because I haven't done the HIM before but I do know that the one entrance to Ellacoya state park is a madhouse the morning of the HIM.  Rt. 11 is the only way in, depending on where you're staying you can come from the east or west but it gets backed both ways regardless.  As I said I can't speak to how backed up because I haven't done the HIM but it probably makes sense to leave yourself an extra half hour in the morning...less stress, less worry, lower HR, and you probably won't be sleeping a full night anyway!

Hope this helps
Ray

I can give you my experience from last year on logistics.  Brownie pretty much has it.

I stayed in Concord last year and drove up to Gunstock early in the AM and took the shuttle down to Ellacoya.  I was there early and had plenty of time.  This year I'm probably going to get dropped off because we are going in a group.  I could have parked in Ellacoya too, but just now that if you don't go early you will be waiting in a big line.  I remember it being a traffic jam in the morning and the cars trying to get in were sort of screwed.  They ended up having a delay anyway, but do yourself a favor and go on the early side of things.

Also, one big note.  If you do park at Gunstock and don't have a friend or relative with you.  Waiting for the busses to take you back after the race took F O R E V E R.  Reason I'd elect to show up super early and park there because waiting in line for 90 minutes in the heat after doing the half was a PITA to be honest.  It was really the only complaint I had.  There isn't much they can do realistically except add more buses to streamline it.  The race is awesome.  After doing RI last weekend, I am even more looking forward to it this year.  It is a really great race and the race director (Keith Jordan) is well respected.  Every race he does is awesome from what I hear.  I would honestly go out of my way a little to do a race he puts on if I was thinking of a couple of different races to put on the schedule....

Is Keith Jordan still organizing this race?  The reason I ask, is that the race website has a new URL and slightly different look/feel than in the past when Endorfun was obviously in charge.   Now, I don't see anything like that.  Also, in the past, Keith would show up from time to time on the message boards here at BT and update us or answer questions, or comment about how preparation for the race was going along and we haven't heard a whisper from him this year.  It all seems a bit peculiar to me.

Also, has anybody heard if they have eliminated the Timberkids day camp?  I was hoping to get my little ones signed up this year, but I can't find any information on the website.

I have emailed them a couple times about The Timberkids adventure race that they are supposed to have on Saturday (since they have no info about it on the site) and have never gotten a response.  The first time I emailed someone emailed me back and said they were forwarding it to someone else who could answer and I never got a response.  The second time I never got any response at all.   My daughter wants to know what its about and may want to do it, but I have no info to tell her.

I have a question about spectators- My husband will have our 2 kids ( 7yr old  and 16 mo old) there to watch the race.  We are staying at Mill River Falls which is probably a 15 min drive.  I plan to get to race site really early but don't expect them to be up at 4am with me.  I would love for them to see me cross the finish line for sure, and any other time they see me in the race is bonus.  What would you all suggest I have him do in terms of coming to the race site (what time to get there, where to park etc) so that they can definitely be there for second half of the race... I don't know what roads will be open for him to get to the park etc.  Or will it be impossible for him to get there if he is not there from the start all day?

Re: Keith Jordan, I believe he's still a part of it.  However, it's now obviously an Ironman 70.3 event (hence the website change) and information on the race is much harder to come by this year.  Not sure why that is or whether Keith is, in fact, still running the show, but the entire format of the web information is now in line with the rest of the Ironman brand events.

Re: TimberKids - it looks like they're still having it this year if the schedule of events is to be believed. 1pm at Ellacoya.  Beyond that your guess is as good as mine.

What I am actually looking for is the Timberkids Camp which had taken place on the day of the 70.3 race.  They would watch the kids for you and have them participate in a bunch of activities while the wives and husbands of racers watched or participated together.

Timberman has been an Ironman 70.3 event for a few years now, but it looks like it is now owned by Ironman and not Endorfun, which is Keith Jordan's outfit.

Good observation.  Your right.  I don't know what's up this year.  I know last year I reached out to him and he replied promptly to a question I had but I've been sort of head down on it this year.

Sam, you and I had a similar day it looks like!  5th OA, 1st in AG.  Local race, smallish (250 or so), so it's somewhat misleading (i.e. the 'fasties' were doing the OLY, bigger sprints, or resting up for Placid) but I'll take it!  Race report coming as soon as splits are posted, I'll link it here.

Just posted my RR if anyone is interested in reading it.

Surprisingly the 1-hour post-race endurance run wasn't that bad, I figured in the heat and on tired legs I'd be slogging through the whole thing but I felt strong for nearly the entire thing.  I think the legs are starting to come back finally!

Hope everyone had a great training weekend, it was BEAUTIFUL here in Boston, training can be so much fun in this weather.  Less than 5 weeks of training left, time to bear down for the final stretch here!

Runnerx: I have a Litespeed Tachyon circa 2000-ish; HED carbon fiber 3 spoked wheels (650s; that was the cool size to have at the time, but I'd get 700s now)...it's a dinosaur, but it's a
T-Rex...at least I keep telling myself that. It's better than feeling sorry for myself in transition seeing all the wicked-cool "modern" bikes.

Brownie: Thanks. It looks like you had a heck of a day. The course sounds kinda' cool, except for the rough road. By the way, I use Lock Laces and I think they are the best. I've used other lacing systems, but I think Lock Laces are superior. However, other people have had great success with other systems. Just don't rule them out. They are pretty cheap too.

Good swim this morning. (1.2mi-ish in 36 min. and change). Looking to ride 60 miles today (was going to do it yesterday, but ended up having to change plans).

Peace.

Well done Sam & Brownie - sounds like you both had fun races as well as smoking performances! Glad to hear you both finished healthy also. Gearing up for the NJ Olympic this weekend...I suspect a non wetsuit 1500M is on the cards. Yikes!

I invested in some Pearl Izumi Syncro Float III's today for an outstanding price at Gazelle Sports...our local running speciality store had its summer tent sale. I'm looking forward to wearing them, but they will be on reserve because I have some other shoes that are not ready to be "benched" yet.

I MIGHT have some HUGE news regarding a new sweet rig coming up...we'll see. I'll keep you posted.

Peace.

Just 30 days out and this is my biggest week of training to date--and will be the biggest leading up to the race, period (17-18 hours in total).

I just did a 120 mile ride from Boston to Provincetown (on the tip of the Cape) yesterday; today is a 'rest' day (60 min swim, 45 min recovery ride) then tomorrow a 2.5 hr. TT ride, 40 min race-pace brick run and a long run on Sunday.  I hope I survive!

Out of curiousity: is this other people's 'big' week?  I'd imagine for most people it's either this week or next.  How's everyone doing with the volume?

It's amazing to think that we're less than a month out from the race!

Big week? Hmmmmm....hadn't thought of that as I'm still ramping up. Although, I'll be in Lake Placid, so I will be getting in perhaps my longest ride tomorrow (70ish miles...hopefully), and while I'll get in a 13 miler for the run this weekend, I'll probably be doing another couple of 13's, or further, in the next couple weeks, as I'm sort of in my NYC Marathon training too.
