pdbman - 2010-04-06 1:18 PM Crazy night at the pool last night.  Some lady was "teaching" some kids to swim in the laps lane. Basically taking up space holding on to kick boards. "Patience. Open plunge closes soon and it will be just lap swimmers." Then I look at the water and its cloudy. What's up with that?  Jump in and the water feels a little cooler but I brush it off to me being cold because of the snow storm. I start swimming and get about a third of the way when I hit this wall of warm water. That's strange. I guess they were putting fresh water into the pool and the way the "current" is in the pool, it creates a wall of warm water just before you get to the area where the water is coming in. Not too bad going from cold to warm but if I wasn't paying attention it would take my breath away when I would go from the warm water to the sudden cold. Plus for the first ten minutes until they cleared the pool I had to actually change lanes back and forth as people would keep drifting around. Some life guards are pretty good at keeping the lanes clear for lap swimmers, others are just too timid to say anything.

Hmmmmmm.  Kids in the pool and you're swimming through walls of cloudy warm water??? Blechhh! Frown

That is what I was thinking all along

WOW!  I'm really stoked right now.  I just got back from my ride and this is the first time I've averaged 20 MPH since my injury.  Really nice out today, but swirling winds, pretty much the norm for this time of year.  I got in just over 41 miles staying in aero about 80 percent of the time.  I felt pretty good except for some lower back sorness about mile 30.

OK Bill, let's try this again.  I think I could build this bike at roughly 20 lbs.  I just don't want to shell out the money for a new one.  Been watching Ebay for a used one.

I am very excited, too! I just finished building a race entry form at signmeup.com for our improved local triathlon. It was really fun. I'm sure I'll need to do some tweaking, but it was pretty easy so far.

By the end of July I hope to hand over this RD position to someone else, but for now I'm doing all the work.

Are you a volunteer or one of the organizers?  Very cool either way.

I am on the board of directors at our local YMCA, and the triathlon sub-committee. I have plenty of people that will help in very specific areas, but I'm the keeper of the collective knowledge. I just really, really don't want to be the one in charge on race day.

Thank you for your comments on my DL pictures! Yes, it does help to have that reminder in front of me every day!

Off to the Y for a short bike ride and a short swim!

Sorry I haven't checked in or come up with goals.  I was gone over the weekend, but managed to run a 5k.  Got sick with food poisoning last night, so I missed out on my bike class last night.  Not sure when I'm going to be able to get back into it.  Sorry team!

Me three!

What I failed to mention is that there was also the occasional blade of grass floating in the water.  My assumption is, since we had nice weather before the storm rolled in yesterday afternoon, was that they has the sliding glass doors open earlier in the day and people were going in/out bringing grass, dirt, etc in on their feet.  I really don't think the warmth generated by the kids, however they were generating it, could have produced enough heat to warm 3/4 of the pool.  My other thought was, whatever is making the water cloudy couldn't be any worse than what I would encounter in an OWS, plus the pool water is treated with an ultraviolet treating system and the usual chemicals.
There.  I am now done justifying my actions.

Again, this is based totally on looks, the most important factor, since I don't know anything about it other than its Specialized, which I do like.

Will that work for you or did you need them sooner?

I know he is popular.  TransIowa is giving away a bag from him!  Have to see how that works

Yeah... I'm in no hurry.  Still working on details.  The soonest I will head out is October.  No big deal.  I'm planning on a couple of shake down overnight hikes with my son first.  Obviously, it will be a little different with the bike, but at least I can get the camp essentials dialed in.

Right now, I'm racing on a 5" travel bike.  I have it built at roughly 25.5 pounds.  Completely overkill for XTERRA racing.  None of the coarses that I've raced needed anything close to that much travel.

So, by going with a carbon hardtail with steeper geometry and 100mm travel fork, not only will I shave over 5 pounds, but I'll get less wasted energy transfer from cranks to rear wheel.  I really don't think I would be sacrifing much in handling or comfort.

Paul - whatever works for you - you were swimming through urine - justify it how you want - LOL (j/k)

Sounds like a nice pool.

I swam at a Y in Nashville once that was awesome - sky lights and big windows - it was like you were outside!  But no urine - LOL  alright dropping it right there - LOL!

Yeah, its a nice place.  They have two indoor pools. One is the recreational pool with a waterslide and play area for the kids, a walking exercise area with a current and a lane for lap swimming.  There is a competition pool with the diving boards, etc and more lap swimming lanes.  This is used by the high school and community swim teams and water aerobics so its not always open to the public. Then they have an olympic size pool outside, another pool for platform diving, and two more recreational pools. Not to mention the weight lifting, basketball, and other misc classes and things they have. Our fee for our family is less than $21 a month. Can't beat that, unless you're overly concerned about urine in the pool.

Leetle bike and leetle swim done for today. My % will always look like I'm behind because I have a race week at the beginning of the month, but don't worry, I've never not met my goals for a challenge.
