I don't know if I told you guys or not, but I had a phone interview yesterday. I spoke with 3 people at the place where I could be working. I think it went pretty well. They asked me several questions, and most of the time I didn't even have to finish the answer, I would say one particular thing they were looking for and they would tell me that was all they needed to hear and then they moved on to the next question. I'll let you know what happens. Even if I take it I am still hoping that the company who is bidding on a job at a different base in July gets that contract so I can go there. The job I interviewed for yesterday would be almost an hour away. It would be straight down the highway, but to drive 2 hours a day is a lot. Even if I am offered the job, I need to find out what the hours are, and if they're flexible before I can take it. My evenings are pretty busy, I can't work somewhere until 5:00 and drive an hour home. That would get in the way of soccer, basketball, jiu jitsu, my sanity. Can't do it!
Ann, give it very careful consideration before taking a job with that kind of commute. Even if they say they are flexible, see if you can talk to others and find out what the actual practice is in the office. 2 hours a day of commuting with young kids does not sound like a good idea. Advice given from the 2 1/2 hour + per day commuter. As much as I really want to get out of here, it would be even worse to be stuck with a long commute and no flexibility. |

Two hours a day is TEN hours a week. Even if you WFH one day a week it is 8 hours. Coming in and leaving early might help, but it is still a lot of time in the car. I don't want to sound negative but that's a lot of windshield time. I'm doing it, but for different reasons and with different personal commitments. Now, if they tell you 1 day a week in the office and 4 days wfh....GO FOR IT. All that said, you have to decide what is right for you. |

From talking with the people yesterday, it didn't sound like WFH was an option, plus I would have to work 1 Saturday every 3 months, and be on call for a month at a time every 3 months. I was just sent an email from the recruiter who had originally contacted me asking me to fill out 2 forms. They wanted to do a background check, a credit check, verify past employment, verify my residence, verify education, and a few smaller things. I replied back telling her that without being offered a job, and me accepting it, I was reluctant to provide that much personal information.

Ann, you did the right thing. Those are typically done after an offer, which is contingent upon successfully completing all the various *checks.* (at least that's been my experience as a candidate and a hiring manager.) It does sound, however, like they may be making an offer. I wouldn't go to that trouble and expense on someone I didn't plan to offer the candidate a job. |

I am missing swag bag stuffing tonight because I will be at werk, and that's where we usually go down the final checklist of who is doing what, when. Ugh. But, it frees up tomorrow night for me to do everything I should already have done today, right? At least I was smart enough to take Thursday off work, when I have to have packets ready for racers to pick up Friday afternoon. Ugh. 72 hours from now we'l be handing out awards and we'll be done for a few months. While I work on tri stuff, I am also coordinating marathon stuff. I'm a little behind on my job there. Oops.
i haven't even had breakfast yet. Anyone want to come kidnap me for lunch? I think that's the only way i would get away with anything other than fast food eaten while driving. |
