As you all know I use a Garmin watch and last year I wore the watch during the entire race.  I am wondering does everyone else also wear their watch during the swim or do you just start using it at the bike portion.  The hubby was watching me swim the other day and he notice that I slap the water with my watch arm so we are wondering if that is the reason.

LRR, good luck today!!!

Kathy, I have a Garmin 310XT, which is waterproof, so I do wear mine for the entire race. I just switch into multisport mode and keep changing sports for each leg. I haven't noticed any changes in my swim stroke because of the watch, but then again, I haven't had anyone watch me, so anything is possible! I know, much help I am

Happy Memorial Day, everyone! What are everyone's plans?
I'm doing 1.5 run and 1 hr bike, then off with my hubby and my boys for a bike ride to the park (little dude in the trailer) and to DQ, then just hanging out in the back yard and splashing in the pool.

Me too Billy!!  Working 7a-9p.  Can you say rest day??

Hope the Oly is good LRP.

Irishod, hope the family has a good race!!  Esp the wife!

KTC .  I plan to wear my garmin for my Oly next week end, Did my first OWS this year in frigid water, 60s.  Wore the heart monitor and forgot the watch.  And duh, it doesn't monitor heart rate in the water.  Plan to swim again, this week, hope there are no issues.  Cake girl, do you ear watch over or under the wetsuit?

Hope everyone is enjoying the day, and thank God for our soldiers, past and present!!   God Bless you all!

Lena...LOVE those angry birds....If Billy gets an IM cake...I want one too I agree with everyone else that you do NOT need to do Racine. You finished last year which is more than 99.9% of the rest of the population could do!!! Be proud of what you have done.

How did it go today Bryan?

I did a sprint 2 weeks ago, first one in 2 years. Lots of fun

Sorry I have been so absent. My son is buying a house and my daughter is moving into his condo. Life is an adventure of boxes andpacking peanuts!!!!

I promise to try and be more active...it took forever to read all the good stuff going on here!!!

I kayaked the swim for CapTex yesterday...bad news is I pulled 3 from the water... good news is that none of them were LRR!

It was truly an amazing experience to see and talk to a number of the challenged athletes. One wave in each distance was the paratriathletes, and these men and women are awesome, and very inspirational. Even as a 2-time cardiac guy, you quickly understand what pales in comparison, that your own challenges are relative. My hat is off to them.

Triple,  Great job on the kayak!!  Sure those people were glad you were there!!

I have a few last minute questions so I hope some of you are online because I need answers fast.  Doing my last minute prep for the race which is Sat.  So excited!!!!

1.  I know this may not be medically recommended, BUT, do any of you older triathletes take Ibuprophen before the race?

2.  Does anyone race with a fuel belt?  I have been training with it on the run and have gotten very used to drinking a few sips every 4 minutes during my 1 min walk interval.  I am strongly thinking of wearing it with 2 or 3 bottles and filling as needed at the water stations.  It is only an OLY so not sure how many water stops there will be but shouldn't need but one refill.

3.  Last year in the HIM, I had cut up Cliff bars (diff flavors so I was always surprised as to what I would get) in a ziplock in my Bento bag on my bike.  I had a hard time getting them out of the bag on the bike so I was thinking to just dump them in the Bento bag and wash it later.  Does anyone do that??  Or have a better system?

Thanks guys for any help!!

First off, Good Luck Ann and you will do great!

1.  I haven't used Ibuprofen in recent years but have in the past and my hubby did become he ran his HM.  If you have trained with taking it then and it hasn't bothered you then go ahead, medical personally might disagree with me but that is my feeling.  But if you haven't trained while using it then I would not do it race morning.

2.  My fuel belt has detachable water bottles.  I use the water bottles for training purposes but not for races.  I have seen people use the bottles for races, it is whatever you feel comfortable with.  If you want the water when you need it then by all means take it with you.  Remember go with what you are comfortable with.  If you try to go with what the norm does and that makes you change your plans then you will have a miserably race.  (I learned this from experience).  Go with what you are comfortable with!!!!!!

3.  That is exactly what I do with mine.

4.  Go and have fun!

I too have a race this weekend, a HIM distance and I am going in with the attitude of this is nothing more then a training race.  I might be in last place but that is okay as this is not my A race.  I will be testing out my game plan for IMKY, and to see how much I have improved over the last few months and what I still might need work on.

More then likely I will not be back till Sunday night so good luck with everyone who is racing this weekend!  And for those out there training remember how lucky we are to be able to do what we love.

Ann, if you've been training with the race belt and feel like you will need those sips of water, you may want to race with it as well.  I usually train with one, but don't race with it.  If it's a hot race, I may carry a bottle of gatorade or water with me, but when racing I don't want anything extra around my waist.  It's a personal preference.  And yes, I have just cut up bars before and put them straight in the bento box.  Just remember to empty it after the race or not telling what you'll find in there the next time.

Have great races this weekend to those of you racing!!!!

Good luck everyone racing this weekend.
Send some good weather vibes to Seattle, Please.
Racing in the rain is one of my favorite books.
It's not my favorite hobby.

Mark

Here is an article from the Cervelo engineers about the effects of bottle location on bike aerodynamics.
http://cervelo.com/en_us/news-blog/article/ask-the-engineers-hydration-and-aerodynamics/2930

Their recommendation is to mount a bottle horizontally on the aero bar extensions.  In wind tunnel testing, this location is faster than no bottle.

Cheers

I used to race with  fuel belt, but in Louisville, all I could think about is getting that thing off of me.  It seems like the longer races make everything seem compounded.  Just remember, just because it worked on y ou short to medium training events doesn't mean it will work on the longer race days.  One thing I learned on ironman race is , always have a contingency plan with a contingency plan for the contingency plan!
