I skipped my run yesterday evening (too cold and windy) and just spun on the bike instead. At this point you arent going to make any additional hay, you just need to maintain what you have built up and missing one workout wont hurt that.

Oh, and I am in bed EVERY night by 9pm. Thats not a bad thing! Sometimes the body just needs rest.

. Normal. You're supposed to be tired now. Enjoy the rest.

Pretty much my set up.  Torpedo, one off the back and I'm putting my gear (tube, co2, etc) in a bottle on the down tube.

Yep! In bed by 8, slept until 5:30. Woke up and could have slept some more.  Last night I skipped my run due to the drop in temp. My husband, whose doing the Ironman too, has been sick for days. As this point, I'm just praying I don't catch what he has.

was going with the down tube bottle for gear but I had space between the behind the seat bottle and my saddle. Thought it would be more aero to fill the gap with gear rather than adding a bottle

Aero bottle and a bottle in a cage. Second cage left open for extra grabs at Aid stations.

Tubes and cartrige in wedge bag behind the seat (and maybe a can of snuff to get me through a portion of the long day - LOL)

Bottle I'm using has a perfect cutout to fit between the aerobars so that will go there when it's empty and easy to refill on the go.

All nutrition in Bento and a few extra things in bike jersey. Theoretically, I will not need to stop on the bike, but probably will around mile 60 - 70 to self check, mental break, pee, etc.

I'm envious.  I have a 2 month old so sleeping for that long is an impossibility.

Ha.  Cycling is my mental break.  It's generally how I clear my head in real life.  I'm putting half my nutrition in my bento and the other half in a zip lock bag in my down tube bottle.  Just going to switch them out halfway through.

Anyone have experience with the solid nutrition on the course?  I will bring my "first course", but planned on getting additional bonk breakers from the aid stations.  Those packages, I've come to realize, can be a little difficult to open.  Do they have them "pre-opened" at the aid stations?  Or am I on my own?  I will have nutrition that's not offered on the course on me, but trying to avoid having every last thing on me to start the race (or have to rely on my special needs bag).  Are the bananas generally halved?

You both are animals for getting through this with children that young.  I just hope my 2.5 year old is not old enough to remember "that time when dad disappeared for half of every weekend".  But at least my wife tells me that every time my child sees a biker on the road now, he yells "daddy!" Smile

We're newlyweds of only 5 months so no kids yet.  I can barely take care of myself most days so  can't imagine doing all of this training with children. You guys are amazing.

I have a 7 year old too..... It's all about the planning and pretending to be not tired all the time.

We all have a story or a reason that makes others go "Damn....that's cool/impressive/crazy/etc. Doing this with small kiddo's isn't all that to me.....it's why I'm doing the race.

Most of my race is dedicated to my dad. A two-tour vietnam vet who went through more than what I'll be putting my body through for those short 15-17 hours on 5/18. He lost his battle to cancer in 2011 after a short but hard fought battle with it. He cancer was linked to his time in 'Nam....so he basically gave his life for this country. He was a fit man who worked out daily and he taught me how to swim at the age of 3. Whenever my body is about to give up....he's my "go to" thought. At his funeral I had people that I didn't know or even knew me, ask me about my marathons and triathlons. He talked about me that much and was proud of my doing endrance races....so much so that he told others. In my "dungeon" where I do all my trainer work, I have a shadow box of his medals (including 3 national defense medals, a navy comindation with V for Valor) and I have his dog tags hanging there. Tags that hung around his neck while being shot at......kinda puts things into perspective.

This race is for him........

Fun little fact that I as a retailer was taught by the rep....the bonk breaker package is designed with enough air in them to be squeezed to pop open. Then it's easy breezy to take out. Try it. Should fix the problem.

also, for those not in the area, here's my view of the run.

This might be a stupid question, but I've never done a race with gear check the day before.  Will we be able to access our transition bags the morning of the race?  I plan to run with a Fuel Belt.  Do I need to already have the bottles filled in the gear bag or can I add them race morning?  Thanks!

You have access to your gear bags the next morning (at least I did for my T1 bag in FL). I brought all of mine in my morning clothes bag (which I wasn't using). Dropped off the ones at the bike, and put the others in my bike special needs.

Taking a different approach this year, starting with 2 on the bike (with an empty slot for water) and packets of powder in SN on the bike, plus the other things I typically want/need.

Did 3 state 3 mountain in Chattanooga today, 50 degrees, gusty wind and heavy rain 90% of the time.. I figure it was a mental training day as well as a physical.. 67 miles and lots o' hills..  barely stopped at the rest areas as you'd cool off and start shaking uncontrollably...

ooops, ez weekend turned hard...

was in boston for a wedding, so ez tapered long run along the Boston Mary course in Newton, turned into 16.5 miles out and back across the heart break hillS (plural).  I ignorantly thought it was only one hill.  legs were sore after.

off an early 6 am flight home, drove straight to bike course, a few wrong turns later, a 100 mile bike, w/ch I thought was going to be easy ended up at 110 miles, my longest of the year.

yike, taper, or taperfest!?!?  gonna go ez for sure rest of way in

Road Condition Update - FM 1486 still has the nasty rough chip seal (with loose gravel construction signs posted road side) on the southbound lane only from the Montgomery county line for 10 miles south.

Starting from the Richard area, around the loop and half way down 1486 is a ROUGH RIDE. Once you clear the chip seal when you approach 105 it's like riding on water. The winds were pretty nasty on Saturday but with the cooler temps they were expected. At this point, I am in favor of the heat and less winds than cooler temps and high winds. Unless you have a power meter you don't realize how much extra work you doing into the wind as your heart rate is not 100% indicative of effort as I learned on my 100 mile, 10 mile brick on Saturday.
