Well I made up to Syracuse and it is hot and humid here. I can't believe summer decided to show up this weekend! What the heck? I also got to meet JoAnne and her husband and it was great to get to meet them here. We drove the bike course together and quite honestly my legs hurt in the car after driving the course with them LOL. Good thing we didn't check out the run course I would have been totally demoralized LOL.

It will be a challenging course for sure, lot's of climbing especially the first 15 to 20 miles on the bike. The run is going to be tough too with the hills and the heat isn't going to be kind to us tomorrow either. In any case it will certainly be a very good challenge for us tomorrow and I'm looking forward to it. The key here is to race smart so that will be the goal. I'll check in tomorrow after the race.

Saw JOANNE'S picture of the finish line on Facebook.   SOOOO excited for you IM Syracuse Junkies to run through it tomorrow.  I'm so glad you got to meet!    Yes, TONY, racing smart is very important in the heat and humidity.   Trust all your training and go get it done!

GO JOANNE and TONY!!!  Race smart and happy!  Laughing

Just checked athlete tracker and it appears both Joanne and Tony are through the swim and onto the bike! Hope they are having a good race!

Yep, MATT, I saw that too!   Tony spent almost 12 minutes in T1, though, so I'm hoping all's OK.  Since he's doing this as a training for IMWI maybe he'd planned that.  Let's hope!

They're both off the bike. Tony's first run split looks about in line with what he was planning.

I think that T1 must have been planned since T2 was similar and his bike split looks solid.

I wondered what was going on with the time delay.  I was at the gym with Lis and checking on things occasionally and it had nothing other than the swim split.  After the gym Lis and I went to the store and I checked there too.  Again, nothing more than the swim split.  I was getting pretty frustrated.

Enough with the griping.

Both Joanne and Tony are staying in their respective placement times so far.  Their swim and bike splits have them staying very close to the same position in their AG's.  That should be a good sign.

I hope they update the splits a little sooner than they have been as the race continues.

I'm on the dock digesting.before I go for a swim. The bike splits were only full 56 mile times, so there were no intermediate times. I haven't seen even a first run split for JoAnne yet, so hopefully she's carrying on.

Joanne is sitting the same AG place with her first run split.  Looks like she's keeping things moving alright.

Tony has moved up a couple of places with one more split to go before the finish.  The way the updates have been coming he's probably finished and we can't see it yet.

Both of them have had to suffer quite a bit.  I checked the current weather and the temp/heat index is 86/92 but there is a decent wind at 9 MPH out of the NW.  Hopefully that is providing some relief.  There's also some rain and/or thunder storms moving into the area.  That could provide some temporary relief as long as there is no danger from the storm itself.

Bring it home you two!!!

_________

Edit:

Joanne just got her run on for the second split!  She's nailing the second split.  She's picked up the pace by 2 minutes per mile and she's jumped up one place in her AG.

Nothing more for Tony yet.

Hope Joanne and Tony were able to put down good performances. Can't wait for the RR.

I was able to put in a solid 111km ride today in 3:29. Went for a quick 4k brick after. That was my longest ride by about 30k, but I felt good throughout. The strongest head winds were in the last 15k or so which was pretty tough. There were a few hills into the headwind that felt like I was about to go backwards. Pretty tough but I got through it. Hope everyone else was able to put down some good training this weekend.

First off let me say that you guys are awesome! Hands down this is the best group ever! Thanks to all for your support today, JoAnne and I really were trying to represent well for the Junkies today.

Secondly it was so awesome to get to meet JoAnne and her husband they are both awesome and I had a great time seeing them here in Syracuse and getting to spend some time with them. And Dirk before you decide to kick us out of the Junkies, JoAnne does have picture and she will post for you guys. I hope that keeps us in good standing with the rest of the group.

In all seriousness though Syracuse is a pretty challenging course and the bike course is very reminiscent of Wisconsin. So for those who are looking at IMWI next year you may want to consider this race as well. The run course not so much, that was absolutely brutal but I digress. I'll get a race report up tomorrow after I get home but here is a little summary of how today went for me.

Swim - 48:07 I was not happy with this at all but I'll take it. I think it was a minute faster over the last HIM LOL! One thing to note about the swim though there was a lot of weeds in the first and last 300 meters of the swim. They were all over, that part of the swim was not enjoyable. Otherwise I think for the most part I swam easy but I was getting tired on the way back. Not sure if it was the lack of training the last two weeks or just being tired. I need to think about this more but I definitely could have done better.

T1- 11:59 I know, I know but really I planned on this being a training run so I was totally unconcerned with the T1/T2 times. I was slow getting my wet suit off and getting my bike gear on and I hit the restroom which turned out to be a great move because I did not have to use it on the bike course. This was definitely intentional. Just to give you an idea I didn't swim with a top. I put on a cycling jersey for the bike leg like I would for IM.

Bike - 3:15 Man what a tough course for the first 20 miles. Lot's of hills and false flats all climbing. I feel like I killed it on the bike course. I think I did great today. What a huge improvement over last year. I'll get into it more in the RR on the course but I am so happy with this! All the hard work is paying off.

T2- 10:45 Well I was faster in T2 LOL! Honestly I'm not even concerned with this. IM will be slow as well. I changed from the cycling jersey to the tri top for the run. I basically treated my transitions like if I were doing IM.

Run - 2:34 Ok the run course here is HARD! No exaggration, carnage all over the course. I basically had to run/walk it. I knew after the bike that I was not going to be able to run the way I expected to. The heat and humidity were brutal so I walked all the hills and the aid stations and even then some. I ran the downhills wherever I could. It started downpouring at mile 12ish so I ran to finish in thunder, lightning and pouring rain. It was incentive enough for me to get done. Honestly I'm shocked that I did a 2:34 that was only 10 or 12 minutes off my HIM which I ran. I walked ALOT.

Last thing and not to make excuses but not training in the heat and humidity made this race very tough just because it was so hot and humid today. The thunderstorms rolled in with the wind and pouring rain at the end that was just unbelievable! I basically have two kinds of luck in triathlon bad and none when it comes to the weather. This seems to be the norm for me. What's next snow and IMWI this year? Don't answer that one. All in all I'm pretty happy with the results considering everything. I see where I need to improve, I see where I have improved and I learned several valuable lessons then will help me over the next couple of months training for IMWI. Race report tomorrow.

Tony, as I said on Facebook, great work today. I was curious about the t-times though, thought maybe you had stopped for some BBQ or something . Seriously though, way to stick to your plan and test your Ironman plan in the middle of the race. I don't think I would have had the patience to take my time,

.

I learned a hard lesson today, one that I should have already known. A 9 mile run in June is not the same 9 mile run in March! I had completed this run multiple times throughout the spring with no trouble, and no water stops!m today not so much, I knew around mile 5 I was in trouble but at that point it was further to turn around than it was to push forward. I never reached the point of full on dehydration but definitely had cotton mouth and my lips became chapped. Once home i checked my weight and found that i had dropped almost 7lbs, yikes! I either need to drive the course and drop some water bottles strategically her find something I could carry with me!

I did manage to recover later in the day and get a short bike ride easy spin with minimal effort!

Matt if they were serving BBQ I'd have hated to see my transition times. I had to laugh at your post though in regards to running in March vs. June. I know it's no laughing matter though. Holy cow 7 pounds! Geez that is some serious dehydration. Glad to hear that you're alright. I always carry a bottle of water or sports drink with me. I also run loops so I always pass the house so I can stop in if I need to. If you don't run loops then either carrying or hiding water along your route is a great idea.

Derrick that's a pretty darn good ride today and a pretty good time to do it in. Yeah I hear you on the headwinds going up hills that is no fun at all especially at the end of the ride. As much as I hate the wind it is great for training, free resistance especially when you don't have the benefit of hills.

Tony,  It sounds like a brutal race.  I have another friend on facebook that is a pro athlete that posted how brutal his race was.  He was in 4th place overall when he flatted and then tried to play catch up for the rest of the bike.  Then he suffered through the run too.  He spent some time walking...........and then in the med tent.

......You weren't the only one suffering.  It sounds like everyone was in trouble out there.

Congrats on making it through the sufferfest and being that much closer to IMWI!

Matt,  I had some similar weight loss on Saturday after my long ride and short run.  My ride didn't seem to leave me dehydrated that I could notice but as I was running I was thinking a lot about wanting some water.  This is what I use to run with for hydration.  I've been using this belt for 4 marathon training programs and I like it the best.

Good training Derrick,

Tony and Jo, CONGRATS!!!!! My hat is off to ya'll just for finishing the swim!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Looking forward to reading ya'lls race reports!

Dehydration, around here, I don't even go for a 30 minute run without water it is so hot and humid. Just FYI, if you start gettind dehydrated, try taking pedialite, the stuff they give babies. This stuff in incredible.

I'm leaving town again tomorrow morning and will be gone for a few days as wife and I are going on vacation...this will definitley be a recovery week from training and when I get back, will hit it hard again.

Awsome job pushing through the difficult conditions, and great job sticking to your plan. Im with Matt, I think Id have a hard time being able to hold myself back and not over do it. Hopefully you were able to get some good knowledge of how to set up your plan for your IM. I hope you made a stop at Dinosaur BBQ AFTER the race. I may of had to make a pit stop there on the bike.

I had some decent training sessions this weekend, not nearly as exciting as Tony's recap though, I kinda felt like I was right there with him through some of it.

On Saturday I attempted to PR in the 5k distance for the first time ever. Normally I only run 5ks with a stroller and two little girls, but with the hubby home, we were able to go as a family. My 4 yr-old Madalyn ran her first ever 1 mile Fun Run (really only about a half a mile). They started at the back of the pack and she ran the whole way. Not bad for being the youngest munchkin out there.

The 5k 9:00 a.m. start was a warm one. It was about 78ºF with a 60% humidity. I caught a cramp under my right ribcage at the end of mile 1 and it definitely slowed me down through mile 2 and 3. Normally, I would have slowed my pace down and ran through it for a few miles, then eased back into a comfy pace, but a 5k proves to be too short to do this. At the end of the run, I did sprint it out to pass a 23 year old gal by :02s. I placed 25/112 OA, 5th Female OA, and 3rd in my Age Group (my age group was 26-34 yrs old), which was pretty awesome that at 34 I claimed a spot against gals younger than me.

Blog recap: http://wp.me/p32uES-8n

Splits:

Mile 1 – 7:43
Mile 2 – 8:44
Mile 3 – 8:56
.10 Mile – :41s (7:00 pace)

On Sunday, I did a 2hr + 20 min bike ride + 58 min run... ended up doing this in the gym because there ws a 70% chance of thunderstorms and at 92°F w/70% humidity, I would not have survived the training session.

I did a long swim this morning - 70 minutes. I concentrated on just letting my hands fall as they entered the water, per Dirk's earlier recommendation. Normally, my pinky and ring finger cramp around lap 40, but not today. I pushed through 50 laps and didn't have any cramping issues.

Tony, that was a brutal race. I think the heat and humidity had as much or more to do with it as the course. When I saw you T1, I wondered what happened until I saw your bike split then I figured you were just practicing your IM strategy. Very smart I think. You took what a brutal day had to offer and made the right adjustments and decisions. This is exactly the skill you're going to need for your IM. Things WILL come up, so it's just a question of what decisions and adjustments you make. I'd say that the race result was an A+ when you factor in everything which happened and how you managed it.

Jen, that's an awesome race. It's always nice to beat the "youngsters", though you're a youngster yourself. It sounds like the cramp played a big part, but now we just need to get you to slow down that first mile like we're trying to get Matt to do!

So here’s some initial thoughts on training with power after only a few rides worth:

Holy moley there’s a lot of data to digest if you’re a data geek like me.

Testing is HARD, particularly the short intervals. One and five minute max effort intervals seem so short when you say it, but wow. I’d rather do the 20 minute test. I know the short stuff isn’t as critical for us TT’ers, but I had to do the tests to get all the data to be a true power nerd.

I will be throwing away all concept of tracking speed on training rides. My GPS won’t even have speed on any of the screens from now on.

It’s impossible to keep watts down on the uphills and up on the downhills on many hills. There are hills I’m trying to stay in recovery watts, so like less than 160, and I’m in my 34-28 combination going 6 mph pushing 320 watts. So on those hills, I guess you just get up them with the minimal effort you can if it’s not hammer time.

Training rides will have a much more defined, focused, and measurable purpose. However, I don't want to remove ALL the fun of riding, so:

I also want to just ride some mid-long rides my old style and see what the numbers say.

Riding a threshold interval requires focus. I had 15 minute threshold intervals on my long ride this weekend, and if I wasn’t focused my watts would drop a ton, like 15-20%. I’m sure that’s happening all the time and in races as well. The numbers don’t lie so it’s a good reminder to keep the hammer on when it’s hammer time.

The actual numbers can be humbling. I’m not such a badazz after all!

Karl have a safe trip and I hope you and Pam enjoy your vacation.

Jen great job in the 5K getting that PR. There is always something sweet about passing people who are younger than you you are especially at the finish. I agree with Warren too, I think you might have went out to hard in that first mile however in all fairness you've not been running the shorter distances where your pacing is going to be different then the longer races. I think you'll get dialed in on that. Man you guys make me feel so slow!

Warren sounds like you going to get alot out of the power meter. I think you are going about it the right way doing the tests and getting the data. I know two of the guys I ride with swear by it.

I made it back home just after noon today from Syracuse. That was a long drive back with a sore body as it is. I'm taking today and tomorrow off and then will do some recovery work this week. I have the Oly this weekend so I want to be ready for that. After that it will be right into my peak IM training.

I know JoAnne did not check in here but she did finish yesterday as you guys are probably already aware as she posted on facebook. I traded texts with her yesterday evening and I think she said she did an 8:30 or so. I know she also said they were going to call the race while she was out on her second loop but she and the others with her just kept going during the thunderstorm and she did finish.

Looking for suggestions for a nice set of tri cycling shoes. Preferably something with a large Velcro strap that easy to get on and off. I have a really nice set of SiDi ergo 3's, great for cycling, not so great for tri's. I'm open to suggestions. I do have a wide foot if that factors in.
