D001 - 2007-11-18 6:56 PM Supposedly, some cats cause more "allergies" than others. There's supposedly some kind of dander that some produce, and others don't. I don't know a lot about it, seeing that I've always been partial to dogs. But it might be worth finding out more about it.

Hmmmm... that might explain why the longer haired cats are less of an issue.  I will definitely look into it some more.  Thanks .

Hi everybody! I've missed you all!

As for kitty cats--there isn't any reliable sci evidence to point to some breeds as hypoallergenic and others not. (That doesn't mean it isn't true--there's just no reliable way of picking a hypo-allg. kitty).

There's a company that claims to breed hypoallergenic cats, Allerga Cats I think it's called. They cost from $6000 up, and I don't know what their return policy is.

I don't know if it has to do with breeds.... What I heard was just that some individual cats produce more allergens than others.

Again, don't know if it's true....

We got onto the beet topic because.... well, I wrote this before:

I've heard that the pink color of the beets - if eaten in sufficient quantity, can actually give a pinkish coloration to light colored dogs. I was told that the Pet Food companies used to add lots of beet juice to their dog foods, then people started complaining that their pets were turning pink.

Yeah. Definitely true, and each produces a slightly different mix of allergens. Again, unfortunately, the only way to tell is to expose yourself to a lot of different cats ...

That is EXTREMELY funny about the beet juice. They must have added an azzload of it to make a difference in the dogs' fur, though. A lot of people have pink poodles, but they dye them that way (I'm sure you knew that! Nice avatar!)

Just to prime everyone for dinner--lotsa beets/juice can make your poop runny and reddish, though. Some people have gotten pretty shocked and run to the ER unnecessarily.

Ohhh... let me think for a moment what my child will not be getting for Xmas... that would be a $6K cat .

What I found over the years is that I built up tolerance to my own cats but it was/is other people's cats that caused me problems.  The best cats I ever had in terms of not reacting to them were Simba and Bagheera... she an all black Siamese mix I think (knew from her silky coat, blue eyes and her Siamese "voice" we rescued who, SURPRISE, was pregnant when we got her and he was apparently sired by a Maine Coon.  We think there mighta been a few different baby daddies involved based on the "assortment" of kittens (7 in all).  So anyone have a line on a Siamese Hussy/Maine Coon mix?

Totally understand the whole cat allergy issue.  Interesting, once I moved out west here, they don't bother me as much, just can't pet.  Great excuse for me to not take care of hubby's cat

I had to accept the cat to marry my husband, after 7 years living together, I still can't take the smell.  I buy odorized litter, have an automatic freshner by his "closet", and still know everytime my husband opens that door (two floors down)

Whatever you do, DO NOT get a MINX!!!  Didn't realize we were buying a cat when we bought our house (yes, they took the dog, left the cat - cruel, but smart people)  We learned that this particular taleless breed of cat is know for missing the litter box, and pooping where ever else he decides to.  I demanded we get rid of the cat when it came time to finish our basement.
