Averaging around 9.5 or 10.  My pool has a current because of the filters, so one direction is almost always 1/2 stroke more than the other direction.

That's fine!  You can race a 'B' race as hard as you want.  What makes it a 'B' race is that you don't really taper for it, and your plan does not have you in top shape for that race.  Pretty much by definition no race during your build period could be considered an 'A' race.

Be prepared to treat yourself VERY nicely during the week 5/3-5/9 though.  That's gonna be a tough week.  You won't be fully recovered from your HM, so make sure everything else is in place -- good sleep, impeccable nutrition, stay off your feet when possible, etc.

Ah well that's good to know...I was thinking that because it was a 'B' race I'd have to bring my 'B' game and hold back a bit.Cool

Wow!!! I've got a lot of work to do. Just to be clear, this is in a 25m pool and that's 10 total (right and left) or 10 each? I'm currently doing 9 each but at a slow pace.

Hey! I got core number 1 in, should have number two done on Friday. That would be a great start for the month of Feb.

25 yard pool, and I count every stroke with my left arm, so stroke right/stroke left = 1.

Morning everyone!  Looks like I'm going to be playing with my snow blower this weekend, so I had to rearrange my schedule a bit.  I did my long run today - 10 miles.  Will try to get in a swim and short run tomorrow before the snow hits.  I'm also going to my son's school tomorrow for the science fair assembly.  He's in 3rd grade and entered again this year.  Last year he won 3rd place in the 2nd grade.  I think this years project is better!

What's on tap for the weekend?

Tough day for me so far.  I went to the pool then abandoned ship when it just wasn't feeling good.  I can't get away from work until 6, but I've resolved to run home.  That'll be something, at least, and hopefully I'll manage to get on the trainer tonight.  I've got a good book on CD going during my trainer rides, which will add some motivation I guess.  Big problem for me right now is that I'm sleep deprived....  I have GOT to get to bed tonight at a decent hour!

Weekend:  I'm excited.  I'll be doing a long ride mostly with two other triathletes, both of whom I like.  Looks like it could be close to 70 miles, which will be a bit of a challenge, especially as both of them are fast.

Ran about 4 miles yesterday and tested out a pace for my test 5K on Friday.  Went out way to fast, should have done that in the Middle  of my run.  Oh well that is how we learn.  I'll try to get a plan together tonight for my mile pacing.  I am thinking to put in a 1st mile pace around 8:30, kick up the pace in mile two and then the last mile see what I have left and do what it takes to bring it home; not sure if that will be enough to meet my goal of 25 min. or under, but well see.  I have a pretty good ending kick so even if I am tired I can kick pretty hard at the end.

Tonight I hope to get a 1400 yd swim in after work.  Have to wait until the Club Swim Lessons are over.

I have decided to use a mixed Olympic plan out of the Book Triathlete Magazine's Essential Week-By-Week Training Guide by Matt Fitzgerald that I bought last year.  I'll use the 16 week level 5 Olympic for the Bike and Swim portion and Level 7 for the run.  For the run I am worried about decreasing my current amt and losing my gains that I have made just to follow a plan.  If it gets to be too much because the swim and run are generally on the same day I have the option to go down to level 6.

Goals for Feb...Still under consideration.

20-28 inches of snow expected here Friday and Saturday.  I'm checking Google maps... says I still live in Virginia.  I guess Virginia is the new Buffalo.  So this will kill training for the end of this week and next week I travel for work again and lose two more days.  I'm really fighting the urge to throw up my hands and eat fudge until Spring comes :-)

On more positive subjects, I swam a mile today in honor of Phil and I wish I lived near Brian so we could run together sometime... sounds like we're really similar pace.  I biked with a friend in Florida which made time go so quickly... didn't realize how long I had been out (wasn't wearing a watch).  I need to look for a training partner for... well... cross country skiing.

Y'all work out for me, k?
-Stu

P.S.  Still considering Feb goals too.  Send me what you've got on Saturday and I'll update the table for those who are participating.

Stu, I can't believe the amount of snow you are getting this winter.  I lived in DC for a year and I recall only a few dustings, with the Blue Ridge of course getting a bit more (but nothing close to 2-3 feet).  I hope you own some snowshoes.

Brian, good luck adjusting your pace.  I always run negative splits...it just takes me a mile or two to get cranking.  Keep us posted on how you do.

I churned out 2000 yards at lunch, with a set of ten, 25-yard sprints thrown on at the end.  It felt good, but it really kicked my butt.  I'm tired!

Glad to see you guys getting in some good workouts.  I had a pretty cruddy day.  I went to the pool at lunchtime and felt so awful that I just left.  I did get in a decent run home, though the pace was pushed by my desire to be warm.  It was cold out there.

I'm going to try to get in a bike tonight, but mostly I need sleep...  I was planning to run back to work tomorrow, but now see that ther is 100% chance of heavy rain and low 40s.  Hmmm.  Not sure I'm willing to 6 miles run in that.

Stu, wow.  Hang in there!

Guess I got it pretty lucky here in Oregon; just rain.  You will hear no complaining from me given all the snow I hear you talking about.  I remember living in Northern Michigan and I could walk up on the roof from the ground on a snow bank that the wind would build up over night.

Yeah, this kinda sucks.  It's on a Saturday too...all of the stuff that my boy's been looking forward to is tomorrow too...His b-ball game, a birthday part for a classmate, and something else after that...All he has to look forward to tomorrow is french toast.

Sorry to hear about all the bad weather.  We've got it here too -- in the form of cold rain, not snow.  It did force me inside this morning onto the treadmill.  I've only run on a treadmill a handful of times.  This time, after the faster part of the run, I got off to cool down by running on the indoor track.  (I can't run fast on it -- the corners are too tight.)  Wow.  What a weird feeling.  I thought running off the bike felt weird, but that's nothing compared with running on terra firma after a few miles on the treadmill.

Have a great weekend everyone.  Try to enjoy the snow as much as you can.

well for the past two weeks i have been having a lot of pain in my left knee. it is painful to normally walk let alone run. so today i have scheduled an appointment with my orthopedic doc. he is good so hopefully after next thursdays appointment i will have a better understanding of what the heck is going on in my knee. ironically it is the one anniversary of my prior surgery on my right knee-a partial knee replacement. my right knee has been doing great especially with all the running that i have been trying to do.

Sorry to hear about your knee pain.  I have an old football injury that acts up every now and then; I have no anterior crutiate (SP?) in my right knee, but has been better since losing my weight.  I hope everything turns out ok for you.

Take Care.

Well I did my test 5K .......DRUM ROLL

Results:  24:10:06  for a 7.46/mile average pace.

It was a tough one to hold on in the end, but recovered nicely.  Went out pretty fast.  I didn't negative split;  I did the complete opposite.  Ran out fast and held on unto the end.

Sorry no barffing. Yell

My fastest 5K during my Sprint tri's last season was a 27:27, but you never know if it is the exact distance with some of these events.

Anyhow it felt good.  Now that I know where I stand I have something to work toward decreasing even more.  Will have to do some speed work and more focused types of workouts.

Wohoo!  Way to go!

Different people pace 5K differently, but a lot of people think that the best way to pace it is to go out hard then try to hold on to the end.  Sounds like maybe that's the way for you.

No matter how you slice it, that's a great result, Brian.  3+ minutes off of a 5k time (even if it was during a spring tri) is huge progress.

Well, I just got back from possibly the hardest bike ride of my life.  I went with two other triathletes, one of whom is around my level, and the other of whom is much faster.  Wow.  It was all I could do to keep up for most of the ride. At one point I dropped my chain and then spent the next 15-20 minutes hammering like all get-out to catch up (which I never quite did -- they had to stop and wait for me).  I need to do more rides like that.

First off, nice run Brian. Progress is a great motivator. Keep up the good work.

I did my swim yesterday afternoon and found out they just repaired the heater. Pool was under 80, just took a cool shower before hopping in, still felt a chill. But hey it was good to experience it since I'm sure come June the lakes won't be warmed up for my first tri.

We'll I decided that I will attempt to increase my stroke speed without affecting my stroke power. I think I did OK. Time wise not a big difference compared to Mondays workout. So it's possible I may have miss counted my laps on Monday or the increase speed reduced my power. I did count strokes and it was a higher count by 1 or 2 strokes. So next week I will continue with the speed but make sure power is also better. Hopefully I'm not getting to far ahead of myself. I diffinitely feel my endurance increasing in the pool. Next week is week five and my first set is 1000m which will be the longuest non stop swim for me. Can't wait untill Monday.

Brian- nice work on the run and congrats on gutting out your pace...it probably hurt but I bet you felt pretty good afterward.

Michael...sounds like you had one hell of a ride this morning.  I feel guilty knowing that you were out there hammering while I sat around reading the paper.  I had perhaps one glass of wine too many with dinner last night and got off to a slow start.

Time to hit the pool...hopefully that will help me bounce back and rid me of this headache.  As my Irish grandfather used to say, 'you gotta pay the band if you want to dance'.

Hope everyone has good weekend.

Brian, great run.  I'm looking forward to a 5K race where hopefully I can join you in the under 25 club.  I didn't realize your 27 was in a tri... that's a great split (at least by my Clydesdale standards).

Michael, as always, an impressive workout.  I can't imagine losing 15 minutes to stronger bikers and trying like crazy to catch up with them.  Iron will.  Barfman.  Impressive.

We woke up without power.  Just came back on this afternoon.  Glad we have the woodstove cranking.  The snow changed to rain and ice over night which kept the accumulations down (only 15 inches or so), but backbreaking heavy and when it freezes tonight, it isn't going to be pretty.  Shovel cross-training for me today.  I hope the gym is open tomorrow, but probably won't be, and not sure if I'd be able to get out anyway.  3 days that were fairly clear on my schedule down the tube.

Stay warm you all.  I feel your pain Scout (and it's in the back).

Hey everyone...thanks for the positive comments on my run.  Yes it felt good and a great motivator to do better by my first tri in May.  You know how sometimes those little negative "devil on the shoulder thoughts" pop into you head when you are doing whatever and it hurts; well that happened at about mile 2.75 and I quickly pushed that aside and said "what are you thinking get moving; you've come this far and it is no time to slow down."  I really need to work on that...usually when those ideas begin to creep in during a race I see these volunteers standing and I say something nice to them to get those thoughts out of my head.  Need to begin developing and repeating those positive thoughts at those times to keep things in the right space.

Man I tell you folks on the east coast are just getting clobbered; I feel for you.  I won't tell you what kind of weather we had yesterday; you can only imagine. Smile  Hopefully it will pass soon.

You'd think they would keep the pool and Y open during these kind of days;  I guess not.
