Did you do the group ride?  The bike looks awesome.  I love those colors.  I'm psyched for you!

I did...I was cruising on the horns for the most part in the pace line...then pulled away the last 5 miles with another tri guy and opened it up a bit...very fun.

jgerbodegrant - 2010-04-25 9:54 AM So if you were me, which would you go with and why?  Both are new, never ridden.

Bontrager Aeolus 9.0 Carbon Clincher for $1700 From LBS

OR

Zipp 1080 rear tubular and 404 front tubular for $1800 WITH tires from 3rd party

Does the second option come with 2 wheels, and the first only 1?

Hey All,

I hope everyone's weekend was fun! Question on knee strengthening exercises.
I have a bum knee from a previous ski injury and after my runs it is alway achy and tender. I am an avid stretcher and do strength training twice a week, but I wanted to incorporate some exercises to strengthen my knee. Does anyone know of any good ones? Thanx!

No...sorry, both are pairs.  I also am looking at a SRAM S60/S80 set for about 1100.

Hi Robin.  You want to strengthen the muscles that support the knee.  See this link for some suggestions - there is a list of exercises about half way through.  You should be able to find "how-to" on youtube.   I'm doing several of those exercises because I've had knee problems and I know my leg muscles need a lot of work.

My left knee is the same way.  It's very specific where it is sore...and I've had an MRI looking for a small tear or something, but nothing showed up.  They told me that it was probably due to a muscle imbalance, so I do a lot of balance exercises now.  Standing on one foot with the other knee lifted, bend forward and push the lifted leg out behind you....it's tough to describe.  My hip flexors are real weak, so I'm working those also.  Another reason why my knee hurts evidently.

That's all you got for me!?  What about going with the Sram S80/S60 pair for $1000.  Am I going to see a $800 difference???  Can I blow my entire tax return on them?  Yeah....but not if I am not going to know the difference.

Nice dude.  I tried to push the pace on my road bike during our group ride Saturday and three people stayed right on my butt.  Fun none the less!

Thanks for the link - The exercies all make sense and I do most of them - except for the squats and lunges. I despise them. but I will try to incorporate them into my workouts as well.

Yeah, been there done that with the MRI. No tears just inflamation in the minuscus. The exercise you described sounds very similar to some yoga moves I do. I think part of my problem is age related. I am in the first stages of thing falling apart - yeah!!!!

Ok that was weird. All those question marks you see is from my computer translating the stuff it could into japanese. But I have been having the same issue with wheels. I am just going to rent some and see what they are like and see if I notice a difference or not. I want to get some Planet X wheels but the ones Iwant are only Tubular and I really dont want to do tubular.

So... I just looked out the window and it is snowing again - wtf!!!! Fortunately the 5k race this weekend was postponed til next Saturday b/c of 1 foot of actual snow w/ 2 foot drifts on saturday morning. So, I don't have to admit to being a wimp (that is if we don't get more snow next weekend!) Laughing

things to think about. the zipps (you said come wiht tires), are good in that they are some of the fastest wheels, the rear is basically a disk. and you have tires (roughly 200 dollar value if they are decent).

The SRAM set is nice too and i missed that in my first post.

Or, you could do what i would,

get either a disk cover (100$), or a renn disk (500 new, way less used), and a used front race wheel (HED, flashpoint, etc for 250-350)

leaves a decent amount left over.

Some day maybe I'll have somethin like that.

I bet it'll be sooner than you think.  Bikes are addicting.  Once I started dreaming about a future bike, I found myself actually making the purchase.  That being said, it was one of the best purchases I've ever made.

Earlier today I bought a brand new KK Road Machine off someone on craigslist who bought it but couldn't use it due to injury.  It came with the Spinervals DVD and a climbing block.  It retails for $320 and I paid the guy $205.  Since I want to do IMLP next summer, I figured that I need to be riding from now until then to be able to survive the hills and then perform on the run.  I've been looking at trainers for a while and wanted to invest in one of the best so I could spend hours of solitude on it in my dorm room over the winter.  This is definitely a step up from my hand-me-down Travel Trac mag trainer.  I did the 30min sprint/power session about an hour ago and I ended up soaked in sweat.  I think this is going to turn out to be a great investment.

I bought my first bike since HS in May 2009...a hybrid.  Sold that in September 2009 and bought my first road bike...and just picked up my P2 this week.  Yes, it is expensive.  But it's also something I get much more value from.

I also have drastically changed my spending habbits.  I used to just buy all kinds of useless stuff.  Like video games, digital cameras (I never take pictures), and other stuff just to "have" them.  I also used to buy nike and other name brand workout clothing...now I just buy champion or russell athletic because it's very similar quality at less than half the price.  So really, with this bike purchase, my overall spending hasn't gone up...but because I have a motivation to pinch in other areas, I can now afford what was once "unaffordable".

Besides, a new bike improves your overall health.  There's no price on that.

thats how i look at gear for this stuff.

I could be spending it on a car, or TV, or whatever.

the bike brings a lot more health, friends, and good times from it (for me at least).

David...

While we are talking race wheels...

What's your opinion on this.

I was thinking about getting a power tap.  But since it's laced into the wheel...I figure I have to put it on something I'm willing to race with.  IMO...makes no sense to train with a power tap and not race with it.

So I was looking at wheelbuilder.com, and they have options for buying power tap wheels...anything from a fairly standard training type wheel, to the zipps.  I was considering getting the DT Swiss package...which is basically an everyday wheel with the powertap pro+ package (including HRM strap and head unit, and mounting kit) for $1280.  The pro+ package alone retails for $1200.  Then also ordering a disc cover for it for racing purposes.  I would then look for a front wheel...possibly used....maybe in the $400-600 range.  So essentially, I get a powertap on a wheel I can train with and race with (with disc cover) and a racing front wheel for about $2000.

Am I overlooking something?  Are there cheaper options other than wheelbuilder?  How do you or others train and race with power meters.  Crank based power meter?

I used an SRM (Got a deal that would make most people cry), but most epople do train with the PT if they are going to use power.

That option for the rear (unless you can find a good used one and then still get a cover) sounds like the best bet.

As for a front, check into a used HED 3, you can find one for 300 ish if you look around.

Check out the classifieds here and on slowtwitch, often you an find a good PT for 600-700ish already built into a training wheel (most often the DT swiss or mavic open pro, both fit well with a cover).
