A few times a week i have organic whole wheat pasta for my after workout dinner.  Good carbs, replinish glycogen levels.  I use plain old costco ragu with some minced garlic, and I'll cook up 2 or 3 links of Turkey Italian Sausage for the sauce too.  I'll make a bunch and nibble on it for a few days.

For lowcal stuff i just do lean cuisine meals.  Most are 300 calories, and once you find a few favorites, they actually taste really good.

OK. Just registered for the Downtown Columbia Sprint tri in March--my first tri. I'm very excited, but still got a lot of work to do (along with deciding what to wear). The bike segment starts with a hill so I have to do more "hill drills." Any suggestions would be appreciated. I also got to figure out a way to get faster in the pool.

I worked out with my fitness trainer on Saturday and went swimming right afterwards to work on technique. Sunday after church I went for a short, but gruelling, 10 mile bike ride up and down hills. I'm still trying to learn the effective gear shifting on my bike. Afterwards, I did a 15 minute jog. It's too bad teaching comes in the way of training.

Have a great week,

Sue

pistuo - 2011-01-31 1:13 AM In the spirit of the "Pay it Forward" thread, I've got some stuff if anyone wants it:
I've also got a pair of used cycling shoes (shimano i think) that should fit a US size 12 1/2

I could use the cycling shoes...

I had the same trouble when I first realized I needed to get on board with fitness.  I was in a patrol car most of the day and drove by all the fast food places, needed something to drink hey coke at the gas station...  I started bringing my lunch in with me and putting water in the car as well, had to buy a large cooler that took up most of my passenger seat space but kept me from stopping at Chik-fil-a with their very nice police discount.  I also planned one night where I could enjoy wings or nachos and of course a couple of frosty beers.  That helped me the most was having the good food close to me and having the "pressure release valve" night.  A decent book that helped me on food plans is the Abs Diet, decent meal ideas and ideas for snacks etc.

Hit most of last weeks goals, missed my short run in favor of dinner with the wife.  I am weighing in at 179 so I've lost about 4 lbs since starting the trainning.

Goals for this week-

-Getting serious about stretching, I haven't been and my legs just feel real tight even when I get up in the morning

-Get in contact with the local riding groups and do a group ride this weekend

-For my long swim I am going to try for continuous swimming, curious about my endurance and what my distance will be, it's a 48 min so I know over 1 mile at least

-Continue to drop lbs

As far as forgetting where you parked...don't do that after a marathon.  I did...and walked around aimlessly for an extra mile before I found it.

Note working on keeping ankles loose and flexible, rather than actively pointing my toes, seems to have helped with the achilles pain! Wasn't completely eliminated the next day, but definitely much much less.

Also, did first outdoor bike in a long time yesterday, beautiful day out. I am really out of shape. 22 minutes in and I was hurting. Partly it's because I have a chest cold, but mostly it's because I have been taking it a bit easy on the rollers inside this winter.

Work cut out for me!

One other thing I have if anyone needs it:  a bike chain/lock in one.  It's not actually a chain, more of a thick metal wire wrapped in hard plastic (flexible).  Bought it new and the combination lock part was too big to fit through the metal loop thingy in my truck bed...

thoughts, advice but maybe just corroboration...
I was thinking of selling my bike...
thing is I was looking at the race calendar and one of the two races I had planned for June was cancelled. the other is an Oly I wasn't sure of doing. its quite expensive. and as you know I haven't been swimming.
the other two are in late august and early september.
I haven't been really training the bike either. I needed some stuff and budget is'nt very allowing these days.
as a student with no job I need--like the dwarf rings-- gold to breed gold. :P so I thought of selling and focusing on the run for a while and maybe buy another, better bike in the summer looking at those two tris mentioned.
thoughts?
there is a great running community in this town. its cheap and I am planning on 2 or 3 HM this year.

ahhhh.....

Fresh Prince- you gotta do what you gotta do... but, if this is an optional thing, i'd think it all the way through and make sure you dont do something and regret it later.

Today-
Got a nice 10 mile run in w/ a 9:10 pace.  5 min faster than last weeks run.  Weather was a perfect 60 degress, overcast, with a very very light mist at times.

I agree is it helps out to sell go for it, just be carefull you might regret it later if you can't afford another bike. The one you have is probably paid for and you won't have to come up with the money later to get a new one.

60 degrees oh I can't wait for those temps!
It's been foggy and I have been sick, I haven't worked out at all for four days. I'm heading back to the gym tomorrow mourning for some spin classes. I am feeling alot better now if it will just stay that way. A month of the same cold moving around sucked and it's HM training time!

IMO, the only reason I would sell the bike is if I knew I was giving up riding completely, or if I couldn't afford to eat.

The sell now, buy again later plan almost never works in your favor.

Got a good run with my GF in tonight. She kept me going when I may have just walked if I was running by myself. Signed up for our 5k tonight too!

I've only done one race so I don't have any really cool stories like the rest of you. I just remember pushing hard through some shin pain in my first race pretty much the whole 5k of my sprint. I can still remember that feeling finishing and then giving my GF a huge hug. (and of course the ihop after the race!). I hope to get plenty more awesome stories in future races!

Sue - I know what you mean about teaching. It has taken me a few weeks to figure out how to put in workouts after coming home from school absolutely exhausted. I think it's actually the workouts that are keeping my daytime energy up and giving me some restful sleep.

Edit: Also want to mention a very cool moment I had swimming on Saturday. I was doing the drills for effortless breathing found here: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp... During one of my 50s I had that "fish-like" experience. Everything just felt right and super easy. It only last a few seconds but it was awesome!!!

Does anyone have a topic or question they want the group to discuss.  Could be about anything.  Pace strategy, open water swimming, etc?

I have a question?  Who wants to come to central Indiana and help restore power to several thousands of customers?

It looks like we are about to get hit with 1/2" to 3/4"  of ice.  If we get that much ice we are going to have some serious problems.  I will be out of commission, so to speak, for up to a couple of weeks depending on how extensive the damages are.  I will try to take some picture to post after the restoration effort are complete.

Melanie, you can check with your dad to see if he wants to make a trip to sunny (NOT!!) Indiana and go back to work.

I've done 2 half marathons.  Both of which were in preparation for a full marathon 5 weeks later.  So I haven't specifically trained for a HM.

I ran my first in about 1:56 in 2009.  Goal was 2:00, but felt really good.  I started out at 2:00 pace the first 4-5 miles and did a major negative split.  I was doing about 35-45 mpw at that time.

In 2010 though, I started out a bit to fast and faded really bad the last 3 miles.  My goal was 1:50, and I started out pacing closer to 1:47.  So pacing mistake there...because it wasn't an A race, I decided not to push it and avoid injury.  Finished about 1:55.

If I were to do train for a half marathon now, I would probably to one of Hal Higdon's free plans.  I used them for my marathons, and after a little tweaking, worked very well.

To anyone w/ experience:

-In open water, how often do you sight (for example, every 3 strokes?) and how do you sight (for example, do you come out for a breath and then start your press as you turn your head forward?)???

-For HIM finishers, can you list what you took in (liquids and food) during and when you took it in?

-For HIM finishers, did you change clothes at any point?  Wear your top under your wetsuit?  Throw running shorts on before the run? etc.
