I am doing Be Iron Fit-competitive, but a little half heartedly right now.  I haven't got the HRM yet, a weekend project, and plan to get serious----soon!
Melinda
PS. If you know how to upload it (it's in excel) to BT let me know
Thanks

stevebradley - 2011-01-06 5:00 PM MY TRAINING PLAN ---- I follow no specific plan, largely making it up as I go along -- but with one important qualifier: In general, I follow the precepts of PERIODIZATION. There is a lot to Periodization, and I will save the details for later. But for now, just broadly....... A periodized plan will break up a triathlon year into several distinct periods: --Prep --Base --Build --Peak --Race --Transition The key ones of those are Base, Build, and Peak, and for most people there will be three phases of Base and two phases of Build, each four weeks long. (That's 20 weeks, for thsoe of you keeping score at home!) The Peak periods come before races, and are usaully 2-3 weeks long. So, for me last year with 11 races, if I follow a periodized plan to the letter, that would be 22 weeks of Peak. But, some of my eleven races were on consecutive weekends, and one day I did two races; so, my Peak periods account for much less than 22 weeks. (Plus, only once or twice have I had a Peak greater than two weeks.) Race periods are usually the week before a race, and will include the "taper" -- the gradual reduction of serious workouts so as to not exhaust all of your energy leading up to the race. Transition is the off-season; for me it was spread out according to discipline (that is, swim, bike, run) from mid-Oct to mid-Dec. How I worked it was: no bike from late Oct to late Nov; minimal running from late Oct to early Dec; no swimming between open water ending on Oct 15 and back-to-the-pool on Oct 23. Coincident with back-to-the-pool was back-to-the-gym, which I usually stop each year a few weeks into my race season -- about June 15. The only Prep for me is with strength training. In general, Prep is a time of adaptation to picking up activities (swim, bike, run, strength, stretching, cross-training) that have been dropped for a while during Transition (off-season). I generally do not need any Prep other than for strength, and I also tend to cut back a lot on Base, as mine is quite big due to all the years I have been doing this stuff. So, with my race seasons usually not beginning until May, I spend more time of training that is consistent with the Build period -- kind of by-passing parts of Base training. However, the line here is not all that clear. For those people who keep track of heart rate, at this stage of my Base/Build most of my workouts are in high Zone 2. or Zone 3. Some of my indoor bike ones will be in Z4,and parts of some swim sessions are Z4 as well; indoor rowing is always Z4. NONE of my runs are Z4 now, although virtually all of them are Z3. Perhaps I should explain PERIODIZATION in greater depth, yes??

I used the balanced 3X 16 week sprint last year then progressed to the balanced 3X Olympic.  this year i am using the "Hour and Twenty Training Plan" that I found on the USA Triathlon site.  I am really liking it.  http://www.usatriathlon.org/resources/multisport-zone/multisport-lab/the-hour-twenty-workout

I do three weeks of 3 swims ( 55 minutes, 30 minutes, and 30 minutes, 4 runs (50 minutes, 45 minutes, 15 minutes, and 15 minutes), 4 bikes (80 minutes, 60 minutes, 40 minutes an 40 minutes), then i do 2 20-25 minute BowFlex strength workouts).   For the 4th week i have a recovery week where i do 70% of everything.  I try and have one day a week when i don't work out and rest, maybe do a short swim or strength if i need to get one in.

I have a plan ...but I don't really follow it.
I basically run 3-4 times a week, bike 2 times, swim 2 times, x-train 1 day, weight lifting 1 day and as summer gets closer will increase distances.
scheduling is the big issue with family/work.

I adapted the plan I found in Triathlete magazine for Ironman, and down sized it for an Olympic this summer then set to repeat starting a few weeks into it after a rest for a half Ironman in September. The rythm and workouts prescribe suit me so far and I liked the consistency

mrsostrowski - 2011-01-06 8:22 PM I am not following a plan as of right now, but this is my "plan"

once a week spin or bike, once a week swimming and three times a week running.  I am obviously focusing on my running as I am doing a half marathon and I plan to start that training 16 weeks prior.  I will also step up my biking and swimming at that point.

A little side note: I had a great time at swim lessons tonight!  I practiced my rotary breathing and swam the entire length, while rotary breathing!

The only bad part?  Walking into the men's locker room accidentally on my way out!!  I went in and out and very quickly, so it's almost like it didn't happen right?

Did anyone see you?  If not, it didn't happen!

Not following a plan right now.  I go to a Performance Based Cycling class 2x week, run a couple of times per week, and yes, I need to start getting to the pool 2x week.  Currently just filling in with some standard pre-season workouts.  HIM training will start in early March.  The plan is swim 2x/week, bike 3x/week, and swim 2x/week.

stevebradley - 2011-01-06 7:20 AM LORI - What type of fin do you use? The best tri-swim-training ones are apparently the shorter ones, such as Zoomers. The bigger or longer ones tend to not only badly over-emphasize the kick, but don't incorporate the upper legs and hips as well as Zoomers do. Due to my neuroma history, and now a troublesome bunion, I am staying away from them. I guess I should give them a short spin at the pool soon and see how the footsies feel......but that's assuming that I really want to work at my kick! Like a bad rash or something, the thought of working harder to kick better never quite goes away!

I have some short fins.  The fins were just a little longer than zoomers but my hubby sawed them off to make them the same length as the zoomers.

My swim bag has the following:  two pairs of goggles, fins, pull buoy, swim workout sheets, Finis Tempo Trainer, Finis Freestyler Hand Paddles, Body Glide, and some goggle defogger.  So, yes lots of stuff goes to the pool with me!

What is goggle defogger?  Does it work better than licking the lens?

Tyr makes a spray and Aquasphere makes a liquid.  Most of the time I just spit on my lens too!  I mainly use the defogger on my older goggles.

Good Morning!!!
I am loosely following the "16 week sprint- run focused" but using some of the "Learn How to Swim" drills (both plans from the BT website) and when I say loosely I mean I read it in the morning but I don't always follow it when I get to the Y! Mostly I am swimming 2x a week running at least 2x a week and trying to get the biking in there when i can! I haven't been making it every morning, right now my girls are having a contest to see who can get me up the most times every night so some mornings I just can't seem to roll out of bed and if it doesn't happen first thing in the morning it usually doesn't happen!!
I hear the pitter patter of little feet... quiet time is over!!!
Happy training!!

Obviously, your kids have been talking with my kids because since Christmas, my kids have been up a lot at night needing a drink or they have to tell me they have to go potty.  I know someday I will miss the little tap on my shoulder at 3am telling me that she has to go potty but just wished they were spaced out better.  Makes for getting up at 4:30 pretty hard.

Right now i am trying to work out the kinks in my plan to fit the HM training and also keep up with the biking and swiiming. But for now i have.

Monday- Bike AM (med) - Run PM (short)
Tuesday- Swim PM
Wednesday- Bike PM (short) Run PM (med)
Thursday- Swim AM
Friday- Bike (long)
Saturday- Run AM (long) Maybe Swim for recovery Mostly..
Sunday- Yoga AM or PM

For now thats what i have i run with a group on saturdays and that is who i am training for the HM with so the runs will gradually get longer as the year goes on.
I always tri and do a recovery week every 3 weeks.
I would also like to do more strength training I guess i could fit it in with the YOGA..

stevebradley - 2011-01-06 5:18 PM MANNY - When did you clonk your head -- a couple of days ago? The I think the 15th should be okay, just as long as tere are no obvious symptoms, such as dizziness, headaches, blurry vision. Do you have a follow-up scheduled, or is was just left at 10-14 days? My childhood best friend and I worked as polar opposites with serious mishaps. He was the one who broke bones with alarming regualrity, but never clobbered his head. I never had a broken bone until I was 39 years old, but had many concussions as a kid. As I remember it, my mom clucked over me for a few days, but I pretty much resumed my devil-may-care activities immediately (except for swimming, if I had stitches holding my brain in place!). But that was just me, being a dopey kid in the 50s when the whole concept of "childproofing" everything --including a kid from himself! -- wasn't even on the cultural radar.

Steve-

The Clonk Happend on monday morning..
I honestly feel much better now i think Tuesday and wednesday I was seeing my computer screen a little fusy..
Now i feel fine, i did a 20 min walk after my swim last night and i feel fine today.

I do not have a follow up with the doc he said that if i didnt feel a lil better by this weekend to go to the ER.. i hate the ER..

I have never had a concussion before so its all new to me but i think i will be back and going for sure on the 15th and i can "resume my devil-may-care activities". LOL

MANNY -

All-righty, then!

Monday was the third, and 10 days would be the 13th and 14 days would be the 17th, and seeing as how that group run is on the 15th, that sounds like a perfect compromise. And seeing as how the world would be a better place if people could just begin to start to think about compromising, then you can prove yourself to be a Global Thinker by doing the group run!

Wasn't that an easy solution?

Based on recent history I run once every 2 months and cycle more frequently.

I'm going to try and and get back into last years schedule of
Run Mon, Wed & Fri
Cycle Tue, Thu & Sat
Swim either Tue or Thu & Sat.

as far as what I do during those days I have no idea. My runs are do what I feel like depending on interruptions at the office. If I get bored I speed up the treadmill, if I run out of gas I slow down until I catch my breath.

Cycle for me is spin class Tue & Thu. Sat can be spin or a ride outside weather permitting.

Swim is get in the pool and go until I have done 1500 yds. however long that takes. usually under 45min. I do mix in some breast stroke and I'll kick a couple lengths (25yds) on my back kick only as a break.

If I can get an extra workout in I always chose the bike outside.

The first race I have planned is just a 5k in April then a Sprint in June.

As a high school football coach I was leading my team into the locker room at half time, and since I was chewing on a couple of players I didn't look up until I had the whole team follow me into the girls locker room.  an entire girls volleyball team was already in there, fortunately it was their halftime as well so everyone was dressed.   Needless to say it was pretty tough to get my team to listen to my halftime speech.

I am still working on developing my training plan.  But it is basically a slow base building plan of swimming and running to work on my technique and then I will be following the bslsnced sprint 2x a week plan.

Steve (or anyone else),

If you have some free time do you think you could look at this like ( http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/category.asp?authorid=181411) it is the learning to swim articles.  I am having some trouble figuring out what distance race this would be prepping for.  I am trying to scale this down to something that will prep for a sprint race.  I like the ideas of haveing a training structure instead of just hopping in the pool and and swimming a distance.  Thanks VERY MUCH.

I feel your pain or should I say tiredness!! It's hard to get up that early when you have had someone coming in and "talking" to you every couple of hours or so!!! and my youngest (2yrs) has been anti-sleep the last couple of weeks so getting her to bed at her normal bed time is pretty much impossible!!!

Steve
I am still here I check in almost everyday just soaking up what is going on and what everyone else is doing, getting some great tips on things I haven't even thought of!!!

Happy training!!!

Just a quick update that I'm psyched over...Weighed in today at 166, -11 lbs since I started Tri training mid-November, and -27 lbs since I hit my all time high two years ago (193 lbs on 11/18/08)...all total I've lost 14% of my former body weight in a little over two years!

Realized today that I'm wearing a belt that at one point I needed to punch an extra hole into, but now I'm using the fourth one in (not including my addition!) Time to go shopping I guess...
