KC-I was like you and tried to avoid the meds (high cholesterol)—I have been on lipitor for just over a year and it has made a huge difference toi my levels and no effect on my physical performance.

My long run yesterday was not as planned…it took 20 minutes for me to get my head into it…the last 40 was much better.

Today I have a hard 30 minute run then a swim tonight.

Good Morning Team.

Kevin - thanks. I took my first of what will be many blood presure pills this morning with breakfast before I went out for my 10km run.

I ran my 10km this nice sunny morning - hard to beleive the sun was shining. I was able to smash my previous (and first 10 km) time by an incredible - are you ready for this - 5 seconds LOLSmile. Time 1 hr 4 seconds. Maybe this bp medication is a miracle drug Laughing. Oh well, better then 5 seconds in the other direction I guess.

Busy day ahead with a swim tonight.

Have a great day team.

KC - that sucks! But as the previous posts have said, maybe it'll make you faster! Wink  Both my parents take high blood pressure meds as well...but my brother and I seem to be ok so far.

Coach - I'll try the strength to run and let you know how it goes!

So I had my first massage in a long time with a massage therapist that is also an athlete and personal trainer.  We spoke in length about some numbness/pain I'd been having in my left during my long runs.  Well, he found that my outer calves are really weak and the inner calves are overcompensating and really tight, which makes my foot extremely underpronated! And here I was thinking I am an overpronater!  Maybe it's my superfeet insoles?!  I always get the green ones which are for high arches.  Anyways, there were a couple times I wanted to cry but he said if I start using the foam roller, stick roller, and exercises to strengthen my outer calves, I should be ok in a few weeks.

He showed me my foot and my mind quickly went to the scene in Misery where James Caan's feet get knocked in by Kathy Bates.  OUCH! Ok, so my feet don't roll in that bad but that's right where my mind went.  LOL!

Have a good night everyone!  Tomorrow I've got an easy spin on the lakefront path followed by a short transition run.  Figured if my first race is in a couple weeks, I better get started on those bricks! Surprised

My own opinion is that foam rollers should me something everyone uses.  The ligaments and muscles tighten up.  Tight means in danger of injury.  Once you get used to them, you won't do with out them. I started with the standard foam roller, then graduated to the Tripper Point Grid and then to the Rumble Roller.  I use them almost every day.

Swam yesterday really good.  Best times on short distances ever.  Then had a 90 min bike with two sets of 5 X 1 min at 135% plus.  Lovely VO2 max drills. Today, moderate distance run.  Tomorrow, swim and bike, Friday rest and Saturday a 12K run with the club and a bike workout.

Keith - thanks and I will let you know if they help with the swimming Smile

Coach - I guess it would be like asking me how many sets of clubs I have LOL.

Deb - I think your idea for Coach is great. Smile Just have him wear a T-shirt that says Deb sent me!

Anyway, thanks for the well wishes - have a good night - going to get up early and run 10 k and I am looking foward to it.

KC

KC the question is how many putters do you have?  Everytime I 3 putt I buy a new one, its never my fault!! LOL

Short ride on the trainer last night.  Still trying to get back in the swing of things which is proving harder than I thought it would.  My motivation is waning because I'm still not familiar the area and don't know where to run/ride.  I won't be able to swim till next week.  The oly tri I was shooting to do isn't happening now in June so I don't have an event that I'm training for right now.  Been a slow couple weeks as far as triathloning goes.  Anyway, I'll quit whining and go workout.

What a beautiful setting!  Not drowning is a perfect goal.   My goal in the water is to not lose too much time and not burn too much energy.  As smooth as I can be to avoid wasted effort.  After that, it's all gravy.

KC- Sorry to hear about the doctor visit.  I am sure everything will be fine.  have you thought about getting a second opinion?  I am usually the type of person who avoids medications but I guess if the evidence is right there that you have high blood pressure and there is a family history, not much you can do.  My brother in a law is a Chiropractor and he is always preaching to me that issues like that can be fixed by adjusting.  Don't really have any proof of that but might be something you can consider before taking the meds - Caleb your going to Chiropractor school aren't you?  Is that true about being able to lower blood pressure by adjustments?

Dave - That is great your wife lets you draft off of the scooter.  My wife is deathly afraid of bikes and I can barely get her to ride around the block -haha

Deb - My daughter is only 3 and I am already dreading the day she is going to prom or start dating!

Sarah - That is great that you were able to determine what was causing you pain on your long runs.  Now you know what to fix and can focus on that.  Just don't push it too much and casue an injury - take it slow.

Jen - Great video from your race.  Get that head wet at the next race-haha  Just keep working at it and you will be fine.  Like I said before you had a great race and once you get the swimming down you will improve leaps and bounds.

Caleb - i think Deb mentioned this before but check out Map My Ride to see what other people are doing in your area.

I was able to get back int he swing of things after not really biking or swimming for two weeks.  I ended up only taking 1 day off and I feel really good.  I really had two goals for the marathon 1)Go sub 4:00 and 2)Stay injury free.  this was the first marathon I trained and raced and had ZERO injuries (except for the flu )  Got a good swim in this morning and two good bike rides this week.  Gonna go run at lunch.  Hope everyone has a great day!

Also - They posted first water temp for my race in 17 days - 49 degrees - ouch.

Hey gang! I'm a little late to the game here. Been difficult to find the time. You're all right - you miss a couple of days and there are 4 new pages of posts. Nice!

Hey Tim, congrats on setting the new PR. Beating it by 11 minutes is awesome! Keep at it! I think it's pretty cool you're getting your kids involved too. I'd like to find ways for my kids to start like their old man. (kids are 1, 3, 5) They're always asking if they can come with me when I train. On a personal note, I want to thank you for the running tips! For the first time in my life, I actually ran 6 miles yesterday without stopping. 4 weeks ago, I had trouble running 1 mile without stopping 3-4 times. Thanks for your tips and advise. As simple as they may have sounded, they were significant in helping me focus and increase my endurance. So much thanks!

Jen, congrats on completing your first Sprint Tri! I'm envious and very proud of you as well. Thanks also for sharing your experience. 800m in 31 minutes for swim is excellent. Based on my training, I'd psyched to finish that distance in that time. I'm getting so winded after every 75-100 meters. I'll probably be holding onto a few kayaks and buoys, in addition to doing some backstrokes so I don't drown. How embarrassing would that be? (can you really do other strokes like breast and back during a race???) What was your experience while training for swim? Were you able to do 800m in half hour while in the pool? BTW, love the video! You whooped butt! Love that sprint at the end!

Heather, great job on the run! As someone had mentioned earlier, running seems to be more of a meditation than anything else. I think I'm beginning to see that also. So no iPod for me on runs.

Hey Mary, what kind of doc are you? Just curious.

Deb, the prom thing is giving me the willies too. My daughter is 3, and she has a ways to go before the junior prom. But man, I can't even imagine.

Iceman, I second the earplugs. I thought they were cheesey and what cool person would actually wear earplugs to swim?? Well, they're a godsend in the pool. I guess I'm never going to be cool...

Jason, good luck on Saturday. Looking at your training log, looks like you're pretty prepared. I'm sure you'll kick some butt. Please report back with a new PR!

KC, sorry to hear about the drug. As long as there's no side effect (at least shouldn't be), then train on! To be on the lower end of high BP, that's awesome! It'll take just a bit of work to get it within the normal range. You can do it!

Didn't someone say something about packing guns in their red speedos?

For those who remember, I've been shopping for a pair biking shoes for a while. I finally got them yesterday. It's a been a bit difficult to find a pair since I have wide feet. Either go up 1 size and risk my feet moving around in the shoes, or be limited by shoes that come in wide. So I waited and found a pair of the Lake MX170. These are the ones with the boa ties. They come in 1/2 sizes and come in wide. I plan on doing a ride today, so I'll you guys know how they feel and how many times I wipe out on the clips.

T-minus 10 days for my first tri. Got to train some more...

Hi Group!

I notice that when people are gone for a couple days things move pretty fast.  Don't feel like you have to catch up with everything, I don't want this to be a chore because then the fun will be gone.  If you get free time great catch up and see whats going on, but if pressed for time just drop the group a short note and say hi and how things are.   We will be here for everyone, I is much easier to comment if we know something about you but don't feel like you have to.

Now for my dilemma,  I am signed up for a HIM in 2 weeks. This is not good as I have almost no base and have not worked out in a week.  Since its a REV3 race they have an OYL going on too, so if I beg them I could probably switch to the shorter race.  The other issue is a friend of mine is doing the race (for fun no time worries for him) so I feel like I'm backing out on him to switch.  Physically I should switch but I feel bad for my buddy.  What would you guys do???

Yeah, there are actually quite a few.  I just found out about the one I was training for yesterday being moved to Sep so I haven't sat down and reworked my calendar yet.

I did check out MapMyRide.  Most the routes in my area were <4 mile loops so I'll have to do some more looking.  I might just have to be happy with the trainer during the week and then drive out somewhere on the weekend for longer rides.  Just got to work through this adjustment period.

49 is quite cold but with a wetsuit you should be just fine.  Staying healthy is half the battle leading upto any big race.  That is awesome your feeling good after your mary just be sure to ease back into hard running.

George: this is a strong NRA group, we all swim in speedos with our guns strapped in somehow!!! LOL

Great choice of shoes, just be sure to unclip anytime your slowing down until your more comfortable in cleats.  10 days to go is great, just remember that you won't gain much from now till then so don't push extra hard in hopes of being faster on race day.  Good lUCK

I would try to switch especially if you know that physically you are not up to it.  Why risk an injury or getting sick again?  Were you planning on doing the whole race step for step with him?  If not the I wouldn't worry about it at all.  You guys will still be at the same race hanging out pre and post race.  i find it hard to do a triathlon with someone - don't you lose them right off the bat in the swim?

And yes - BT has been very slow and twitchy lately.

Dave, just catching up on the posts.  No pressure to respond.  But it sure is nice to connect, encourage, and learn where everyone is with their training.  I feel like we could all go out for a beer sometime.

Being that this is my first event, I'm definitely not going for speed.  Just want to finish.

As for your dilemma, I think it depends on your buddy.  If he's new to the sport, I would probably  just stay with doing the HIM.  This is probably the only time you'll be doing a race to hang with a friend vs. focused on beating your PR.  If your buddy isn't new to the sport, then I'd say drop down to an Oly as he'd probably be focusing on beating his PR anyway.

BTW, for those of you trying to improve your swim, I found this presentation/video/article to be very eye-opening.  The video is 40:23, so watch when you have time.  Basically, it's all about stroke length, not number of strokes or strength or speed.

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=2244

I can't wait to jump in to practice this.

cheekymonkeys1 - 2011-05-03 10:04 PM Bummer about the meds, but as other have said, at least you can still train and it shouldn't have too much impact.Dave, omg 100 guns? What the heck do you do with them all??! Hhhmmm Actually.........could you come and polish one outside Sophie's prom ;-)

A friends daughter went the prom last weekend.  When the boy came to the house, he walked him outside, pointed to a fresh grave (from a pet) and told him that is the place the last boy who tired to mess with his daughter went!  I think he said she came home early.  Might be worth a shot!

So funny story I thought I would share.  An old friend from college was running the same marathon as me last week and we had Facebooked each other about trying to meet up.  The way things ended up we just never got a chance.  She texted me after and said she was looking for me but no luck.  She finished 4:14 I finished 4:15 but these were chip times so I assumed we were close but actual times we probably a few minutes off. well...  They released the photos yesterday and they also had video at the finish line.  Well after looking I realized our clock times were less than 20 seconds off and when I looked at her video as she is crossing the line I am turning the corner stumbling in right behind her.  We finished 7 places from each other and didn't even see each other.  I figure she passed me on the entrance to the stadium and probably almost knocked me over - haha.

Hey everyone.  My training is going OK.  Working on increases my base in the run to a 5k min. and getting my bike legs faster.  Haven't been in the pool for awhile but that is another issue for later.  Have a great week.
