Sorry I've been MIA this moring -- trying to get a brief out. Masters is tricky. A good masters program can help a lot for 2 reasons: (1) a good coach can help you with form issues; and (2) any program that gets you into the water and swimming more yards is going to help make you faster. The problem is programs can vary greatly. Some are just workouts written on a white board that everyone folows, others involve coaching, drills and feedback that can be really valuable. It really depends on what kind of program you're talking about. My take is that if it gets you to swim more, its a good thing. I would agree. I'm not a strong swimmer, and I would always rather run or bike, so getting in the water was a struggle for me. I committed to masters last year and went 2 to 3 times a week. It helped me tremendously. The coach helped initially with some form modification, and then really just kind of pushed me to push myself. He was very low key and didn't really monitor the intervals everyone was doing, but I'd get the occasional "so, are you just swimming smooth today", which was a subtle way of telling me to push it more. I think the combo of that and the fact that I was swimming a lot helped. Give it a try and see how you like it. |

I raced AG last year no matter what. I certainly don't want to club baby seals, but with the two nagging issues-I am not sure what I will do. I will know when I hit packet pick-up I guess and go with what my heart feels like doing. Hate the thought of getting on the scale though.Ah, yes, the Athena Division. I am technically an Athena at 159 lbs, but I will not race it. My theory is you should race where you are competative. I raced Athena for a long time and got to the point where I was winning the division by 30 and 40 minutes, that's not competition, that's clubbing baby seals. At the same time, I was racing fast enough to be in the top 10% of my AG, so I made the decision to only race AG. If you're going to be competative as an Athena, I say go for it. When you get the point that you're clubbing baby seals, move on over to AG. Most races don't have a scale and if they do, its not a big public event. Hardware is cool. If you think you can place, go for it.
Best of luck. I bet you will do great. I'd make the switch. especially if you think you can compete. |

Expert 1121 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2011 Part 2 - CLOSED So, warm weather (70 degrees today) = better performance!! I had a great ride today. 41.3 miles, averaged over 18 finally (18.4), and kept the HR under 150. (149) I felt great today!! My goal by end of summer is to make it to Mystic and back via mostly Route 201. It'll be a little over 60 miles, and so scenic. Good luck to everyone racing this weekend. Off to tee ball shortly!! Jsklarz, I might have to hammer down some oreos tonight!! |

Had a good hard 20 mile hill ride in the morning. After working in the garden all afternoon, topped it off with an 8 mile run with under 11 min miles. For me that is fantastic. Still worried about the hammie off the bike, but I am a little less worried about finishing next weekends tri now after yesterday.
That is awesome!!! You are going to do great next week! |

I'm excited! My kids are doing the kids' dash tomorrow. That ought to be super cute. I won't be on much this weekend because of all the activities (plus I have family in town). Good luck to all the racers! Enjoy the weekend, all!

Master 2151 Johns Creek, Georgia | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2011 Part 2 - CLOSED Had another really great run today. Love this zone training. Ran 12 miles and felt really good. I'm feeling much better about next weeks race. I came hope to a gift from my husband. It's our anniversary today (23 wonderful years) and he got me a Kindle. I feel kind of like a heel, didn't get him anything. We usually don't do gifts, or get something for both of us for the house. He always does stuff like this, I should know better by now. So anyway, I'm pretty excited about my new Kindle, I've been wanting one but didn't really want to spend the money. Now I don't have to, because he did! Ha! He's the best! Hope everyone is having a great day. |

Nope. If the Olympic is a "focus" race you'll just want to make sure you keep training through the sprint. |

Everything felt really good throughout (I asked Shaun if he wanted to do another 40 on the bike and he almost hurt me). Took it easy terrain wise this weekend because my glute muscle has be achy but we'll head back to the Rev 3 course next weekend for some more serious climbing. |

Cool! Let's see...roadrunners, cows, lizards, gang members, an elephant (one path goes behind the zoo and sometimes there's an elephant or two out there). |

Hope everyone is having a great day. Congrats. I got a kindle last winter, and love it. I have read so much more on the kindle than ever before. I find it addicting. You can adjust the text size, there is no glare, and I believe you can now share with other Kindle users. Kelly, although you don't feel the "pages" like a book, if you get the Kindle cover for it, it almost feels like holding a book.

I haven't seen anything too crazy. But those darn squirrels are the worst things to see on the road. They run out in front of you, then they can't make up their mind which way they want to go. I feel like one of these days, a squirrel is going to take me down and it won't be pretty!! |

144 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2011 Part 2 - CLOSED I did my first oly/international tri today. They haven't posted the results but I finished in 2:51 good for 4th in the 40+ clydes. I don't know where to start.. but I know I have work to do if I want to do more of these longer distances. The waves were tough on the swim and I swallowed alot of water. The run was interesting for me. The tide was coming in so I ran a little more than half barefoot and I had a blister on my toe. The worst part is that I had to go to the bathroom from mile two on in the run. I actually ran through the finish to the bathroom. Note to self no corn on the cob the night before a tri. It was a great day and great race but the high surf and the beach run made it tough. I survived! when they post the results Ii'll post them |

But my husband has a Kindle and he downloaded Pride & Prejudice for me (love that book!). I have to say I found the Kindle to be pretty cool. Master 2151 Johns Creek, Georgia | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2011 Part 2 - CLOSED What is up with squirrels? There's a joke with my husband and all my friends that if I'm out on the roads the squirrels better run and hide. I hit them in my car all the time. I don't try to, but they start to cross the road, panic, can't decide which way to go, and in the decision making, I take them out I guess. They really need to commit and GO! I saw an armadillo the other day riding, which seems odd to me. We have lots of turtles out over the spring and summer. I like to stop and safely put them on the other side of the road. My friends think I'm crazy, but I feel bad for the little guys. Except the mean hissing turtles, no more picking them up. Today I saw a flattened snake. Even dead I'm terrified of them. That's all I can think of, not very exciting. |
