Master 1736 Midcoast Maine | Subject: RE: KathyG's 2012 Awesome Mentor Group-Full up KathyG - 2012-02-23 9:09 AM What are your plans for training this weekend? How goes the nutrition challenge? Anyone contemplating any new tri related purchases? If the ankle/foot cooperates - long run on Saturday (10 miles), long bike on Sunday (60 miles). Nutrition challenge is going well, but I'm really starting to covet my daughter's toast. I know - toast! I've lost 10 lbs since Jan 3, it's coming off slowly, but hey - at least it's coming off. Five more weeks of Paleo until I regroup/evaluate. I just had to get replacement aerobar pads. I don't know why it never occurred to me that they could wear out until one of my daughters commented on the fact that I should just put a towel over them since it was already like just resting on the plain metal bar. A recent Schwaggle came up for compression socks - have any of you all used them? During a race or only after? Do you think it helps/hurts? Any thoughts? I currently have an awesome pair of compression running tights that I wear on my long runs and like how they feel, but haven't noticed a quantifiable improvement over normal running tights. Have a great weekend all. With any luck, I'll get the gumption up to swim this weekend or maybe (gasp) next week. Don't hold your breath. |

Member 49 | Subject: RE: KathyG's 2012 Awesome Mentor Group-Full up Good morning all! Today I'll do a long swim and on Sunday a long run and a short ride. I'm doing OK on the nutrition challenge...water no problem but I have to make an effort to consume 3 servings of fruit/veggies. I just purchased/received new aero pads and tri shorts. I have to return the compression socks...don't like this brand. I'll purchase the CEP compression sleeves/socks again. The first time I wore them was right before the HIM--I had a knot in the calf that wouldn't release. The knot actually released on the HIM as I was leaving the transition area with the bike. I am a believer in the compression socks now. I really like the compression sleeves...I can tell a difference after the ride--legs are not tired. My real concern will be the funky tan lines I'll get this summer from wearing them! I'll have to see what I can do about the evening the tan lines while mowing the pasture! Now it's time to go swim. Enjoy the weekend! RJ |

Master 3195 Just South of Boston | Subject: RE: KathyG's 2012 Awesome Mentor Group-Full up Just finished 2 hours on the trainer, and wow, is that not fun I missed a few workouts this week due to a number of factors, some of which were beyond my control. I really need to emphasize getting these in particularly now that I'm nearing the end of week 6, and the times/distances will only get longer from here on out. Nutrition wise, I need to step it up again. My appetite is off the charts, and I occasionally fall into the trap of thinking I can eat whatever. Not a good plan. Now off to do stuff around the house...... Have a great Saturday, everyone! Edited by Mike_D 2012-02-25 8:01 AM |

Elite 3913 far northern CA | Subject: RE: KathyG's 2012 Awesome Mentor Group-Full up Hi everyone! I went on a lovely and windy 45 mile ride yesterday. Today, I will be running 11 miles. I just found out that two of my planned early May events are on the same weekend this year. They are a local 100k/century ride and a half marathon/marathon. I was going to do both the 100k and the half marathon until I found out this news. I have chosen to do the half marathon instead of the 100k. I haven't done a half marathon since before I got pregnant. I know I'll do really, really good! I'm running sooooo much better now than 4 years ago. I should be able to blow my 1:58 half mary PR time out the window! I feel relieved that I don't have to ramp up my cycling milage beyond about 50 miles every other week now. I feel like a huge weight has been lifted. I enjoy riding my bike but it takes time away from the things I want to do around the house. In other news, I'm doing the time trial next Saturday! I'm borrowing a set of race wheels, too! I can't wait to see what happens! |

How are your friends doing that performed CPR? I can only imagine many emotions going on for them. Reminder of how precious life is. My husband is running with one of them this morning. The other one seems to be doing ok but she can be hard to read sometimes. |

Anyone contemplating any new tri related purchases? Tri related purchase? Hmmmm......if I like the race wheels, I may empty my savings account to buy myself a good set. Any suggestions on good wheels? My friends know a lot about them, too. They're trying to help me find a good used set. My friends are a group of recumbant cyclists. They do ultra distance races. One of them attempted RAAM one year. Since I have 650 wheels on my tri bike, they said we can all share wheels whenever. They are very sweet and generous. |

Veteran 213 Lake Monticello, Virginia | Subject: RE: KathyG's 2012 Awesome Mentor Group-Full up Got a 90 minute trainer ride in. Another "night ride". Really helps make the time go by. Turn on the music, set a timer (and put far out of reach), turn out the lights and RIDE! This way my mind is not focused on how long I've been in th saddle and how much time remains. Works for me. Thermometer in the workshop 34 F at the start of the ride. Have a great week everyone! |

Expert 859 Perth, Australia | Subject: RE: KathyG's 2012 Awesome Mentor Group-Full up One reason I love the spinning class I sometimes do is that they switch all the lights off except for the emergency ones, crank up the volume and it's brilliant, so I can see where you coming from on this one ;-) |

Master 3195 Just South of Boston | Subject: RE: KathyG's 2012 Awesome Mentor Group-Full up Wow, have never thought about doing a 'lights out' kind of ride. One reason may be is that my trainer is in my dungeon like basement, and there are no windows so it would be completely black. Don't know if I want to go there . As I get further into this, I see a direct correlation between run fitness & swim fitness. I'm convinced there is a direct link, and I'm sure there are a million articles out there saying as such, so I'm sure I'm breaking no new ground with this profound statement this AM. |

Expert 684 Portland, Oregon | Subject: RE: KathyG's 2012 Awesome Mentor Group-Full up Hey all, Just finished just under 35 mile ride, 2884 ft. climbing. Wow am I out of shape! French bakery for lunch stop did wonders - who knew, chocolate elcairs 100% tastier and just as effective as Gu. No tri purchases on the horizon, but i'm seriously considering buying a new road bike frame and swapping over the components from the tri bike. Or selling the tri bike and buying new weight weenie road bike set up. Triathlon is secondary this summer to massive bike riding, and my current road setup is geared for touring i.e. it weighs a ton! Hope everyone had a great weekend!

Expert 684 Portland, Oregon | Subject: RE: KathyG's 2012 Awesome Mentor Group-Full up oh ps to the compression discussion. I use zoot compression socks after long rides/runs, and cw-x running tights for long runs. They seem to reduce DOMS for me. YMMV. I also wear the socks if i'm traveling long distances where i'm sitting for long periods of time - helps the old fart in me by reducing travel stiffness. |

Master 3195 Just South of Boston | Subject: RE: KathyG's 2012 Awesome Mentor Group-Full up After the recommendations here, and reading the TT thread about 'walk breaks', I tried a 10/1 run/walk pace today for my planned 1 hour run. Aside from screwing up my watch (set it to a 10/1 HOUR interval, not minutes! d'oh!) it was an interesting experience. Felt bad about stopping the run the first couple intervals, but overall, I felt stronger running when I had to, and my pace/mile was only 15-20 seconds more than my normal straight runs. I'm going to try this again on my long run on Sunday to see how it goes at a longer distance (8 mi). |

I am fully expected to get winded after about 10 mins. I actually got altitude sickness last year in Vail. Hopefully I can get 4 good days in of training out here. I didn't make it yesterday. Travel days suck for working out. Have good day. eta - also, I joined BT 4 years ago yesterday. Boy does time fly. Edited by Boston Beginner 2012-02-28 6:27 AM |

A couple of years ago, I was in Albuquerque for 3 weeks taking care of my father. ABQ is about the same elevation as Denver. The altitude bothered me the most during run training. Swim and bike were okay - but you definitely notice the thinner air. The other thing that killed me was how dry the air was (6% humidity). Take it down a couple of notches and you should be fine. x2 on travel making training challenging. Good luck! |

Expert 859 Perth, Australia | Subject: RE: KathyG's 2012 Awesome Mentor Group-Full up Re compression - I love my tights (2XU) to wear after longs runs/bikes, I have even slept in them. Glutes, hammies, claves all seem to recover faster. Just putting them on makes me go "ahhhh". I have calf sleeves which I wore once for running when my calves were a bit achy but the tops dug in so much it got really painful so I need a bigger pair. The feeling of extra support though was great and I can see their worth psychologically even before thinking about the physiology. I've never worn the tights training, it's just too hot here to comtemplate. Even cycling in winter, my leg warmers come off the moment the sun comes up. I have recently bought compression socks (groovy blue ones with a big heart on the side) but haven't tried them out running yet - probably not until winter when I run in the dark and the worry about tan-lines fades. |
