Road Condition Update - FM 1486 still has the nasty rough chip seal (with loose gravel construction signs posted road side) on the southbound lane only from the Montgomery county line for 10 miles south.

Starting from the Richard area, around the loop and half way down 1486 is a ROUGH RIDE. Once you clear the chip seal when you approach 105 it's like riding on water. The winds were pretty nasty on Saturday but with the cooler temps they were expected. At this point, I am in favor of the heat and less winds than cooler temps and high winds. Unless you have a power meter you don't realize how much extra work you doing into the wind as your heart rate is not 100% indicative of effort as I learned on my 100 mile, 10 mile brick on Saturday.

It was the exact opposite Sunday. The winds were brutal all the way up to Richards (avg 12-14 mph). Once we turned south onto 1486, everything changed. We had a tail wind like no other the whole ride back to 105.  The chip seal is horrible in the southbound lane only, of course. I was tempted to hop over in the northbound lane that's smoothed over like no other but knew better. I was flying up to speeds of 28 mph. This is coming from the girl who averages no more than 17 mph on any given day. This just shows how Texas weather/temp/winds changes from day to day. I'll prepare for the worst, but hope for the best.

Yeah, truck said 38 when I jumped in a bit before 5am to head to masters this morning. Apparently I am going to have to break out some of the cold weather gear for my ride tomorrow.

On a completely different note, has anyone heard or seen what the new swag is for this year? The backpacks from last year were awesome, and was looking forward to seeing what was in store this year.

I asked this question last week and got the following response from Ironman:

Yes, all athletes will be getting a backpack similar (yet slightly different) from the last year's bags

Wow, that's interesting. The only tail wind we ever has on Saturday was coming down 1488 back towards the Woodlands once we turned off Jackson Rd. At that point we were smoking 25 mph without much effort. Riding West towards Anderson once we left the shop in Anderson was miserable. Those winds were more than I ever saw riding the most of Winter/Spring south of Pearland and along the Gulf in prep for 70.3 Texas.

I'm literally ready to just roll with whatever the good Lord throws at us. I've rode through it all at this point out there, including a 2 hour downpour.

Thanks!!!! Those backpacks were awesome last year

And the answer I got about the practice swim

Sara Striegel, May 03 01:20 pm (CDT):

Hi Shannon,
I just had our web team add the practice swim to the schedule, since not everyone looks at the Athlete Guide. All of the information you have is correct. Also, remember to bring your timing chip with you. For your safety, we keep track of every athlete that goes in/comes out of the water during the practice swim.
Let me know if you have further questions.
Thanks!

I don't think this has been posted yet, but these are really helpful course previews of swim, bike, and run.

I know this is not unusual while tapering (and part of the point of tapering), but amazing how a 3 mile run this morning can feel so hard even when you're trying to take it easy.  Not worried about it, just interesting.  Hope everyone is enjoying their little extra rest this week.

And how you can eat 3 bagels at a meeting and still not feel full.....so you eat 2 bananas....and then 2 cups of coffee....and then you're only a little satisified.

Haha.  I had a 1:45 run (really easy) yesterday.  It took me until mile 5 to feel normal.

First totally off day during the week (scheduled) for me since Galveston.  Feel fat and lazy.

I'm feeling tip-top after six days of being sick, maybe it was a blessing in disguise.  I was forced - forced - to stay off the road and out of the water.  First training day back was Saturday, legs felt a little heavy but other than that I was refreshed and faster.  This mornings little 6 miles was nothing but a fun run.

I think this is kind of normal. The last 2 years as I went into my taper, it was like I felt worse before I started feeling better (and last nights run SUCKED!).. sounds strange but it almost took me a week before I really started to feel the effects of the lighter workload. Just my n=1 experience.

I ended up with a nasty head cold two weeks before my HIM last October.  Shut things down for 4 days.  I remember feeling rediculously fresh when I got to race day....maybe would've been that way even if I'd tapered according to schedule, but I came away thinking it was a total blessing.  Therefore not sweating the fact that the rest of you seem to be doing a lot more volume than I'm scheduled to do this week! Smile  Just going to keep taking it nice an easy...

On a separate note....check out that forecasted weather (pay no attention to the projected wind gusts from the south)...

Hahaha.....it's changed everyday.

I've seen 89 and wind. 78 and light wind. Rain. No rain. Chance of rain. North wind, south wind.

Is checking it every hour a bit much?

Regarding the weather, I'm also checking it out. It reminds me a little of St. George last year. 10' into to swim the 40+mph winds came whipping up huge swells in the reservoir and the winds kept coming throughout the bike, then the heat hit on the run. The forecasters blew that day. I've learned to look and don't count on anything or rule anything out.

I'm going to leave my bib # on all posts from here on out, anyone else want to join. Maybe I'll put a few #'s in the memory bank and be able to give a shout out during the run.

Paddy...good to hear you're back from the crash. Continue healing!

Just hearing the opening riff to Black Sabbath's Iron Man, makes my hands sweaty and I get all light headed.

True story....happend at lunch.

I need to listen to it over and over so when it comes on before the swim, I won't go into full freak out mode.

Funny how I was so calm, cool, and collected through the majority of my training, even during the peak weeks.  Now that it's taper, I'm a total basket case worrying about getting everything done.  I need to chill out, quick!!!
