Heat index right now is currently 101. I am hoping that gets better and not worse before I get off work and head out for my run.

Yeah, the heat index is 104 here right now.  I'm hoping it gets better for my ride home.  I just hope it doesn't turn into an afternoon thunderstorm.

I wish we would have summer!  It's only 60 degrees here and cloudy.  I am hoping it warms up just a little (like to 72) before my bike/run this evening!!!  I admire all of you who have brutal heat to deal with and still manage to work out in it!!!

Heat index for Tulsa today is 110.  Ugh.  And Jorge makes fun of me for not wanting to run in it....

triOK - 2007-08-08 12:47 PM

Where is everyone?

I'm around.....August is kicking my butt--very busy around here--trying to get ready for vacation tomorrow and still do some training.  Hoping for an evening bike ride to unwind.  My next tri is Aug 19th, the Danskin, with my sister and about 4500 others!!  Yikes!  Had a great workout last night with a local tri group, which was my first group-type workout.  It was super fun...more in my log.

Question--when life is crazy busy, how do you fit workouts in?  As it is, I am usually juggling a kid or two-throw in some other commitments and the days just go by too fast.  I don't have a gym or a bike trainer so doing it at night at home is not an option (yet).  Then I start feeling terribly guilty that I haven't worked out, and I know this is counterproductive!!!!

Only one more final left!!! Wohoo...then I get a whole week off, a week of clinicals(while living with my parents, my deadbeat brother and his baby ) Then it starts again with the fall semester. So....school, that's where I've been!

And only 4 weeks until my first tri!

I've got an olympic distance race in PA on Sunday.

In regards to training, try early morning.  Plan it in your day instead of trying to fit it in.  It's hard, but if you have it written down, it might be a bit easier.

I definitely second the early morning workouts.  I managed to get 9 miles in this morning and still got to work by 8:30.

OMG you guys!  I have discovered the greatest thing ever.  If you guys don't have a foam roller, GO GET ONE NOW!!!  I have been using it after my workouts to massage my legs and back and I love it!!!!!  It helps with recovery and feels sooooooooo good!  I am getting to the point where I want to workout just so that I can go home and sit on my roller!   They are AWESOME!!!

I'm not racing, but I AM doing a charity bike ride this weekend.  For all of you that read my race story from a couple of weeks ago, remember the Harvard bike shop hottie???  I am counting on him being there!  Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Leslie,

I totally hear you about not fitting it in. I have been working my red bike off and skipping workouts. The funny thing is, when I sacrfice sleep to work out, I always feel better in the long run. My nutrition is horrible, so I NEED to be consistent or I will be 300 lbs in a matter of weeks.  Anyone out there recommed a marathon program for me for my spring race???

My nutrition needs to be much better too. I am consistant for awhile, then I fall right off the wagon. I know I'll do better when the kids start school, because I'm much more regimented when I have to stick to a schedule. I get frustrated because I'm working out so much and the scale isn't budging, but I have to be honest with myself and realize that my "calories in" are way higher than they should be. One day it will all click. (right?)

Story: I read on the "clydesdale" forum here that a guy had a pain on the bottom of his foot and wore the exact type of shoes I have. Recently I have had this pain too. I was given my shoes (Brooks Beast) because I was a bigger guy. I went to a different running store and they videotaped me on the treadmill. It turns out that I have a very neutral gait and don't need motion control shoes at all. SO, $125 later I hope my problem is solved....I got Saucony Omni shoes and they are very handsome!!!

Any dancer will tell you that the shoe really does make the difference.

Which brings up a good question to ask:

How often should we be switching out running shoes? How do you tell when you need a new pair.

You should get new shoes after about 400 miles or 6 months.  That's assuming you use the same pair all the time.  If you have 2 or more pair that you rotate through they can last longer than the 6 months.

The reason to rotate shoes is to give them a chance to 'relax' and that generally takes up to 24 hrs.  Plus it gives them a change to throughly dry and they last longer that way.
