givemashot - 2007-11-22 12:14 PM I'm still not so sure I'll be ready for a tri in May, Heather. I'm skeeered right now.

You WILL be! All you have to do is keep up your good work! promise....

Is there something specific you are scared about?

It's in June, you've got a whole extra month.  Seven whole more months.  Come on Amy... Racetri.com... we're waiting.  After a few visits with Terrilee, you'll feel like you can do anyhting.

Um...swimming in water that's not chlorinated or see through--with a whole bunch of other people...not being able to walk after the swim and bike, let alone run...not mention that I'm having difficulty walking without a limp right now...and seven months is almost as scary as six! I was just talking myself into running in the Salt Lake 5K in the spring, thinking " I can do a 5k--or I will be able to by then, it's not like it's all 3 events..."

Ok lets take this one by one!!!

1- can you practice swimming in open water before your race? Also... if you are not a strong swimmer place yourself in the water near the back or side of the pack so you arent stuck in the chaos

2- Running is something you HAVE to take slowly... first heal that limp! Keep riding as that helps with your running fitness.... then start off with walking and a tiny bit of running in there... gradually (SLOWLY) run a little more each week in that walk... remember you will NOT be the only person walking in the race if you need too....Run no more than 4 times a week to allow your body to recover

Does that help?

I used to be a strong swimmer, we'll see how I am these days as soon as I toss my behind back into a pool, lol. The problem is I panic in water that isn't a pretty blue chlorine color. (anything with living things besides humans in it). Ugh. And I'm not totally comfy even in a diving tank. (very active imagination, I guess). I'll get there, though. Thanks for the advice about the back/side of the pack. The last thing I need is to catch a faceful of open water when I'm already half panicked. Biking...not going there. Me+bike=ouch. I think that's what gave me the muscle spasms in my hamstrings last week, and that was only a stationary bike. Although, it was after I had overdone it with running/lifting the night before, so maybe I'm overthinking it. I've been walking most (today ALL) of my treadmill time. I feel like I need to do a little bit of something, and that's the least likely to exascerbate what's already happening. *sigh* Hopefully I'll be singin another tune after another week or so. *crosses fingers, knocks on wood, and takes a big swig of jaegermeister*...okay, not really, but I'd like to if I wasn't single-mommin' it right now.

Oh, I hear you on the water that isn't pretty blue chlorine.  Somehow I dig rivers over lake swims though and the river in question is the James soth of Richmond (yet I'm avoiding the Philly tri for the Schuylkill River?)

Ok that makes sense.... with the cycling.. just keep riding... ride ride ride....

Are you stretching? Have you increased your training dramatically? Your legs will protest if they are being asked to do too much too quickly! Its all about SLOW increases in time spend training!

Sounds to me like you are right on track.... but with your fears definatley practice as much OWS as you can in the leed up to the race!

And walking is good.. if you walk the race you finish and you are a triathlete!

Beth, the chronicles of nibbins are super...today was only a 6 on my suckometer scale of days at work. Could have been beter/could also have been a whole lot worse. Tomorrow is another day in the cesspool--only hope is that the people will be home watching football and parades, cooking their turkeys and not come in until after I get to go home Come on 3:00...

Let's see.... Turkey + carving knife = potentially messy situation.

But yes, once they settle down on the couch, they'll pretty much turn into potatoes.

Glad to hear it was only a "6" today.

funny, I was  thinking about the burns from getting the bird out of the oven or rotating pans of stuffing/baked yams and such around...the  GI stuff cause someone didn't cook the bird right (yuck), the overstuffed couch potato who has "indigestion" that turns out to be an acute MI...

STUPID ISP. *grumble*

I've been messing with it for 15 min now, trying to figure out why it won't load.... Now I find out that it DID load -- I just can't see it.

Hm yeah. Add all of those, too.

Oh, I forgot...Happy Thanksgiving...

Spokes, it's the phasers man, we need phasers.  I could save SOOOO much aggravation at work by waving some wand over everyone to get all the lab data in one swoop.  No IV sticks, no xrays of any type, NO PELVIC EXAMS IN THE ER (oh boy I really want a phaser!!) AND if someone pisses you off it's a weapon too!  WOO HOO..  Just program that sucker for whatever med is indicated and it automatically injects needleless system so ther's no risk of getting stuck with a dirty needle...can you tell I'm just a bit anxious for this to be reality
