Well made it the first leg of the journey.  We're in Chicago.  I'll let you guys know how I do on Sunday.

I did my first duathlon and it was hard.  3 mile run, 17 mile bike, 3 mile run.  Overall time 2:38 .  Rank 51/53.  Here's the good & bad of the day.

Weather was decent, cool, some wind and just a little bit of sprinkling.  The forecast was for increasing winds and rain but luckily it held off.

My morning & warm up went well.  Except that I forgot my inhaler.  I almost called home to have it brought down but my husband would already have left.  That's a regret because I struggled with high HR & tight chest the whole time.  It's allergy season and the orchards are still burning their trimmings so air quality wasn't very good.

As soon as I got there I realized this wasn't a race for the casual athlete.  80% of the people were very fit & skinny.  Most of the rest were doing it as a relay.  Part way through the first run I was able to look behind me and saw only a couple of people, yikes!  My goal even before I got there was to not finish last and I had an estimate of what my times would be.  So I just stuck to my own race

I set a PR for the first run, 3 miles in 32:28.  Yeah!  I even kept running on the hills.  The second run was 38 but I had to walk on the uphills.  My bum was cramping after the ride and every step hurt.

The ride was pretty average.  I've done the route before so I knew to expect the hills.  But since my lungs were not feeling very good each one was hard.  I ended up with a group of 2 or 3 others through the ride.  They were better on the downhills but I had them on the uphills, gravity & size was the factor there.

Transitions were fine.  I was almost the only one there each time.

Not sure I can say much more about it.  I'm probably gonna be a little sore tomorrow but I can deal with it.  Oh, my son got to run the last few yards with me while he was yelling "Go, Mommy, Go!"  It was very cute.

Race report & some pics here

I look forward to others' reports.

I raced to too...nothing spectacular on my end.

Great job with your duathlon.  To me....they are MUCH harder than tris.   That last run hurts.  I'd rather swim that 1st leg....

Way to gut it out! Nice job.

I was thinking the same thing yesterday especially since I'm not a good runner.

Driving wind, snow sleet and 3 inches of slush to run through to get to the finish line.  What fun we had today in Chicago.  Just over 40 mins for my time.  No where near a PR, but still I think very respectable for the conditions.  Glad to see that Katie and our fearless co-leader Mr. House got out there and ran as well.  Great Job Guys!

Congratulations Lara, that's outstanding, especially given the medical issues you had to deal with.

Katie, Scott - way to rock the shuffle!  Sorry the weather was so crappy, but this will be one of those races you remember.

Well, I'm back in HI and trying to get back into the groove of things.  As some of you know, I've been in Ohio on emergency leave and have been having a very rough couple of weeks.  To makes matters worse, my daughter is getting over being sick, I'm still sick, and my hubby is now getting sick ~ uugghh!  Anyway, I want to thank you for the inpsires and well wishes ~ they mean a lot!!

Hi everyone, hope you weekend racers are recovering.  I got an email from the coordinators of the Tri-shark (June tri) saying that water temps are expected to be in the 60s.  I guess that means wetsuit weather...

Happy Thursday!

I'm back home for a bit.  I got out for a ride today and enjoyed it.

Saw something funny though.  The road I was on goes through some fruit packing warehouses.  As I come around a corner I  notice a sign that says "fork lift crossing", no big deal.  But then I hear the musical horn the mexican lunch truck makes when it arrives and out of the warehouses pop half a dozen fork lifts speeding towards the lunch truck.  It was rather cartoonish to watch.

Hey where is everybody.  What's on tap for today. planning a long bike this afternoon.  part with the kids and dogs, part by myself at a better trianing pace.  maybe some swimmin' too.

I think I am going to look for some new shoes to run in tomorrow.  I have some really stiff soled shoes that were recommended to me by a shoe store.  I had a gait analysis done recently and they told me that I have the opposite problem from what the shoe store guy said.  Probly time to have the guys at the running shop recommend a pair to get me where my feet need to be.  Anyone else have a problem getting the right shoe for their gait/running style?

I'm here barely. Feeling very unmotivated & lazy this week. I did get a run/walk in but it hurt. I think I'm still recovering from last weekend's race. It did feel good to stretch though. I'm really good about stretching when I workout at the Y but not so much at home. With the improving weather I haven't been to the Y as much and not stretching as much. Must make that a new habit.

As for running shoes it took me a couple pairs to find the right ones. The first were awful. They were over-correcting my pronation. A couple of short runs and my hip was hurting so bad I had a limp and had to take a couple weeks off. They were also too narrow and showed me that I have a neuroma (sp?), still need to get to the podiatrist about that. I always wondered why my feet fell asleep in closed shoes.  Anyway, now I have a pair that do real well. It still hurts to run but not because of the shoes, just age & weight.

I'm not too sure how much I'll be around or how much training I'll get in next week. I'm going down to my Mom's to help her open up the house after the winter. Spring-time on mountain roads is usually muddy. I could run on the highway but it's curvy and I'm afraid drivers wouldn't see me. I'll do what I can.

Hope everyone else is doing well.

That sounds like a great day. That's great how you figured out a way to incorporate the family into training!

Shoes are a big deal for me, seems like I would settle on a shoe that worked and then they would change the model just enough that I couldn't wear it any longer.  After a nasty bout with plantar fasciitis (sp?), I'm sticking to strictly neutral shoes with custom orthotics.  So far it has worked.  Where are you going for the gait analysis?
