Bryan, my tri is Sat the 21st. Great job on your race! You are Da Man.

Yesterday I went to the reservoir where the OWS is next Saturday. Put on the wetsuit - yes it is tight Dan. When I first put it on, I felt like I couldn't breathe. The neck area especially felt very tight for me. Didnt feel restricted in shoulder movement at all. I didn't notice any real discomfort from the suit while swimming.

That's probably because I was freaking out! Oh man. I was having a hard time breathing - I had to tell myself to breathe out underwater all the time. And sighting threw my breathing off too - ended up taking in water. Ok, there were lots of boats and waves, so I'm thinking (hoping) that had a lot to do with my troubles. I kind of panicked when I would go up for air and get a big gulp of H20. Hard to relax, hr racing. I've also never swam 750 straight through, even in the pool. Arghhhh! What have I got myself into? Ok, honestly, I'm a bit worried. Need some help here. Any advice people?

I'm thinking I would like to go to the lake again, maybe early morning on Tuesday, when there won't be a bunch of waves and try it again. What do you guys think? I need something positive to happen.

Dan, I agree with Bryan...the sausage casing needs to be snug. I would check out the temps of the water before the tri. If is warm enough you can go without. I prefer to swim without a suit.
I think everyone has their own definition of warm enough... so check it out before if possible.

Leston, it is very common for people to freak the first OWS. So now that you have done it you will be OK. Get back in again before your tri. First get in the water. Allow your body to get used to the temp. Let a little water in your suit through your neck this will let your body acclimate. The water will warm to your body temp and keep you warm. If the water is cold it will casue your breathing to be more labored. Get used to the water.Once you feel used to the water begin swimming...go slow. Swim parallel to the shore before venturing out for a longer swim. On race day start at the back and over to the side. Even if you come out a minute or two after everyone else you will make it up on the bike/run. This avoids the washing machine of everyones arms and legs. Talk to yourself during the swim...say whatever helps to keep you calm.."I can do this...no wimping out...." This helps me from thinking I cant do this. Most of all stay relaxed, it helps alot when the waves are hitting you( I affectionately refer to this as high tide). The waves do throw off your breathing and you can never predict when it will happen. Pay attention to the waves before you get in the water. Breathe on the side opposite to where they are crashing. This prevents the taking on of water, or at least minimizes it. You can do it and you are prepared. Go slow...save it for the bike and run. The swim is the shortest part of the tri. (tell that to yourself when you are in the water) Hope this helps!!!!

Bryan sounds like you had a great time. WTG!!!!! I hate...HATE...snakes. I would have never gone in the water. I would have been a "did not start" not a DNF for that tri!!!!You are becoming a FOP racer. AWESOME!

Hey gang. I snuck out of the final presentation of teh day a few minutes early so I could get to teh "Cyber Cafe" before the rush and post a note.

Had a great time in the marathon relay yesterday. I was up WAY earlier than I needed to be but decided to head out to my relay spot. Took a cab driven by a fellow from Guyana who had the reggae music pumping in the cab as we tried to find the spot where I was to be, avoiding all the road closures along the way.

This is the first time I've been able to see the "behind the scenes" stuff of a big race. There were so many volunteers - people looking after water, gatorade, misting stations, sponges, music, clowns, etc. etc. Remember - thank the volunteers every chance you get because they work hard and without them we don't get to play!

I was surprised how many relay teams took part - close to 800 I found out today. There were over 1000 marathoners as well so made for a busy spot at transition. I managed to stake out a great spot early on and so I had no trouble seeing our #2 runner arriving to pass off to me as #3.

It was quite a feeling to take the timing chip and race off like a scalded dog passing people instead of being passed!

My route went through one of the nicest neighborhoods of Winnipeg and then through a lovely park. In the park there was a japanese-style drumming group which really got your heart pumping. Also a bagpiper as we exited the park.

As we were nearing the end of our leg I was beside a lady who asked me if I knew how much further to the transition. I said I thought it was about 1k but wasn't 100% sure because I was from out of town. She asked where, I responded Fredericton New Brunswick and she shrieked, "I'm originally from Nakawic" , which is a town about 25 miles fron F'ton. We laughed at the coincidence.

As mentioned yesterday, I finished with an average pace of about 5:20 per km which was very satisfying.

Today was a rest day. Tomorrow I plan to hit the pool for a swim. There isn't a pool at my hotel but there is in the one where the conference sessions are being held and I sweet-talked my way into a guest pass when I mentioned I am training for a triathlon!

Cheers for now,

Peter

Hey Dan! You are going to be fine with or without the sausage casing. *grin* I have a stocky 'torso' as well, (and it's definitely not as attractive on a woman as it is on a man *blush*), so just the thought of trying to get into a wet suit causes me claustrophobia. And I know nothing - absolutely zilch - about wetsuits. Looks like great advice from Bryan and Marianne. I do know though, that I can get acclimated to reasonably cold water once I swim in it for a hundred yards or so and work up some body heat, so trying out the lake without the wetsuit before the tri sounds like a plan. Regardless, you are going to be awesome! You're going to have a blast!

For both Dan and Leston: I had a panic attack in the water on my first tri, and holy cow, it was a POOL SWIM! And I adore swimming, go figure. For the second tri, the swim was an OWS, and I was fine. I just know it will work out fine for you guys. Marianne nails it when she says "relax". That's definitely the key. You have trained, you are ready. You are mighty sTRIving turtles and you are going to LOVE your finish lines!

Go Dan and Leston! Go, go, GO!!!

Congrats on the relay, Peter! Wtg!

Leston - Get back in the water....go NOW....I mean it....go NOW....suit up....wade out....and float on your back.  Let the wetsuit show you how buoyant you are....you will bob around like a cork.  RELAX.....RELAX some more....now just roll over on your side and swim 4-8 strokes....then back to your back....RELAX....over swim a few....on your back...RELAX...now this time you are going to laugh at yourself as you roll over onto your side to swim but do it one more time....5-10 strokes and back to your back....now roll over and swim little turtle....just like the little turtle who could.  You got it....no problem.  Mav's advice was great....don't swim ANYONE else's swim...just yours....there is no podium for swim time.....you WILL make it up on the bike and run....750 could only cost you 5-7 minutes if you dog paddle the whole thing....think about that on your swim and laugh.  If there are waves and there is water flowing into your mouth....just roll further to your back...it won't cost you more than 2 seconds if that....and it will keep your heart rate down.  All those drills and technique swims go down the drain (at least somewhat) in an open water swim...especially at the start....get to the outside/rear....or if you move to the center keep some clear water around you.  You should also "stand" in the water in your suit....you will be either buoyant enough to breathe without moving or moving very much I would think....the key again....RELAX.  Now, I personally like getting right in the middle of the pack and riding the washing machine....I think it is kinda fun to get bumped and jostled....swimming can be a contact sport....I think it is like a ride at a water park....and I didn't have to buy a ticket...

Go forth and paddle little turtle

Dan - if buoyancy is an issue for you...wear the suit....the confidence is worth the time in T1 to get out of the casing.....If all is well, go suitless.....smile....

Your finish lines await,

B

Hi Bryan! Thanks so much for asking! The only thing on the radar is my first 10K planned for the 2cd week in Oct. We have this silly financial crunch going on. *sigh* The good news is, I have a job interview coming up. I refuse to go back to teaching, (I feel that, at my age, I deserve a less stressful job) so I applied with the county to work in our local public library system. I applied and took the test 6 months ago. Mom went back to work Monday a week ago, releasing me from my obligation to taxi her around, and I hear from the county on Friday. Unreal! Coincidence? Don't believe in 'em. *ear to ear smile*

So, keep your fingers crossed for me folks! And thanks again, Bryan! You are such a sweetheart for asking.

This morning I took my boys and our inflatable kayak and went back to the lake. Mav and Bryan, your suggestions helped me a lot. I took my time warming up, getting in the water and just hanging out in it for a while. It was very calm, and that made such a difference. Like Bryan suggested, I rolled over onto my back and just floated - pretty sweet! In fact, I must have looked like I was having a good time 'cause my older boy had to take a turn with the suit!

I am feeling so much better today. I swam for 20 or 30 minutes, including rests. It was so much easier to get into a rhythm w/o the waves and all. Worked on sighting and its getting better. The only thing that I'm not too happy about is my swim mask I bought before my 1st tri. It is an Aqua Sphere Seal (I believe). Highly recommended at the swim shop for OWS. Seems like once it gets real wet, the straps don't want to stay tight. So today I ended up using my bug-eye speedos at the end. But I really like the visibility of the Seal mask, so I'm not sure what to do.

Thanks for your help here. Especially Mav and Bryan - I feel much more confident when you remind me that I just need to get through the swim, and not worry about how long it takes.

Maybe I will go to the lake again Thursday for another short, relaxed OWS session. If I need to get a different pair of goggles I will have to test them out (THE LAW, you know).

Turtle power.

My Tri is Sunday, June 22nd and the sprint starts approximately 8:30 am. I found out water temp is currently 71 degrees. Gates open at 6:00 am and it is about a 1 hour drive from my house. I plan on being there by 6:30ish.

Sticka: Nice race report and congrats on the completion of your leg! Job well done as always sir! One question: Why are you "hitting" on chicks during the race when you should be trying to outrun her instead??????? ;^) .... Mrs. FBP must be jealous!!!!

Bryan, Mav & Juanita: thanks for the swimming advice and tips. I find them interesting and helpful. It is GREAT to see Leston getting out and actually using the info BEFORE the race (it doesn't look like that wil happen with me! - I know breaking the #1 law, but I am hoping that only a 500m swim I will be able to do without a problem [I have regularly been swimming 1,000 - 1,250m in the pool for about a month now]).

Juanita, the 10k will be a very, very good accomplishment! Even with 6 months of training right now, I don't think I could complete a 10k without walking a portion. Good luck. If you are like me at all, I would suggest you try and find another event prior to that time. If I had 4 month between events, I would defintely find a reason to slack off on training! I am going to find at least one every other month if not one a month (again, this is still FUN for me!). My fingers are crossed for your job opportunity - GOOD LUCK!

Here is an update on the wetsuit: I checked online with several retail outlets and manufactures. I also called several. It has been made very clear (although politely) "wetsuits are not made for fat people like me!" In several of the online "sizing" charts it read "nothing in this size!" (for the record, I am 5'7" tall, 215lbs; 44" chest; 36" waist; 29" inseam in my legs) I don't feel fat and I am 22 pounds lighter and 2" thinner in the chest and waist than I was 2 years ago, but that doesn't seem to matter! One of the salespeople I spoke with suggest "Pro Motion Wetsuits" as they have some for people with my "problem." I went online and then called them. I have broken down and am now adding a wetsuit to my collection (I never realized how expensive this sport would get!!!). I purchased a sleeveless Men's Power Glide in Green Trim (I really wanted the red trim, but they don't have them in my size - that way the suit would have matched the colors on Leonidas!) http://www.promotionwetsuits.com/store/detail.cfm?product_id=317in XL short. They are confident this will fit properly (I sure hope so!). I also purchased the men's tri sleeves to wear in Chicago when the water is usually around 65 degrees!).

I will get the wetsuit on Thursday and I really need a place to wear it before the race (the beach by my house is usually closed 9 or 10 days a year due to high bacteria levels. I have not swam in this area in 20 years and don't plan on starting to now!).

I will also bring my snorkeling skin with me. This will provide a bit of warmth eventhough it won't provide any bouyancy! I will make the final determination on race day.

I am truly excited and can't wait to race. Here are my goals:

1. Don't Puke
2. Finish
3. 1 hour, 28 min (15 min swim - 500m; 35 min bike - 20k; 30 min run - 5k; 8 min in the two transitions).

Here is a question: How do I handle getting my bike cleats on in T1? The training film show clipping them in, running bearfeet and putting on the shoes while riding. This is too advanced for me! Shoud I:

1. Put on my shoes in the racking area and try to "run" with my bike in my clip-on shoes? or
2. Carry my shoes until I pass the mounting line, put on the shoes there and then mount?

suggestions please!

Thanks again for eveything.

Dan, IMO put the shoes on and run. I dont clip in my shoes and run in bare feet !!!! CARRYING STUFF WONT WORK...you will be fumbling and wasting time. BTW that green is a super fast color...you should be gliding through the water. Dont set a time goal...JUST HAVE FUN FUN FUN!!!!!! Best of Luck to you...you have worked really hard . You will be very suprised to see how many people at the event are your size ( so the @#** with the sales people)

Leston so glad you had a good swim. If it helps , I having been swimming with a woman who is training for Ironman Lake Placcid which is next month. Today we did almost a 2 mile OWS and she is having anxiety in the water. It happens. Sometimes she just floats around until she feels better. I carry my orange noodle on a rope around my chest as a security blanket. I feel no anxiety as long as I have my noodle. On race days I dont need it because there are so many people. DO what ever works. Best of all have fun

I'm so excited for you guys!!!!!!

OK, let's knock out some of these.  Lose the time goal.  No big deal.  You can have a target or a hope, just not a goal. By the way, that's a pretty tight goal....give yourself a break...it's your first triathlon for crying out loud.

Flipper - karma for the job....and dad gummit it's only 11 and a half hours to drive to Gulf Shores....I may come for the Shrimp Festival....I love me some shrimp as you know.

Leston - I wear the Seal and love it.  Are you sure you have the strap in right and clipped down - mine have some little stays on the side.  I have never had it get lose.  I might even try taking out the strap and flipping it around...maybe that makes sense....but bottom line, go with comfort and confidence.  By the way, thanks for the respect of the law....LONG LIVE THE LAW.

Dan...you cracked me up....your comment about Sticka chasing chicks reminds me of the butt honking that occuring earlier in our little group....next thing you know we'll have something on youtube.....wait maybe we do....did anyone post Sticka's transition shots....

Dan...worst case....get the wetsuit, take it to Lifetime - put it on and go get in the pool....no biggie....I have swam in mine before in the outdoor pool during the winter...yes, people looked at me like I was crazy....that's okay with me because I think I am crazy...and I also just look back at them like a deranged serial killer and they quit thinking about my wetsuit and move the women and children to the other side of the pool....it's really easy to get a lane that way....smile....and I agree with Mav....screw the salespeople...many of them have never seen the water, much less swim...and they could never hang on a triathlon.....and I have seen some HUGE wetsuits....you are not the biggest....

Dan....shoes....put them on in T1 and walk/run out of transition....be careful on concrete as they will be slick.  Again, it will take a few seconds off your time but you can make it up on the bike.

Dan....arrival time. I would be there at 6.  Yeah, we get up early in this sport.  You want to try to get a bike rack spot (if they are not assigned) as near the bike exit as possible.  That will shrink the run you have to do in your cleats.  It also lengthens the run in your running shoes to the run out as most transition areas are arranged.  The earliest arrivers will get those spots.  It also gives you a chance to get body marked, final sign in, chip on, early to the porta potty....always go before the start, then get out of transition and away from all the nervous people trying to wig everyone out in their nervousness.  Put in the ipod and just relax.  Then right before transition closes, go check on your stuff and make sure no one bumped it or moved it around.  Then get back down to the swim start area and try to zone out.  Give the family the approximate times you will be back in transition and tell them to yell at you to drink water in T1 and T2.....you mind will be mush....you will not want to think.

You will have a great time and I will be nervous enough for both of you.  Get in your race reports asap.

sTRIve, your finish line awaits,

B

Turtles:

Thank you everyone for your advice and help. I am already a bit nervous, but more excited. I feel confident in my ability to finish and not embarrase myself this weekend. I can not express how thankful I am to all of you. I know I would not feel this good about myself without you!

BTW, I got on the scale today and after not losing a pound since Hawaii, I lost 5 pounds in the last 14 days (last time I was on the scale!). I am now 210!!!! (sure hope that helps to make the wetsuit fit better!)

I will let you know my thought leading up to the race.

Leston, good luck man! I will be thinking of you on Saturday!

That said, if you want some, here's some.  Check out the Food Network - Diners, Drive-ins and Dives - the comfort food episode showing now - one of the three restaurants is the Tip Top Cafe in San Antonio, TX.  I and my wife both appear in the story....yes kids, I am famous....ROFLMAO!!!!  Honestly I have been eating at this place more than 45 years and they were filming one day when Debbie and I went in - the filmed us and while most of our interview is on a cutting room flow somewhere, we both made the show.....unbelievable....they were really hard up for interviews that day.....smile.

There you go....enjoy!

You turtles are awesome! Dan, I'm really pulling for you this weekend. I'm sure that you will do excellent. Bryan told me on my first one to take it easy and just have fun. It was great advice, helped me relax, and I really had a great time.

I am ready for Saturday. I think that the Seal mask just doesn't fit my narrow face well. So I bought another set of goggles - a TYR Nest Pro (Smoke color). Went to the lake this morning to test them out. Swam for about 15 minutes and didn't have a single leak! Decent visibility, too (not as good as the Seal, but good enough. Worked on sighting, swimming toward some buoys. Found out that I don't swim as straight as I think I am. Need a black line to follow. LOL.

Its hard to know how far you have gone in the open water, so I just wanted to see if I could swim for 15 minutes or so. I'm excited and quietly confident for Saturday now. Lots better now that I've been in the water three times. It is definitely way different swimming in the wetsuit. You stay high in the water. I've found that I hardly kick at all, because my legs are so high. Just when I'm rotated over with one leg below the other. I think that's good for me. I like the wetsuit, even though its a lot different.

Question on nutrition/hydration during the race. When I did my first sprint, I just had a bottle of GU2O on the bike, and grabbed some water at the water stations on the run. Should I take an energy gel? And if so, when would be the best time to take it? I'm thinking about 1/3 into the bike. Any suggestions? I read somewhere that said to eat a decent meal 3 hours before race time. That's what I did last time, and it seemed to be just great (except for having to wake up that early!).

Bryan, I will have to check out the Food Network show. We all knew you were a star!

Turtle power!

Leston...I think the show is on Saturday at 2 if you are home...that is central time.  The goggles sound great and sound like a good fit.  On a race over an hour and certainly over 2 hours - no matter the distance....you need some calories.  The base rule of thumb is 200-300 calories per hour but I really would emphasize that this MUST be practiced to see how your stomach works.  Somethings get rejected.  A gu would probably be fine and that is about 100 calories....the GU20 is probably about 100 as well so that should work fine.  Just be sure not to take in too many...typically too many is worse than too few.

Leston, Thanks for the continued encouragement. I too am quietly confident (that's a good description). I will be thinking about you on Saturday!

Bryan, I will do my best to watch the show! Hopefully they will put it on the web!

I got my wetsuit today! The sleeveless suit fits GREAT, my only concern is a small pocket behind my knees. I can't seem to get rid of that! The "sleeves" to wear if it is cold doesn't fit at all! The arms are way too long and it bunches up a lot. I think I will have to send it back and hope Lake Michigan warms up enough to swim in a sleeveless! If I go with a large (verses XL) the chest/stomach would be too tight!

I will get in the water tomorrow or Saturday in the wetsuit!

Train well Turtles. I will stay in-touch.

Dan - glad the suit fits well....ordering is always a challenge...I don't think I would worry much about the area behind the knee - I would butter it pretty well with body glide to prevent chafe.

Dan and Leston - our thoughts are with you guys....good karma shooting your way.

Just remember it is only a matter of "left.right.repeat" - they will tell you when to stop.

Sticka running home, Marianne?! Too funny!

The interview went well, and they called yesterday afternoon and offered me the job. Yey! Just part time at present, but it's a start. And I can keep my membership to the gym!

Dan and Leston! OMG, I can't wait to hear~!!! Go Dan, go! Go, Leston, go! Woohoo!

(I written myself a note to check out the food channel network at 2pm today. ) ONLY 11 1/2 hours, Bryan?! Yikes. *grin* But hmm, the shrimp just might be worth it.

Okay, race report coming, but 1st things 1st...Bryan, Food Network right? It's 2pm Central now and its not on. In looking on their website, it looks like the show is on tomorrow (Sunday) at 4pm Eastern. Is this it?

"Comfort Food
Guy Fieri uncovers some of America's greatest comfort food including a Baltimore cafe with a variety of French Toast, a third-generation family place in San Antonio with comfort food Texas style, a bakery-turned-restaurant in south Florida and a Huntington, W.V. cafe with home made cornbread."

Maybe the schedule is a bit different here. I hope this is it - I really want to see it!

Cache Valley Classic Triathlon 2008 Race Report.

Swim
The best thing here is that I did it. I got in the water about 15 minutes before the start time, to get used to the water and do a bit of a warm-up. That was a good idea. The swim was 750m in the reservoir. For the course, they had 2 big red buoys out in the middle and one closer in. The Olympic studs did 2 laps, Sprint 1. I started off and felt good to begin with. Especially on that first leg, I did spend some time on my back. I would swim for 2 or3 breaths, then sight. Several times gulped the water, and that would throw me off. Anyway, sighting seemed to be quite a challenge. Twice I turned over and backstroked for a minute or so. Just kept going. After turning the first buoy, we were headed east to the 2nd one, and with the sun I couldn't see it at all! Just tried to follow the crowd until I got close enough to spot it. Did better on the last leg, got pretty excited when I could see the exit and knew that I was going to make it, so I turned it up a notch and finished strong. I was feeling pretty happy, knowing the swim was over. I think I could do better next time, with the experience of that one in the bank. Sighting got better as I went on. I think my time was around 17 minutes.

T1
All in all, it went well, and quite a bit smoother than my 1st T1 three weeks ago. The biggest problem was getting my wetsuit off over the timing chip on my ankle. Don't know if anyone has suggestions for that, but it was a bit frustrating. Other than that, the suit came off well. Had my arms out and the suit down to my waist by the time I got to the bike. The best thing I did this time was to bring a small tripod stool that I use for backpacking. Nice to have something to sit on while putting on the shoes! Wow, it was great! Ran out of T1, mounted the bike on the run and let out a big "Yahooooooo". I was so happy to have that swim behind me and was ready to ride.

Bike
This was a pretty flat, loop course, just a couple of smaller hills. A bit of wind. Averaged 19mph according to the bike computer. I passed quite a few people, got passed by some as well. On the loop back, there was a lot of 90-degree turns through a farming community. And at about mile 9 there was a huge tractor ahead, going my direction. He was doing about 22mph, and I came up on him and drafted behind his HUGE tires before shooting past and waving. It was awesome! And I don't remember anything in the rules about drafting tractors being illegal! Felt pretty strong on the bike, thought it went well. Unofficial split was 39 minutes, something.

T2
This was pretty quick, thanks to the Yankz! and the stool. Shoes off, shoes on, and I remembered to take off the helmet even.

Run
The beginning of the run was the hardest part for me. I felt slow to start with. A nice long hill from about 0.5-1.0 miles really made it tough to find my running legs. But it was an out-and-back, so I just kept telling myself "left, right, repeat" ...Thanks Bryan ...knowing that when I turned around and came down that bad boy I was going to fly all the way in. And I guess that I did. My split on the run was like 20:34 or something crazy like that. I didn't think I was going that fast! That was very encouraging, especially considering how tired I was feeling to start with.

Results
Well, the unoffical results had me 56 overall, 5 in AG, and a time of 1:21:??. I will have to wait for the final results to be posted on the website.

Overall, I wish that my swim time would have been faster, but like I said, the main thing is that I finished. Yeah!

To keep things in perspective...there was a very sad thing at our Tri. Right at the end of his swim, a 50-something gentleman had a heart attack (we think - no one knows for sure). They pulled him out of the water and were doing CPR on him. My wife watched for a while but never saw him revive. I hope that he did, but I never heard for sure. I didn't see him, just heard from others. Tragic for him and his family. I will have to wait for the local paper tomorrow to find out exactly what happened. Perspective, people.

Dan, your turn buddy. Have a great time!

One more on my schedule - Oly on July 26th.

Turtle power!
