well...i did my 5K last night...times and results STILL are not posted...it was not compuscored...What i can tell u is my time was 23:42 / 7:38 a mile - i finished 46th overall but i do not know where i placed in my age group...odly the only announced 1st for anyone over 40...it still is a PB for me....but i had a bad cramp in my ribs between miles 1 and 2 and had to slow a bit to work it out...so...i know i could have done better...which leads me to the question...can i do intervals tomorrow ...11 miles on friday ...rest saturday and do another 5K on sunday AND still expect to do well?

Good job.  You are getting faster. :-)

What do you think might have led to the cramp?  Do you need to eat less, or earlier?  Or drink less or earlier before the race?

You can probably get away with that plan if you feel like you have fresh legs.  You should push the intervals to next week to make it a bit better since it's not vital that you do intervals before this race.  Plus you are already doing speedwork with these 5ks.

Have you started eying up a half marathon and your schedule is geared towards that?

to be honest it was a long day before i even go to this race..it was a really stressful day of work and then had to rush around the kids after school just to get there on time...i do think i ate too much before the race which is hard with evening races...and i still cant get over the nervous butterflies before i start...i actually thought about throwing up before i even started the race...i hope it will be better with a morning 5K...i registered for the jersey shore half marathon on oct 4th!!!! i wanted to try and find a 10K before that but there are none around here.

so what do u suggest i do tomorrow? just a mellow run? and a mellow 11 miles friday?

I would second that.  Dave are you doing it?   (ALL the cool kids are).  :-)

BTW. Dave. re: your "worst train wreck of the fall" post...aren't you and roger doing the JFK 50 in November?  Surely that has to get a few votes.  :-)

It's an Olympic distance triathlon. They usually get some big names at the race. Last year Macca was here and this year was Chrissie Wellington. It fills up quick so you have to act soon.

I'm going to run a 5K this weekend. Of course my goal will only to break 25:00.

LOL you guys are funny.  No, I am not signed up for Columbia yet.  Yes, it's a big name race, but I like to do new races (to me), it's too pricey and locks up the whole weekend with the way it is laid out.  If everyone signs up though, hmmm...

The Pinchot Park Sprint is the same day.

It's exciting to see Abbie signed up for a half marathon.  You'll do well.  If you wanted to come here for a marathon, we have the NCR Trail Marathon in late November which is nice, and I should be there volunteering.  But, I really wouldn't recommend going from your first half marathon to your first marathon in a span of 1.5 months.  You could look at Disney, or a spring marathon.  The New Jersey Marathon is where I got my marathon PR.

It is hard to run after a day's work, that could easily slow you down, but it's hard to tell in a 5k.  Some things that affect longer distances, don't seem to affect 5ks nearly as much because it's over in 25 minutes.

Yes just do mellow runs til the 5k.

Roger and I @ JFK50 - I don't see as a trainwreck.  Surely there will be a lot of suffering going on, but I see a trainwreck race as one where things fall apart so badly so quickly that you cannot help but watch. :-)  I have a circle of friends right now whose training is subpar for their goals.  Add to that, I've been really tired for 10 days now and it's hard to imagine running 26.  But, I've run really well sometimes after a spell of tiredness forcing me to rest, so it could turn around come race day.

Besides, I have no goals for JFK.  If I don't finish, I don't finish.  If I walk the last 20 miles, that is fine.  Just being out on the Appalachian Trail and C&O Canal, and experiencing an ultra, is good enough.  I really like the AT and C&O Canal in that area.

Abbie, you didn't have a sub 7 minute first mile in your 5k, did you?

Oh, and, you will suffer a lot lot more in a marathon than you ever will in an Olympic Triathlon.  You might be able to say the same about a Half Ironman as well.

I understand wanting to do new things, I feel largely the same way about marathons (although J loves PRing every year at B-more), but there is something to be said for a good challenge that's close and I can sleep in my own bed.  It is also admittedly pretty expensive, but I think they do a great job at setup and support.  I feel like I'm spoiled and will be disappointed when I do a race when I don't have a designated spot on the rack, and the course support is spotty.

I wasn't hoping you were a train wreck, I just questioned how you were worried about a marathon, but not 50 miles.  Your logic is solid though.  In the next 30 days, we may have to discuss goals for my B-more race.  I *think* I know what I want to shoot for, but don't want to set myself up for failure and excessive pain.  I was able to "PR or bonk" for a 7 minute 1/2 PR, but I'm not silly enough to have the same strategy for a full...especially one that has such a climb in the second half.

Oh, and, you will suffer a lot lot more in a marathon than you ever will in an Olympic Triathlon.  You might be able to say the same about a Half Ironman as well.

Agree 100%.  Granted I've only done 1 Olympic, 1 Half Ironman, and like 7 marathons, but I think each and every marathon, even the ones that ended well, involved more suffering than either of the tris.  I think the marathon is much harder mentally, because even if the HIM takes longer in total, it is broken up between the 3 sports, so it didn't seem to me that any one part really dragged on.  A marathon you just keep putting one foot in front of the other and you have to do that until you finish.  You don't get to look forward to switching events.  That's what makes the marathon such a great challenge though!

well...i was just thinking a marathon would be easier to do because all i would need are my sneakers and i could hop a train down there...good god...u guys want me to do an olympic tri sight unseen?

i am not nearly as nervous about the 1/2 marathon as i was about the triathlons...in the triathlon i have 3 completely different sports to be nervous about...plus equipment...and crashing! a 1/2 all i need to be nervous about is the run...once i hit that 4 miles and those endorphins kick in...i am good to go! (well that theory has worked so far for 11 miles...hope it would carry thru for 26)

Dave - I did not run a sub 7 for my first 5K mile...i think it was 7:08...are you going to do the New Jersey marathon again next year? how about becky? or steve?

Dave, with all the training you have under your belt this year I have no doubt that you'll be able to handle the JFK with little problems.

Haha, we'll see about that. :-)  Well one thing that I did feel in the disaster yesterday was that I was pretty happy with my walk/run and how it was working out, I felt like I could do it forever without dying.  I am sure JFK will be a lot like yesterday.  Just slowly knock off the miles.  I struggled from mile 10 on, so I got a lot of time with managing my resources in the same way JFK will be.

Bummer, that's the same day as Frederick, which I was planning on pacing for.

The NJ Marathon used to be a point-to-point race, which made it even more fun.  I hear it is no longer such.  We ran from Sandy Hook to Long Branch.  It was nice to have the ocean right there on the trip.

Wow 2 loops, I don't know if I like that as much. :-)  I will have to check out the course though, it's probably nice since they rerouted it.

Yes, most of the time the overall top 3 are excluded from age group awards.  It doesn't degrade what you did, as all these rankings are based on who shows up anyway.  1st place AG is 1st place AG, I would love to have that award.

Steve, are you going to do any of the ultra marathon up in Prettyboy this weekend?  Seems it would be good for your relay training.  You can do just one loop of the course.  I am planning on it.

I am also already eying up the City of Oaks Marathon in Raleigh on Nov 1st.  Ready to redeem myself, or prove that I no longer have it. :-)

OMG! - i got my bib # for the half marathon today...and it gave me butterflies! #3173

so a quick question...the paperwork says they will have water stops every 2 miles...and to make sure u stay well hydrated...do u think it is necessary to stop more then once? maybe just halfway? this half marathon is also a 2 loop course...havent decided if thats good or bad either...i suppose it could be good to know where u r on the course...

LOL, Abbie you better be getting something to drink at EVERY aid station, woman!  You can't possibly keep up with the dehydration you are putting your body into in a race.

BTW there are only 110 spots left for Columbia, not much time to decide left.

If you really decide to get out later, there is some money you can get in a refund.  I don't recall how much it is.
