Well guys, closing in on two weeks of being out of commission with some virus.  Of course it got progressively worse last week.  Thursday thru Saturday were my worst.  Perfectly coinciding with another snow storm.  So neither I nor the 8 month pregnant wife can shovel.  Thank god for great neighbors.  I couldn't move my eyes without severe headache pain.  Just ging to the basement and back had me sucking wind.  Kind of stinks seeing that I was banging out good mileage for on my runs and doing 3 hr Sunday morning combined workout sessions.  Now I feel like a 450lb chain smoker.

Good news is that the headaches are not as debilitating today and I'm feeling better.  Still weak and get tired easily.  Just very sick of that fact that I'm losing out on trainging time.  I also feel like I'm going to be starting from the beginning again.

These are the times that try our patience.  Who ever thought that you'd rather have a hand in pushing you to exhaustion instead of having a virus do it for you!

5 mile run followed by 3100m in the pool...starting to amp up a bit as we kicked off March strong...

How's everyone doing logging their time? Would love to see some Feb totals!

My snow shoveling totals almost matched the amount of time in the pool and I'm not sure 15 minutes of Yoga really count...and all of my bike was done on spin classes so....

February's totals:
Bike:6h 48m
Run:7h 38m 15s  - 49.08 Mi
Swim:5h 45m  - 15700 M
Strength:1h 50m
Basketball:40m
Core Training:1h 00m
Skiing:4h 00m
Snow Shoveling:4h 45m
Yoga:15m

Broonsy, hope you get to feeling better soon. I was down most of last week with some kind of respiratory crud myself. I know how much it sucks..

Tough deal Gogogo. I hate back injuries. If you can stretch it, it will help. If not, only time will. Keep us posted..

Tonight was a personal best for me on distance. I ran 10.1 miles tonight. My longest run ever. I was on the treadmill with the elevation at 1.0 the entire time. I took a gu gel at 45 mins and drank water the entire time. Ranged my times a little from 4.5 - 7.0 mph during the entire run but my average was 11 mins per mile. HR average around 150....

Total time was 1 hour and 51 mins. Very proud of that.... I wont be fast but its not bad for a guy who was almost 300 pounds last year. I keep telling myself that.

Only three weeks to my half marathon. You guys got three miles I can borrow?

Also, I must confess. After this long run, my nipples were almost raw.. I will do what Bwingate said and use the goo next time.... Not a good feeling.

Well I started and finished  the Desert Classic Duathlon.  First a break down of the course.  You have a pavement start to the 3.5 mile run for the first half mile then you hit the trail for the next 3 miles and pop out do a short round to get to T1 after switching to the bike for the 21 mile ride a little climb then down hill going out of the park up and down to the turn around which is on a down hill so climbing right after braking for the turn around and then back into the park up the hill and drop back into T2.  Then just the short 2.7 mile run which starts out just fine as it is down hill for the first mile almost but what goes down from the finish line has to come back up with a nice tall hill at almost the 2 mile mark up the hill then down the hill and then the last .7 up the nice little slope that brought you down to the trail.

All in the rain and the trails in the mud!! FUN!!

Hope people get over the virus thing that got them down. Been sick sucks.  Sick days are suppose to be for playing not actually been sick!

Oh and I twisted my ankle a couple of times so its a bit tender but I am going to wait for it to quit hurting(at least mostly) before running on it.  Stupid mud on the trail and ice when I got home.

The trip was fun though 12F when I left Friday, 73F when I get to Phoenix, 50ish and wet Sunday for most of the race and a balmy 31 when I got home Sunday night.

My bike time got me down just a bit I was hoping for better but looking at it realistically it was as good as I could hope for with out spending time on the road.

Haven't decided on what to do next for sure.

Hey Jon...Great report & great job!!!!! Sounds like a great time!!!

Your 1st split was great, with 27:44, for 3.5 miles!!!. Slowed down on the 2nd run, with same time for 2.7 miles. Was it tougher part of course or were you tired? Pacing is difficult. I certainly find it difficult to zero this in.

Anyway, great job!!!! You 'da man!!!

PS. Nice post-race analysis! I do this & find it very helpful.

Are you doing another Long run this weekend? With three weeks left, you probably could & then taper them quite easily & safely. I would add another 10%...11-11.5 miles. Great confidence builder for the final show!!!

Stung like heck in the shower didn't it?

10.1 miles should be great prep for the 1/2 marathon.  Does your plan call for another long run?  Either way, you've put in the training so you have the base you need.  Good job.

Yep.  I have three weeks till my event.  Two more weeks of training then a taper week I guess.  I dont have that much visability to my schedule.   I only know a week in advance.   I would guess that I will make atleast one more long run, maybe two then taper for a week.  But I have no idea.

The legs are a little woosy today but not bad.  I stretched this morning.  I should have stretched after my run yesterday but I truly think it I did, I would have broken one of my legs off.  hahaha

Thanks for the advice.  Do you think one week is enough time to taper or should I do more?  Just curious

My race is on Sunday, March 21st

yea they did.  I think they are worse today than yesterday.  Hahaha...  Glad Im not a woman..

I have a plan now for all my runs to be outside.  I think I have been running too much on the treadmill but I have not had a lot of choices.  Weather and work have put me in the gym.  Our weather is going to break this week, though it is snowing like crazy now, and we are going to be Ok.  I should be able to get outside. I have been adding a little incline to the treadmill to somewhat simulate outside running but I know its not the same.  Crazy but my outside runs have been faster than my treadmill runs...  I hear its the opposite..

I'm the same way.. I'm slower on the treadmill than outside also.    If you legs are trashed use the run walk for a couple of runs so they recover.  Jeff Galloway said mileage is mileage.  I got off the run/walk training for a while when I was getting ready for that 5K but also limited my long run to 6 miles now that I'm buildign up for the 25k April 10th I'm back to 4:1 run walk and slow pace for the long runs as Jeff Galloway suggest in his book.  I like finishing the long run feeling like I'm faster than when I started.  Great work buddy keep it up and you'll do fine on the 1/2 Marithon.

Ok, one of those sh*t days at the gym...great workout yesterday (5 mile run/3100m in pool) but stayed up too late and then paid for it. I knew I was in trouble when an ez 2 mile 'jog' was bothering me...and then spin class just took me out of the game.

My heart rate in spin is usually in the 155-165 average...today, 137. Holy dogin' it batman...

My race is on Sunday, March 21st

Personally, I think anything more than 2 week taper for half mary is too much. I usually start about a week ahead.

Given your race is 21st, here would be my plan. My, non-coach advice.

I would 11-11.5 this weekend as suggested. You only have about 1-2 miles to race dstance then. You were almost there a big confidence builder.

The next week, I would do your usual workouts. The weekend prior, I would start taper with Long run being about 4-5 miles. Then I would continue relative short workouts until Wednesday (not sure what you have been doing, so you can decide short). Then I would do nothing from Thursday until Saturday. On Saturday, I would either do nothing, or 15 minute run or 20minutes on bike. This is meant to "loosen things up", nothing more.

You should be ready to race!!!

JMHO, FWIW. Anyway, that is my usual routine & it seems to work well.
