Hi gang-- Just a short note to say I'm fine, I finished within the time frame I'd set up, and all is well. Will write up a full report later-- at the moment I'm having a case of Post-Race Stupidity Syndrome (tm Jayne Williams) and am thus not best suited for report-writing. So I shall spend the rest of today in Alex's House Of Wet Clothes And Solarcaine, then write up a real report once I have the brainpower to check the results and string words together even vaguely coherently.

Just one observation: the old slogan for the Chicago Triathlon is "Where The World Comes To Race"; after today, I suspect the new one will be "Where The World Comes To HTFU." (90 degrees and humid today...)

More soon. Hope you've all had good weekends!

Alex

Alex - glad it went well and you finished in your time frame goal I can't wait to read the details!

I did my Friday workout before leaving for out of town. Did my Saturday workout at 6am here at the fitness center at the resort, today was a scheduled day off (YIPPEE!) and tomorrow I will hit the legs at 6am...I'm having to modify a bit because the fitness center here isn't stocked with the same things as my gym in NH but, I'm making due as best I can I've stayed pretty on track with eating/drinking (only 1 glass of wine so far and had a few fries and some pepsi at the waterpark today) but other than that I have been on track

If you've seen my logs, you know one of the things I love about my early morning rides are the wildlife sightings. Today, my path was intercepted by a 2-mile wide herd of migrating caterpillars!

Note how long the shadow is... I was already 20 + miles into my ride and that's how low the sun was. Curse this @#$% insomnia!!

I stopped to take a closer look...

... and this guy demanded I yield the right-of-way:

And then there were the ones who didn't make it:

When I told my daughter about it, she insisted we go by there on the way to school (note: it is NOT on the way to school) so she could see. She ended up capturing one in my water bottle to take to school. With any luck, they'll see it cocoon and find out what it turns into!

Happy trails,

Tammy

Great photos, Tammy! Do you take a camera on your rides, or do you just use the one built into your phone? Fantastic light angles!

That's just the camera phone. So far, caterpillars are the only critters that move slow enough for me to capture!

Is everyone out there aware of Diana Nyad's upcoming attempt to swim from Cuba to Florida?  There is a website http://diananyad.com/ that describes the attempt.  I remember when she tried in the 70's and had to pull out.  Anyway, she is now 61 and giving it another go!  Pretty amazing.

White *totally* makes you go faster-- my bike's a white Cannondale! Lovely-looking bike, Tammy: hope it's now comfortably waiting for you in DC, having enjoyed a ride as plush as the elevator! Smile

*laughs* Thanks, Marsha! I think I was too tired to brag about it in more than one place... but I really am pleased with how it went: there's something about not only completing the Oly but doing it in tough conditions that's REALLY good for my mental state! Next season I'll work on getting faster, but right now I'll simply enjoy the feeling while I turn to my next big race: a half-mary at the end of October. Meantime, I'm admiring the heck out of your AMAZING workouts as you train for your competition-- go, Bodybuilding Goddess, go!! *cheers*

Hilde - I don't even know what I'd win nor do I care really...I'm just doing it as a challenge to myself to see how far I can take my body in the 12 weeks I will have trained for it. I will win the self-satisfaction of having worked as hard as I can to make the changes and the self-confidence (I HOPE!)  to stand on a stage an be judged on my hard work. I will be a novice no doubt and likely one of the least developed competitors there (most will have trained a lot longer than the 12 weeks I had to dedicate to it after my OLY) so I'm looking at comPLEting not competing I think. So...more of a self-challenge than anything! Oh, and of course bragging rights for when I kick Wilson's A$$ in our hot-body biceps contest! HE HE!

I think mental is more than 1/2 the battle and you certainly gained a HUGE mental boost by being able to do the OLY and do it in those conditions! Good luck on the 1/2 Mary...have you done that distance before? Do you have a specific time/pace goal?

LOL!

Biceps and b!tches?
Physiques and foxes?
Buff Bettys?
Defined Darlins?
Hot-bod Harlots?

I'm just getting a little stir-crazy over here! Not only am I starting my taper week, but my hectic job has been replaced by jury duty, which has been averaging 3 hours/day (not counting the 2 hour lunch break)! After being busier than a cat covering up s@#$ on a concrete floor for the last year, I suddenly have time on my hands. I have already baked a cake, a banana bread and some peach muffins, cleaned the house, cleaned out my closet, made chicken stock, brushed up my target shooting, and organized my recipes. I have disposed of my disposable income, and couldn't talk the hubby into going somewhere for the weekend. I am both restless and lethargic with so much time on my hands! What did I do with myself back when I had free time, anyway?

Argh!

I don't think you want me anywhere near you right now, Marsha. My tendency to bake when I get restless wouldn't be any help as you get ready for your competition!

Thanks-- I haven't done a half-Mary before, at least, not formally: the closest I got was a "virtual" half that Nike ran as an appendage to the Nike Women's Half in San Fransisco. The idea was to run a half-distance wherever you were according to the Nike+ timing chip, then record that on Nike's system and you got a t-shirt and nifty keychain. Thing is, I've since discovered that the Nike+ chip gets more and more inaccurate the longer you run...so I'm pretty sure i didn't actually cover the full 13.1 miles. So I'm calling this upcoming race my inaugural half-Mary: as a result, I don't have a specific time/pace goal for this first one. Finishing without injury and enjoying myself are the goals for the day-- THEN I'll get all competitive with myself, no doubt! Laughing

Oh MAN do I hear you on this one, Turtle! I was lucky and had the start of term to distract me somewhat...but not having enough to do during a taper week is crazy-making indeed. That said, I'm completely impressed with your coping techniques: I bet your freezer is stocked up for winter already! Hang in there: race day will come soon, I promise! Then you can release all that pent-up energy and kick major a$$ out on the course! Go Turtle!
