You can add it as a link on your training log!

Can you tell me how?  Do you have to be a certain level?  (gold, silver?)

To anyone w/ experience:

-In open water, how often do you sight (for example, every 3 strokes?) and how do you sight (for example, do you come out for a breath and then start your press as you turn your head forward?)???

-For HIM finishers, can you list what you took in (liquids and food) during and when you took it in?

-For HIM finishers, did you change clothes at any point?  Wear your top under your wetsuit?  Throw running shorts on before the run? etc.

For open water sighting...I normally sight every 3-4 breaths.  I breathe every other stroke...so every 6-8 strokes.

I may sight less often if there are less currents, or if the surrounding area is easy to navigate off of when I breathe.  Meaning...if I breathe to my right...and the shore is perfectly parallel to the swim course...I can use the shore to my right as a sighting guide every time I breathe.  If I get too close to the shore, I know I'm swimming to far right.  If I'm getting farther away, I know I'm going too far left.

As far as technique, I simply lift my head SLIGHTLY...just so my eyes can get out of the water, then I turn my head to the right to breathe normally.  The thing that works for me is to not look for the buoys...it's to look for land marks in the background that are much higher than the buoys.  To sight the buoys...you have to lift your head out higher out of the water...because the buoys usually only sit 4-5 feet above the surface.  I try to sight trees or buildings behind the buoys so that it's easy to see.  The higher you lift your head, the more your legs sink, thus slowing you down.  If there is nothing in the background...then I simply try and sight the other swimmers.  Just follow the general direction of the mass splashing.

For HIM clothing...I don't plan to change clothes at all.  The swim I'll be doing is not wet suit legal, so I plan to start and finish in just my tri top and shorts.  The only think I'll add is my race belt in T1 and my running hat in T2.

Done after work last night and didn't make it to gym as planned but I'll be making it up during the week, did my normal workout routine followed by a long swim took me a few minutes to get going once I got to the pool but pushed it to 2150 yards, most so far...

I do have a question I just figured out today that the rear cassette I bought for my bike is not compatable with the hub on the wheel and nothing on it is standard anymore (bike is circa 1984) so I'm in a bit of a quandry.  Do I spend the $$ that I have been trying to squirrel away for a newer bike on the parts, hub, cassete, possibly wheel or wait until I have the $$ to buy a bike and train on the exercise bike at the gym?  I have been looking at 1 to 2 year old bikes, which I had hoped to be able to purchase in late march/early April at latest possibly sooner with overtime.  Is doing majority of my training on exercise bike going to kill me in a late May tri?

What's wrong with your current bike.  Is it just the rear cassette?  What else were you considering changing out?

everything is circa 1984 with some rust, have changed out chain, did as much of an overhaul as possible also needs new pads handlesbars etc.  The rear cassette is severly corroded and didn't really want to open up bottom bracket in case in the same condition.  It is ridable, as long as cassette stays with me which I'm concerned that it wont on a longer ride and don't want to get stranded, but was also my father's old bike that never saw much time on road but he is almost 10 inches shorter than I am and the frame is on the smaller end of what I'd like to be on

If that's the case, definately do not invest much more into that bike.  With rust problems, you're better off just getting something else.  Ride it as is, just make sure you carry your cell phone with you.

The exercise bike is not ideal, but it serves it's purpose.  Being that you ride for work purposes, your handling skills are probably more than sufficient.  Find out what size bike you are and look used.  Just keep in mind that different brands have slightly different fits.

knee is a wee bit tender.  icing it right now.
weather is back in the high 20s...

I have a couple of races coming up.
a 5k this sunday, and a 10k sunday after.
the 5k is a small race, (got in for free with a friend who is sponsored) and I don't think I will PR or any such thing, but it will hurt anyways. some fast friends are doing it and I will try to hang in with them. several of them are surely going sub-20 but I doubt I have that in me right now.

10k is a bigger race, I''ll start thinking about that one on monday...

Sorry for all of you guys snowed in and iced in!  As for us lucky souls here in Kona, well, you can guess the weather.

Of course that great weather means I got to take advantage of the opportunity to train!  Another benefit of being in such a strong (make that the strongest) triathlon community on the planet is that there are often free events on the weekend to do.  This weekend is a free sprint Tri.  i'm skipping that while I still work on my swimming.  However I was lucky enough to find a swimmer and runner for the Monster Tri on the 13th.  It's a full IM on the Kona IM course.  I'm doing the bike which is 114 miles and thats by far the most I have ever done!  Going all the way from Kona to Hawi and back, I'm REALLY hoping the tradewinds are not going strong.  I'd be shocked with a 17 mph average, my goal is 16 for the day.

I have missed out on training for the past couple of days as I prepared for the storm at work and I will miss tonight too because of a swim meet.  The storm for us turned out to be very minor as far as damages.  I had one circuit locked out and another with one broken pole that just happened to have gotten found by another employee on his way to work.  The other areas I was expecting were very similar to mine, so I didn't have to go out of town to work.  Things will be back to normal soon for me but not until tomorrow probably.

Really???  That's what you call a head wind on the trainer?

I've usually got 3 fans running...all bigger than that one.  And all of them are within arm, or even elbows reach of me while riding.  LOL

I am so jealous of all you warm weather people, I have been missing my gym workouts the last two days from work. But today I was able to get off early, so I put on the water bottles and the new cateye and off I went. I was cruising along pretty good, felt like I had dressed warm enough. Then I noticed my bike was pushing really weird going up a hill. So I stopped and I had a flat So I changed the flat and headed off. After that I was freezing, I couldn't get warmed up at all. So I cut the ride short and headed home. Anything over 5 mph was bone chilling, with 3 miles to go I decided to just push through and get home fast. I averaged 20 mph for the last 3 miles,"I love the cateye" I ended up riding 17 miles with a 15 mph average. I can't wait to get into some warm weather to see what I can really do on a bike.

pistuo - 2011-02-03 1:48 PM Had a nasty head wind during my trainer ride today...

Thanks for a lunch laugh.

I ran last night (30 minutes with only 8 minutes running the rest walking, as part of couch to 5k). Good news is today I actually have normal, rather than injury pain!!!! Yippeeeahhaaahh!!!!!! Instead of the sharp achilles or back pain, I actually have glute muscle soreness from pushing myself during the running part.

First time in about a year that I've lacked injury pain, and had the kind of pain I like. reminds me of when I was 18 and used to overtrain every day and didn't give a crap about anything. Now I remember why: good pain is good. That's all I ever felt when I was 18 (until I didn't, and was screwed with shoulder tendonitis but it was a good year of overtraining before that kicked in).

Excited, maybe I'm on an upswing. Maybe I just got lucky. We'll see. No need to push it too hard I need to stay on course with my lazy increase in training.

Good to hear your run was "injury" pain free.

But yeah...stay conservative.  It's so tempting to start back up too quickly when coming off injury.  The goal is to improve over the long haul...so be patient and enjoy the small gains.

Have you ever had been bored and typed epic treadmill fail into you tube?  I had that experience the other day, we had thunderstorms one morning so I was doing my run at the gym on the treadmill, 29 minute run doing 8 minute mile pace for my last 3 minutes, when the power to the treadmill fails and I run smack into the tv that they have on the treadmill along with the other 5 people running...

Have a good weekend, six nations rugby starts today and something about a football game...
