Today was a nice 50 minute swim on my lunch hour.  Then after work, and much to Jamie's chagrin, I did an ez recovery ride on the trainer!  Good day for me.  Now if only Old Man Winter would stopping beating us up maybe I could get in a few outdoor runs this week.

YAOTD: hardest workouts were in high school when I practiced some with the local community college baseball team.  6am practices that started in the pool doing sprints on the bleachers for 30-45 minutes.  It functioned as a way for the coaches to see who was out the night before drinking.

AOTD:  traveling again this week, so Ill send pictures when I get home this weekend.

YAOTD:  High school cross country - traveled to Michigan for a week to run in the sand dunes.  10-12 miles in the sand in the woods 90% of the time.  I guess I need to push myself a little more since my toughest workout was 20 years ago!

AOTD: I work out to get out of the house!  Maybe I send a pic of my home away from home - the Y.

Nothing too glamorous here, but I do take great pride in what I refer to as megatable.  Just made it from scrap wood around the house, but it is my favorite feature of the training room.  It is a 4' high table with two shelves that gives me a ton of space for stuff at an easy reach (can even put my laptop up there).  Very handy.

This loft area is small so I had to put my treadmill downstairs which is even less glamorous.  However, I did post a picture of it in my album if you happen to prefer the old-school dungeon style workout facility.

I'll see what I can do about getting some pics up.

Just got back from a 6 mile lunch run. Is it me or does this winter really stink? I'm so sick of generating an entire load of laundry every time I go and run! Just last week I was in shorts. This is really killing me.

I seem to have lost all of my mojo for winter runs........

Scott - forget the table, check out the engineering marvel you have the TV on - a stool AND side table stacked with precision! Love it. What's that taped on your TV? A little workout plan?

My home gym is by bike on the trainer in the office - small tight space but works fine for spinning. No pictures, and I just put everything back in the garage since I'm taking my bike and trainer up to Tahoe with me. Maybe I'll snap a picture of that set up for you all - the vacation pain cave! This will be my first ski trip of the season, I'm planning on taking it easy - don't want to get a silly injury right now!!! The cross-training will be nice. I'll also visit a gym there that has a really nice pool (another photo op!).

Catch you guys later!

Yes....A very nice jury rigged balancing act on the TV table I must agree.  Just don't go near it or it may all come crashing down.  The sheet taped up there is my bike HR zones.  For the life of me I can't remember them, so I keep it up there for reference when doing intervals.

Hey, have fun in Tahoe!  I did some skiing out there at Heavenly a long time ago and couldn't get enough of it.  I need to get back there some time.  ENJOY.

22 miles in tonight with 6 PSOP intervals.  Numbers are improving so that is looking positive...

Attaching my bike spa area...

I am very proud of my wall (on left) and my door (in front of the bike) that holds my wine and cigars...there was nothing straight in that old basement...

On your sheet of HR zones please put tape over 'zone 1'. You should not train there.

You guys do have some nice setups. I need to get a pic of my dungeon basement on here.

I've been kinda casually reading some of the Armstrong/Contador/Landis merry-go-round about doping in cycling. It's really a shame that they can't clean up the sport more. One thing that really gets me is that when people who don't follow cycling criticize it so much. I wonder what would happen if the NFL, NBA, and baseball had to follow the same doping control rules that UCI mandates? Got to keep it in perspective. That's a good QOTD! What do you think would happen if UCI rules were mandated for the NFL? I think I would be getting a call up for my 150lb butt to play offensive line!

I got in a 6 mile run and a 60' bike yesterday. ~70% of the bike @ FTP. Today is masters swim in about an hour and then another lunch run if it doesn't rain.

AOTD: I'm not sure what the UCI rules are (and I'm too lazy right now to Google it). NFL players would simply find a way around being detected as using anything. That's what they do now I'm sure. It's the same way in every sport.  All those baseball players using "andro" or some other legal (at the time) supplement?  Not a chance, I suspect that was a cover for something that actually works.  I've used andro and I've used the real thing. Andro doesn't do anything but make your wallet lose weight.  Ok, off my soapbox now and I haven't used anything like that in many years and never will again.

I'm going to try and get a picture up of where my bike trainer is soon as well.

Wednesday is interval day for me for now. [email protected] + [email protected] + [email protected]  all that times 4.  It kicked my butt. In my swim lesson yesterday I learned to do the backstroke and made HUGE improvements with my flip turns...HUGE.

Hey all, sorry I've been absent for the last few days.  I've been travelling for work and have been injured (ITB rub) so I haven't been motivated to spend much time on BT....it just depresses me when I'm nursing a knee.  I really thought I was going to get thru this training plan without overdoing it but apparently not.

Nice work everybody and welcome back Cody. Sorry about the ITB. Stretch, ice and change your shoes up. I've dealt with that before.

QOTD: Yesterday I had the misfortune of forgetting my running shoes (Saucony Fastwitch) which forced my to run in lead weights (Asics 2150). It's been years since I've run in a shoe like that. Pretty much immediately my knee and foot starting hurting and I really felt the difference in the weights of these two shoes. I'm not sure how I ever ran in those types of shoes before and I'm never going to run in them again.......which leads me to a question......Do you train in heavier shoes and race in lighter shoes? And maybe a bonus question....have you ever wanted to try lighter shoes? If not, why?

I train and race in light unstructured shoes. I've told you that before. The reason I changed was b/c I was really getting banged up using the 'stability' shoes. It may seem counterintuitive to put LESS between you and the road but it may be worth a try.

AOTD:  I run in Asics 2150 now but want to get a pair of Zoots TT for the race but have been slow to pull the trigger.  Think tax refund might help the decision along.

Got a quick hour ride at the Y today and now off to Columbus for work today so 2.5 hour drive this morning and then hopefully home by midnight.  Long day so workout might be a little less tempo tomorrow.

Sorry I haven't been around much...between work deadlines & training doesn't leave much time for anything else, but I'm on track with the training, not so much the diet..lol.  I still have 20 lbs to drop so I can fit in the wetsuit properly. Surprised

This week is a run recovery week so mileage is only about 22, but the next 2 weeks are peak weeks before my 30k race on March 27th with mileage in the high 30s.

Swimming still coming along pretty good.

I have a small 3k race on Sunday.  Only reason I'm doing it is because it was my first official race last year of my new found passion of fitness, so I've decided to do it again this year and see the marked improvement in my performance.  Wrote about here: http://www.fatguysredemption.com/2011/02/23/pre-race-grimsby-3k-run-race/

Did 1300 yds in the pool this morning and have a 10k easy run later today.  Suppose to get another 10" of snow between this afternoon and tomorrow afternoon...not cool. Yell

I have run it the 2120,2130,2140and now 2150. The seem to work for me but I am thinking as well to move over to try a pair of zoots. I have had knee prowls is the past and have been told by my running store to stick with. I was orthodics and just found out you can wear then in the zoots. I will change!

AQOTD: I train & race in my lead weights which are a stability shoe - Brooks Adrenaline GTS10.  I had knee & ankle issues and had to experiment with probably half a dozen shoes before finding the Brooks.  Even though I went to several running stores for fitting, I still found the only way to get the "perfect" fit was by purchasing and using them.  Although I would like a lighter shoe, I must admit that I have some trepidation towards change now that I am so comfy.

Happy Friday to all of you!!
So this week was my rest/test week. I'm in week 4 of Base 1. I was a little skeptical going into the week, but I'm glad I trusted the week and didn't overdo it except to test. I did my swim test yesterday- very pleased, and I did my bike FTPw test this morning. I have improved by 1 watt since the last test, but when I looked at the graph, it was a much-better executed test. I am very happy with this. Sunday is my run test.

I will go for it with the QOD if no one minds!!! Do you test yourself (outside of racing) to find your training parameters??
I do. I'm using the book by Joe Friel, Your Best Triathlon, and am doing the testing that he prescribes. For the bike, he has suggested using Andrew Coggen's FTP method, which I think is good.
