Member ![]() ![]() | ![]() Catie, Your weight loss goals are totally doable, and on the right pace (no more than 1kg/week). According to my calculations, with conversions taken out to 6 decimals to limit error, you need to run a calorie deficit of 689 calories per day. With training and some substitutions, you can make your goal easily. Track your eating habits, and drop/sub/exercise away 689 calories a day for 5 weeks and you're there! Of course, dieting is this easy in theory, but not alway in practice. Many people lose a lot one week, and not much the other for several weeks. This has to do with how our body responds to stress, ie running a calorie deficit. Your body may try hard to hold on to calorie reserves (fat), but overtime it will come off as your body begins to be use to the idea of giving up calories. It may take all 8 weeks for your body to get use to running a calorie deficit, but don't let that deter you from continuing on with your goal. A healthy life is not a goal to be met, but a journey to live. Good luck on your journey. Edited by GatorRunner 2012-02-27 3:25 PM |

Can't wear my aid during the bike or run either because it isn't waterproof so the sweat can damage it. I am looking at waterproof hearing aids this time so I can wear them during training. Just not sure how 'waterproof' they actually are. So, I have 8 weeks to drop 5kg... any hints and tips to help me get there? I am going to try to write down everything I eat for the next 8 weeks, so hopefully that will help ditch any naughty habits I have food wise.
If you're wanting to loose weight Catie, then maybe S'mores are not a good idea right now |

New user ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Now I'm wondering how to get a gel in during my indoor tri in 2 weeks. Not sure we're allowed food during the spin, or is a gel considered food? If so, I guess the best time to take it would be in the middle of the bike. If not, maybe during the 5 mins. between the bike and the run?
mcgilmartin - 2012-02-26 11:31 AM mcgilmartin - 2012-02-27 9:29 AM Mariah, sounds like you needed to pop a gel during your spin! A lesson learned for next time, don't bonk on the run... and don't stand next to rattlesnake lady LOL I hit post too quickly... Jen, this is exactly what I was talking about when I said there's a time and a place for supplements. A shot of Hammer Gel halfway through the spin session and Mariah could have probably easily done 2 miles on that run, maybe more. |

I would have had time between the swim and bike transition if I would not have had a key mix-up. Otherwise, you could probably use it in the middle of the bike or in the transition between bike and run. Good luck and I look forward to reading your race report! |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() mcgilmartin - 2012-02-27 10:13 AM Christian- awesome race man! You are going to be a beast when the outdoor season starts. I meant to ask you too- are you or do you know anyone doing the Hy-Vee Tri in Des Moines? I was debating adding it to my race schedule. I love Iowa, and I've never done a race there. It was a good race, but I'm afraid I have come up injured. My left knee has been bugging me off an on lately as well as the abductor in the same leg. Yesterday I finally got my new Garmin and took it out for a spin. Made it 3 miles in to an 8 mile run and had to walk back home. I'm going to take a few days off and swim and take it easy. But to answer your question - yes, I do plan on doing Hy-Vee this year. This will be my first year. It's an awesome course and seeing the pro's in the flesh is a great experience. Des Moines is only a short 6 hour drive from Chicago. |

My recommendation on flavor- Raspberry or Hammer Montana Huckleberry LOL... seriously... the stuff is delish! |

Whenever I get injured I always resort to swimming~ that's one of the reasons why I end up with so much swimming volume. Good for you for listening to your body. Marines say that pain is weakness leaving the body, sometimes though it's your body telling you to knock it off. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Just wanted to check in to say hi to everyone. Nothing remarkable or noteworthy on this end. Missed my long run this past weekend because of family chaos and was really grumpy about it. I was absolutely tickled when my 12 hour hospital shift was canceled today and I took it as a sign from the universe that I was still supposed to get that 12-miler in. Absolutely beautiful weather in DC today---I even have a little sunburn! Ordered a new pair of Newtons after the run because my feet have really been hurting allot during recent runs and I've often heard that's a tell-tale sign that you need new shoes. I don't think the problem is the Newtons themselves---I've been running in them for over a year now and this will actually be my third pair. I am a TERRIBLE heel striker (though the Newtons have helped to resolve some of that) and also pronate so I'm going to switch from the lightweight trainer to the all-terrain trainer (http://www.newtonrunning.com/shoes/women-shoes/women-guidance-trainer/trail-trainer) in the hope that it will provide me with a little more stability. I'll also continue to wear the Super Feet inserts for extra support. Wanted to chime in about a few sports supplements that I swear by. After hitting the proverbial wall/bonking in my first half marathon around mile 9, I've been religious about gu-ing every 45 minutes for any run over 90 minutes. My old favorite flavor used to be the Gu Roctane Blueberry Pomegranate but I've been feeling burned out on it and have been alternating with the Gu Chocolate Outrage for some variety---tastes like cake icing! Both of these have caffeine which seems to help me as much as the calories. Gatorade, Powerade, and Cytomax really make my stomach cramp but I've found a product that I swear by: Nuun (www.nuun.com). You drop the tablet in your water bottle and it adds electrolytes and a hint of flavor but no sugar. They're not cheap but I can't imagine running without it. For recovery, I use Accelerade for workouts that are under ninety minutes. Anything over 90 and I use Endurox. I also use chocolate milk for some variety but have found that I actually prefer the Endurox. When I ran the Marine Corps Marathon last year, the thing that hit the spot the most was a Pop Tart that a friend had waiting for me around Mile 15. Nothing nutritionally redeeming about those but it sure hit the spot. Also really enjoyed the dixie cup of beer that a friend passed my way around mile 23. Perhaps the most ridiculous thing that has popped into my head this week is the idea of doing both the Chicago and the Marine Corps Marathons this year (they're both in October---about three weeks apart from each other). I'll confess that I have a marathon obsession lately and I really think that I can do this injury-free as long as I train carefully (and I think that tri-s force me to cross-train, preventing typical overuse running injuries. I would treat Chicago like a training run for USMC. USMC opens next week (and sold out in 24 hours last year). Someone talk me off the ledge....... |
![]() ![]() |
Member ![]() ![]() | ![]() Robin, you're nuts...and I like it! I'm running the Marine Corps Half-Marathon in October, Jacksonville Distance classic in November, Jacksonville Bank Marathon in December to train for the Goofy's Race and a Half Challenge in January 2013! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Robin, I echo Aaron~ totally do it!!! I'll make sure you pace yourself properly in Chicago, and Aaron will be there for at least 13.1 in DC. The USMC Mary is on my bucket list. Heck, you're a vet and a patriot- it's your calling! Just make sure you balance the training demands with the family needs |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Do it Robin! Find a third to do within 90 days and then send in your application to be a Marathon Maniac!! I did 4 half marathons in 28 days a few years ago and am a Half Fanatic! Glad you were able to get in your run! |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() You are ALL a terrible, terrible influence---thanks! Now Mariah has me also pondering the Philly Marathon in November..... Today's advice----step away from the Girl Scout cookies (is it also GS cookie season down under, Catie?)

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm proud to say I have not consumed one Girl Scout cookie yet this year. Of course, I should also be ashamed that I have not purchased a box of Girl Scout cookies, either. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey All, I wanted to share a race report from LisaC957- she completed her first ultra marathon on Sunday. She's a long time BT'er and writes some great race reports. Of most interest to all of you I would focus on her nutrition and her psychological well-being. http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=427701 |
