I went to my first tri today! Erhem, I wasn't competing...just volunteering. But it was so much fun! It was a small, local, laid back tri and everyone had a great time. It was nice being able to see everyone having fun, doing their best, and supporting each other. This is the best sport. And I feel way more calm about my tri in a couple of weeks because of seeing how the transition areas and stuff at this one worked.

Definitely great to see how it all works. Glad you feel calm.

Bike is toast. Just a bunch of swim/run for me now. Going to the pool for lap swim. Why is lap swim only an hour and open swim is all day? Not that I can swim for an hour, but with travel and waiting for a lane I usually only get 20-30 minutes (which is plenty). I'll add a 2 mile run.

Friday I got a nice 2 mi. run/ 600 swim/ 2 mi. run. The runs were very hard, especially the second, with some good elevation changes. I love pulling up to the water all huffing then blasting out my swim set, then putting my shoes back on and running past the bewildered shore dwellers. They are all "too cool" teens and 20 y.o. sneaking beers by the lake. I know they snicker at me, because it would be the same thing I'd do if some skinny idiot pulled up with his swim jammers on under his running shorts and started lapping the shore line. If I was 15 years younger I'd be there showing off my underage drinking, flirting, and ridiculing strangers too.

--My coworker admitted to throwing bottles, loose change, words, etc... at bikers on the road. I tried to explain to him how dangerous biking was without people intentionally trying to kill them.

The only thing worse than dealing with dickheads, is remembering my own dickhead behavior. ::sigh::

Lovey - keep on healing!  Great that you can start weight bearing.  I would be going absolutely crazy by now. I have a friend, who when she was in a cast with a broken foot, rented a wheel chair and would "race" around the bike trial. Said it was a fantastic upper body work out.

Steph, I have been deep water running in a therapy pool. (Nice warm water!)  I have belt and recently purchased "water runners". They kinda look like short snow boards that you strap on your feet to create more drag.  Have to work really hard to move those suckers through the water.

Happy weekend everyone!

Gotta get the belt. I my pools here at the building aren't deep enough for the running, but I have a public pool close by too. Can't wait!! Any other tips or hints?

Nothing like a little jury duty to mess up an entire week.

Steph – nice swim workout.  I like the variety, and I feel your pain in the water–swallowing on the weak side. blech

Lovey-nice to hear from you.  Glad to hear you’re on the mend. Smile

Amybecca-LUV your blog! Great photos & congrats on all your successes.  What a fantastic place you live (though I hope you’re not affected by the fires!).  My son goes to school in Greeley, and we try to visit a few times a year, even last Feb when there was 2 ft of snow! (WTH??) Wink  When we win the lottery, there’s a little place in Loveland with our name on it. haha

Susie-fugeddaboudit!  I decided so late to volunteer I barely made it myself!  I needed to participate/spectate in some fashion to a)scope the race for next year; and b)give my slacking mojo a kick start!   I did not hear that the swim course was long, but I did hear that the bike course was way short (like 4 miles) because of the construction related re-route.  And the run course seemed a little messy – very confusing if you missed the 1 sign, and several near collisions due to the Oly/Sprint courses splitting and then merging back together.  Some colorful language ensued, lol.  And your masters class sounds awesome, exactly the reason I joined LT in the first place.  Sadly, the ‘coach’ at VH seems to prefer to assign really long, complicated sets and then go sit in the office.  :p

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Terri

Ugh, nothing worse than paying for a lazy coach.

Good swim this morning.

200 warm up

4 x 200 pull buoy

2 x 100 pull b breathe ONLY every 7 strokes.. no exhale in the water (no bubbles)
- this is the hardest thing I've ever done... holding the breath under water... DAMN that's hard work!

2 x 50 fast, 50 slow no rest

6 x 50 kickboard with 30 seconds rest between

100 cool down.

1500. I forced myself to finish the entire workout.

I know, it's hard to find pools deep enough. The therapy pool I use has a little (and I mean little, about 5 by 12) section of 6 feet deep.  If there are a couple of "older" ladies using the floating noodles, it get a bit crowded.   One thing about water running.  It's VERY BORING!.  I bought an inexpensive water proof MP3 player to help pass the time.

Having a hard time giving all 3 sports equal attention.  My running sucks so I've been really concentrating on that but I'm neglecting the bike. I'm thinking maybe I should just follow a plan.

I know exactly how you feel. The weeks when I have high run mileage, my bike miles suffer. I'm not following a plan, I am just training by feel. I think I have a good handle on a when I should do specific workouts. I research this stuff endlessly. I think I would be making great gains, but work and family time are really "killing" me. I can't be too upset about spending time with the kids, but my hourly wage is hardly sufficient to justify skipping a workout. HOWEVER... my workload is very demanding and sometimes I am wiped out.

OH YEAH-----Yesterday afternoon I turned BOTH my ankles on a trail run. I was approaching a group of hikers and was about to give the "Hey! Hi, on your left" call, when 'snap' goes the foot hinge. Instead of saying "Hi" I said "YOOWWCH" at which point they all turned around and I hobbled past them like nothing was wrong. I just kept running along the trail (to swim in the pond, of course) and five minutes later I turned the other one. Left is swollen nicely, hurts a bunch, but ran (and swam) on it again today. I like to run/swim/run.

Ice, ice, ice, and RICE. And some much needed recovery yoga.

Bike takes up way too much time for me. So I spin instead. After the spin I get on the treadmill. Indoor brick. Spinning or being on a Computrainer is much more efficient than trying to put loads of miles on. The rowing machine is a good substitute for swimming and you can really kick your own arse rowing.

Sometimes you have to do what's more efficient. The plans on here are great. My coach has us in 3 to 4 phases throughout the year. Right now my plan looks like this.

Mon 5:45 am pool swim. Tues 5:45 am bike (I spin instead) Weds 5:45 am Track or Bridge repeats (I do the bridge repeats and skip the track) Thurs: 5:45 Bike again (Spin for me) Friday 5:45am pool swim.

Tuesday/Weds afternoons are an Open Water swim, optional but I'm going to start next week. Monday and Friday mornings, if you don't want to swim you can run instead. There's a bike run brick on Thursdays also in the evening.

Saturday is a bike/run brick. Usually bike drills and speed work followed by a 10 minute run for sprinters, and a longer run for 70.3 and iron racers. Sunday is long run. SLOW SLOW SLOW.

So you see you can really fit whatever you want in there wherever you can. Running is HARD on the body. I have foot issues so I just got a water running belt today. I'm going to start water running once or twice a week so I don't have to pound my body so much. But you must must must run. It is the most 'bang for your buck' fitness wise. More than 3 run workouts a week is overkill (brick running doesn't count)

Run intervals. Run hard, easy, hard, easy. Tempo runs are great. Shorter HARD workouts running are important for your fitness.

4th of July Triathlon was today. It's a short sprint 1/4 mile lake swim (point to point), 10 mile ride (2 loops) and 3 mile run (2 loops). It was hell/fun/torture/gratifying. I seriously paid for my lack of fitness today!! I did the swim the same as last year but I swam almost OFF COURSE! they were whistling at me. I went LEFT. I never go left. I was almost at the shore!!!! so if I would have swum straight, I would have done much better. I got kicked, and blocked and I was ready to drown some people. Gah!

So the bike was good, I kept a 16mph pace and did better than last year. Once I get can to, and maintain 18-20 for 10 miles I'll be happier.

The run, well... this is where the missing workouts and drinking beer will kill you. 44 minutes. Last year was 38. I walked more than I ever have in my life. I was so happy to be DONE!

My friend Gladys did her first Tri at the same race and won 3rd in the Athena division. She is 6 feet tall and 200 pounds. She was a swimmer in college in germany. She did the quarter mile in 6 minutes! Took me 10 (but I think I actually swam WAY further ;-))

She was SO thrilled and it was great to share it!

What's up for the weekend? Races? Long Bike run Bricks?

I'm thinking of going out for a HM in Sept. Additional specific training starts Saturday.

600ish yard continuous OW swim yesterday. Practiced sighting and turning around an imaginary buoy. Found a great rhythm with breathing every 2 strokes to get more O2, with some 3rd stroke breathing thrown in here and there to help relax. The only time I broke form was to tell a dog to stop swimming after me.

Found some swim goggles while cleaning a restroom at work. SCORE!!

Hey Steph, Way to go on the Tri!

I actually got in a couple of OWS in chilly Lake Michigan this week.  Since I can't run but now can bike, I've been trying to ride a lot.  I alternate between my road bike and granny bike so I don't stress my ankle. So far have been riding every day, even in this heat wave we've been experiencing here in Chi-town.  I'm about to head out again.  Time for another sweat fest - Love it!  I like the heat, although I will be crying when the electric bill comes.

SCORE! indeed! that's so funny about the dog, I'm sure he thought it was good fun.

I'm every 4th, I don't bilateral breathe. I know I should, and I try during drills etc. but I am just NO good at it and I get a little tired of swallowing water. I'll keep trying though...I'm sure I look like a porpoise rolling over... ugh.

Do your goggles fog? I have some anti-fog stuff and don't use it. Sure enough on Wednesday, I couldn't see a thing. D'oh!

I can't believe I haven't been to Chicago/Michigan yet this summer. Gah! I bet the Lake feels good when it's this hot. I was looking at the Steelhead 70.3 for my first HIM next year. It's Benton Harbor, MI and my best friend has a place in Harbert.... could happen.

Take it easy miss!!!

Phew! That was HOT!!! Checked my phone and it was 100 and I had 6 miles left in my 40 mile ride.  Got home and went straight into a cold shower.

If I'm back in action next summer, I was thinking about Steelhead since I've done Racine 3 times and I'm darn tired of the @#$! cold water in that race. And talk about hot...last year at Racine it was 98 with 105 heat index during the run. Anyway, thought it was time for something different next season, and the water temperature is much warmer on the Michigan shore. Only problem with Steelhead is that the swim has been cancelled twice (due to hazardous water conditions, high waves and rip currents) within recent years. They turn the race into a duathlon.   We will have to keep in touch regarding this.

Hello everyone...how was everyone's 4th?

Well my ankle is doing better.  I havent ran in about 3 weeks...wow.  It was way too hot for me this week.  Its been in the high 90s, plus with heat index its in the low 100s!  And to make matters worse, I have a 5k tomorrow.  Im not too sure I can hold up in this heat.  Plus there is a little under a mile of the race in the sand along Lake Michigan.

I am not worried about my time...just hoping to finish.

I have to get back on track with my training!

Just wondering what you guys think I should do...

Life got in the way of training the past two weeks. We are renting and there was an apartment fire in our building (and the bomb squad then had to remove thermite from the destroyed unit! The mad scientist in the apartment is still in the burn unit). Basically, this lit a fire (literally) under us to get out of this apartment and I've been househunting like crazy with a 1 and 3 year old in tow. AWESOME! Not a ton of time for training, plus with my state on fire, it's ridiculously smokey and hard to breathe outside. This week was supposed to be my peak training week, with two weeks of taper before my July 22 tri. I'll finish it - I'm not concerned about that at this point - but do I go back and follow my taper schedule even though I didn't peak? (It's not like I'm competing against anyone but myself, but I'm not sure how to resume training!).

Well, you are committed to the Tri, that's good. Maybe do 1 week of taper instead of two. How long is it? Right, Iron Girl Sprint... Unless you are doing an ironman i'm not sure you need that long a taper anyway. Easy workouts, lots of swimming... I think you have a great attitude and I'm proud of you for keeping your head in the game with so much going on. Super woman stuff.

You could also do pre-race warm ups ever other day or even every day... just to practice transitions. Bike 5 miles, run 15 minutes etc.
