New user 38 San Francisco | Subject: RE: Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas : Official Thread SO frustrated at the moment. Brought my bike to the LBS to make sure everything was safe / okay after my crash and to get tuned before the race. I mentioned to them that my pedal felt very wonky (as in off center) on the left side where the impact was and they said they would make sure everything was good to go. Fast forward and I pick the bike up today. I ask about the pedal, guy says he rode the bike and it feels great. I pay, leave and go back to work. I try the bike tonight and the pedal is NOT OKAY. Still wonky. Biggest bummer: I am handing my bike in tomorrow to TriBikeTransport to ship it to Texas and will have no time to take care of the issue until I get there. I am assuming that new pedals will be the solution. Livid. Do you guys know if there is bike service in the IM village? I'd like to have someone more experience than me look at this. |

From what it sounds like some shoddy work. Their is a bike tech at IM Village, here's link. http://www.ironman.com/triathlon/events/ironman/texas/athletes/bike... You may want to give them a call and ask them about it and ensure you can get your bike in right away. If not them, you can ask some other folks here about who they recommend locally that can take a look and perhaps repair. Save all receipts, detailed work order and bring to your LBS and ask for a refund if they missed something obvious. Good luck. Tom #1914 Edited by tallytom 2013-05-08 4:17 AM |

I wouldnt risk it. I would not risk it either. I showed up 2 years ago at 3pm and barely made it through. Be in line by 3pm to be safe. They are not flexible with packet pickup. I think they shut down at 4pm and you can expect a long line late Thursday afternoon. |

Paddy, man, sounds like you've had quite the last couple weeks. The good news is you've taken the steps to make sure everything is working right in advance of shipping the bike. At least you know now that something is wrong so you can take steps to have yourself in position to take care of it before race day rather than finding out on Thursday that there's an issue and scrambling around last minute. Hopefully you've gotten all of this bad stuff out of the way now and will have an uneventful race day! Edited by jte463 2013-05-08 9:25 AM |

I wouldnt risk it. Someone who lives in The Woodlands didn't get to race last year because they didn't think that timeline was a strict one. Don't risk it. |

Both Bike Land and Bike Lane are very close and should have pedals for you. I know they get back logged at this time so I would call ahead and explain the situation. Tell them I sent you. |

LOL....I'm always prepared for a wetsuit swim. Free Speed!!! On a related side note.....how are the lake levels? What about the canal? I know from reading race reports that the canal is shallow which could pose an issue if they are lower than normal. |

They just had CB&I (a sprint) in the lake and I heard no issues. Honestly it's a modified run off/retention lake. The folks in the Woodlands water their yards enough that the drought would have to be awful bad to have lake level issues. |

We are still having issues up here in the Metroplex. Lots of lakes still down 8+ feet. Makes hunting and boating crappy. |

I had a couple questions about the swim maybe some of you would know: - Do you think the lengths of the three sections are about equal: 1. Out, 2. Back, 3. Canal - Is ther room to swim inside the buoys? It's hard to tell from the course map - Any sighting advice? Thanks! Ryan |

Ryan My garmin from last year had it .9 miles out, .9 back, and then .6 up the canal I have lined up to the outside both years, bit in some of the videos I have watching I have seen people swimming just inside the bouy line There is a pavillion, I believe, and t a large antenna array that work pretty well for sighting off of. TJFry had a great write up on the swim, check it out |

Thanks for posting! Is it really only 2-3 feet deep all around the lake? Even in the canal? That's good hip pocket information. it is pretty shallow around the edges.. on the out and back there are quite a few curves and coves on the water's edge so that shallow water may be further away from a kayak if you're in trouble.. in the canal though the edges are shallow and you could grab the walls pretty easy.. just don't make forward progress while hanging on. the water is probably a little higher than last year as i think we've had a few more inches of rain this year, but no data on the depth to back that up. i was out taking photos of the start last year and looking back through them you see a number of folks standing up and walking close to the edge in the first 150-200m.. blurred faces as i am not in the business of embarrassing anyone.. |

Expert 1274 Houston, TX | Subject: RE: Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas : Official Thread jte463 - 2013-05-02 8:22 AM GMAN 19030 - 2013-05-02 7:55 AM rach5928 - 2013-05-02 7:44 AM GMAN 19030 - 2013-05-02 7:31 AM Stude - 2013-05-02 12:09 AM Now I'm a tad pissed at myself after looking at all your training times. Not worried about the run as I've trained and run 6 marathons in last 6 month but just 338 miles on the bike last month worries me even though I did get 614 in March. Also a little worried about 17 miles swimming last month, lots of shorter swims, not many longs. Guess I will have to make up for that in the next 17 days. Don't worry about what others are doing.
Very true. I caught myself comparing everyone's training to mine and got kind of worried myself. I've done what I can with what I had and now I'm just ready to race to the best of my ability which isn't going to be as fast as everyone else on here. But one thing is for sure...I'm going to take in the experience, the good and the bad and enjoy it....well maybe not enjoy all of it, but at least get through it. There are people that average 8 hours/week of training than can finish an IM in 9 hours. There are people that average 24 hours/week that won't break 15 hours. It's all relative to the individual. I remember a race report from one of the previous IMTX races that the person fully admitted they were undertrained to the point that their longest bike ride for the whole training process was less than 70 miles. I don't think that was his intention, but that's how it worked out life-wise and he was still a finisher for his first IM (I think in 16+, but enjoyed the hell out of it)....lots of ways to get through this as GMAN mentions.
Sorry for pulling a post from a week ago (I am back reading through the thread re-living the nervous energy that I had at this time last year)! This was I that went into IMTX last year with realistically probably only 30% of the training volume that my plan called for, longest ride of 69 miles, 1 full IM distance pool swim, and long run of 14 done several times. I am SLOW as it is and then my nutrition plan (if you could call it that) fell all to pieces. I finished in 16:36:12 and every minute of it, including those where I was questioning my sanity and the sanity of those around me, was a complete BLAST! Have fun, enjoy your day, whatever comes at you. No matter how much you have trained or how slow you are, you will have an amazing time that you will remember forever (or until the dementia kicks in). Embrace the pain as it is all worth it in the end! If you are bored at the end of the bike, I will be captaining the last aid station on the course so feel free to say hello as you go screaming by or stop and stay a while! Good luck to everyone in your adventure! |
