ramiedd - 2013-01-23 9:05 AM I have a few questions for the group What type of supplements do you take? daily? before and or after workout etc? I take a multi vitamin in the morning, and sometimes take protein shake after a workout but that is it. How do you approach night workouts. Say 8 PM start? do you have dinner at a certain time and do you take anything after the workout.. I am concerned about taking something that will keep me awake.

I don't take any supplements specific to training.  I do take glucosimine and condrotin because of my shoulder issues and arthritis.  Not sure if it helps or not, but iI will try going without it at the end of the season, until then every day.  I didn't bring it with me here and the shoulder feels kind of clunky.

IF I work out that late, which is rare, but my masters class meets at 8:30 and to get the training load in this year, I am probably going to start those again, I eat a light dinner.   Maybe even a frozen dinner, then when I get home I make myself a little popcorn.  Truthfully, I do best at keeping my weight off when I swim at night, but it is because of the diet.  Unfortunately  I struggle to get to sleep and my next morning workout is sometimes an issue.

I've hit a few bumps in the road this week, too, lots of shifts, and now my gym's pool has a broken pump and is closed!  Grrrrr.  When my plans get disturbed sometimes I get completely derailed.  Need to work on that.  It's not like missing a swim at this point in the season is going to make ANY difference!  So I'll probably do a sufferfest video today on the trainer, and some core strength.

As far as supplements go I don't take much, unless you count the 2 cups of coffee.  I try to take fish oil regularly, but don't remember to very often.  I try to eat at least 5 servings of fruit/veggies a day.

One thing I learned when I was on the strict diet and lost the bulk of my weight was to not get wrapped too tight around missing one day or going a bit overboard on a meal.  Just get up the next day like it never happened and continue on.  Not a big deal, to miss one day or one workout.  This isn't an all or nothing thing we do!

Last full day here, late afternoon flight home tomorrow.  Getting ready to head out for a run.

What is everyone else up to?

It's been a funny week so far. I'm fighting off a cold and living out of the Roosevelt hotel, so doing what i can (running). No swims and less than ideal bike training, but things could be worse. I have a HM this Sunday and its still supposed to be quite cold here. I'm meeting a friend for it, so I'll do it, just not feeling like it will be a great showing at this point.

Be careful Sunday an make sure to get a warmup in so you don't start to fast with extra cold legs.

Heading out for a run then packing up. We have a little time since our flight doesn't leave until 3:30. Depressing looking at the weather at home, but back to reality.I hope you all get your training in today!

I have also been on holiday from work this week. I initially thought, oh good I'll be able to get all my training in without having to rush all the time, but I've found it much harder to motivate myself than usual. It's been really hard to get out of the door (or into the garage). It seems I do better when I'm always trying to get things done before work. Does anyone else have this problem?

Sleep does become an issue for me on the late workouts. Last night I did a trainer session from 9 to 10 and just could not sleep so I am dragging this morning. Since my wife works full time, I try to help her with the kids at night and that is why I have to do the late workouts. When the time changes, I will be able to go out and do some workouts after work which will minimize the late night stuff... I hope..

I'm about 80% at night.  Mostly, during the week I get up at 4am for work.  So working out has me waking up at 3am at least.  I can't do that too often!  I get home at 6pm and try to get in bed by 10, but it's usually not till about 11pm.  By the time I workout/take care of the dogs/make dinner(my wife doesn't cook!)/ and take a shower from my workout, it's time to go bed.

My coach made it clear this week and next are very important.  The last 2 weeks to get in volume before we move to higher intensity.  So I've been trying like hell to hit all the prescribed workouts.  I cut one 2 1/2 hour ride a little short already on Sunday.  I'm still struggling on the diet to hold the prescirbed numbers on the bike.  It's getting me sooooooo frustrated, I just get burned out.  I had to call that one quits.  I've hit the rest of them though.  This weekend should be challenging because my old dog is having problems and I need to get her to vet on Saturday for treatments.  I usually use Saturdays in the winter to actually get normal amounts of sleep!  I'll have to get up early to get everything in.  Hopefully, my wife won't want to go out on Friday night! LOL   I've got my swim bag with me.  Going to try and hit the gym on the way home for a pyramid swim and then go home for some KB workouts!

Never heard of that site...

What are some discount sites people know of? I think we should establish. I know I have used a couple, but I know there are a bunch out there.

the cl y m b.com (no spaces...anyone know why this won't let me post it all together??) is the one i've looked at the most. chainlove.com is another.

I've been trying to hold back on the Reynolds 66 CC's every time they come up! lol

That site, Zee, has spammed BT in the past so they put a block on any posts about it.

I am definitely worn out, but feeling much better this morning after a needed 8 hours of sleep. Even with two days off, but the lack of sleep from my trip was catching up to me.

Well today's another day! I hope you're all feeling well for the upcoming weekend. I myself will be at work.

I finally set up my trainer for the winter and started with the Trainer Road 20 min Threshold Test last night. It seems like an interesting application, and I look forward to seeing improvements with my test results. My first test I was assessed with a 198. I'm not really sure how that falls in terms of my overall fitness but at least its a measuring guide to advance from. One thing about the test, I'm not sure if I pushed hard enough. I'm still trying to realize how to keep enough reserve in the 'tank' to go through my work outs / tests so to finish strong. I did feel a light burn in the legs, but wonder if I should be sore today.

On a different note, I signed up for the my first HIM - the Westchester Toughman. After reading Bill's race report on it, I gave it some thought and figured with the course in my back yard, I can train up for it! I'm comfortable swimming in the Hudson River and don't really mind the bike course (except for that really big hill), but my real goal is to train well enough to tackle the hills on the run. Now, as I said before - I'm looking to destroy hills this year, with each bit of elevation... one foot at time!

Nice John! train up and you'll have a great race at Toughman.  I would do it again if it wasn't the same day as another race.

I just added another HIM to the schedule also, the HITS North County (Lake George) at the end of June.  The bike starts with a 5 mile CAT2 climb.  So I'll be getting reacquainted with the hills come spring as well.

Sounds like a good race from what I have read.

The benefit to the testing and the training is to measure our results and improvement.  Keep us posted how you are doing with it.

bdenehy - 2013-01-25 4:55 PM Welcome home Ken! Are you racing tomorrow?

Thanks Bill!

I may skip this one, it is a nasty course with several hills that are like hills.  I forgot about a meeting at work which would make it a challenge to get there on time, and the most important reason is it is COLD and snowing.  I have lost my friend that does these races with me to a knee injury too. He is going to be out for a while getting it fixed, etc.  So, right now I am not planning on it, but I have changed my mind before.

Thanks Ken. Yes, it's Sunday. To tell the truth, I've got mixed feelings about it. I've been running the course a lot this week since its one of the few places to run in NYC, plus there is the cold. The good news is i fully expect to have a PR time. That's the benefit to having very few running races to my credit. Of course all of this is moot as i have to show up with the bibs of 2 other runners.

Meulen, I have no idea what that thing is that you just bought, but it sounds fast! Enjoy. I love that I started this sport with a bathing suit, shorts, and a Huffy mountain bike that I bought at a garage sale for $20. Do you ever run out of new things to learn, or new things to buy???
