Triing- you are such an inspiration!!! I am doing a triatholon to lose weight and get fit too.
You are Awesome!

Pene- I will look into team in training, thank you. Do you know where they train in Chicago?

I am swimming the alphabet on the wall for each lap, 2 lengths. It is working well.

The Easter bunny got me swim goggles, swim cap and nail polish. The toes have got to look fancy in the pool! I found a wrist watch that fits my ankle!!! I have started timing my .50 mile.

Robb- How was your birthday?

Brian -do you know how to sail?

dolphins rule!
They bump sharks in the bellys and then swim away to protect themselves. You want to be a dolphin they are sooo much smarter and use echolocation. Now thats cool!

Re Music: I'll give you a few of my current faves that make you move (but no laughing allowed): Outkast (Hey Ya, Idlewild Blue, Morris Brown), Gorillaz (I'd agree with Phoenix), Bodyrockers (I like the way you move), The Police (Every little thing, Da do do do, a couple of others off Synchronicity), U2 (Beautiful Day), Beck (Black Tambourine, E-Pro, Girl), Gnarls Barkley (Gone Daddy Gone, Smiling Faces), Gomez (How We Operate, Girlshapedlovedrug), Caesars (Jerk It Out), Jane's Addiction (Nothing Shocking and Ritual de lo Habitual albums), The Vines, The White Stripes, The Teddybears (Punk Rocker, Cobrastyle)...

I'm surprised at how many of these I have, too.

Before anyone laughs too much, ELO's "Mr. Bluesky" is a perfect 7:30 mile for me, and Tom Petty's "Mary Jane's Last Dance" is a nice 8:00 mile pace. I never realized how great music was on a run until my wife bought and programmed the ipod thingy. Anyone else find they sing out loud sometimes?

I am looking forward to my first triathlon coming up on the 14th so I will not be training very heavily this week. I'll probably limit myself to a few miles of running to help loosen up and stay loose prior to the race. Plus, I need to make sure my bike is in working order and my wetsuit is reserved. I'll let you know how things go afterwards.

Good Luck to you all this week.

Sean

Good luck to you, too! Enjoy the week, rest the body, and have a great time on Saturday. Someone once told me, and it's worth repeating, to plan my race and race my plan. You should have a sense of pace, and what you want to do, so don't let yourself get caught up in the moment and go out too fast on your swim. There's plenty of time in one of these to kick it into overdrive.

And remember to smile, and laugh, and compare notes about the weather, transition set-ups, gear, gels, the water... There's a great comraderie among triathletes, which is just as enjoyable as doing the race. Besides, how do you learn if you don't ask questions? And if you don't make friends, who's going to help you zip up your wetsuit?

My kiddos are back home now, thankfully. Their father took them to a park today and went hiking with them. The little one, age 4, couldn't keep up, so Dave just marched on ahead without him and let him scream and cry. So Mose, being an intelligent kid, decided to walk the other direction, perhaps looking for Mom. And Dave, being an ignoramous, just kept plunging ahead, finally noticing that Mose was walking to the highway and ran to him, spanked him and yelled at him, then made him run up a steep hill to catch up with the other kids. A couple in the park observed all this and called the Sheriff, who promptly came out. Well, Dave talked his way out of it (he's good at that) and brought them back to me in my office. Where I got a lecture because all this is apparently MY fault, as I'm raising a four year old with no discipline! Well, it will be a cold day in Hell before he gets to traumatize my Mose like that again! And one day, Mose will be a world famous sprinter and leave his decrepit redbike-hole father behind eating his dust!!!!! Now you know why I took up boxing...............

Sorry, you all are my little therapy for the day

I see you're doing 350 – 10 – 4 so a classic sprint.

Don't go overboard the night before or you'll be wanting to visit the toilet more often than you would otherwise need to (although that is a feature of every race for most people!). Plenty of water the night before (but not too much) and don't try anything new. Now is not the time to find out that those fancy looking gels give you stomach cramps or that you need to drop your guts half an hour after eating a new type of carb bar.

I had pasta splurge the night before. Plain and simple, no chilli or (like one of my friends did, a vast curry), packed my bag for the thirty seventh time and went to bed early. You've done all the training you can and the best thing you can now do is get some sleep. I got up early, got to the venue about an hour and a half before I needed to, drank a bit, peed a lot, drank a bit more and about half an hour before I set off on my swim, had a power bar. The next water was on my bike and thence on the run.

Over that distance, adrenaline is a good substitute for nutrition and people cheering you on is like being injected with energy.

I hope that helps a bit. Just think, after this one you will be an old hand for the one in May!

Malph, good luck on the race! You have come a long way and I know you will do great! Mark is very correct. Don't try anything new and don't overeat, especially on breakfast. I personally made the mistake of having 1/2 dozen eggs, some bacon and toast and juice before a long morning ride, and well...lets just say there was a sequel lol. I usually now just try to eat an apple, maybe a banana, 1/2 a power bar, and some tea. Something that isn't easy to digest, and its going to sit like a brick in you belly.

So yesterday I got yet ANOTHER flat riding lol. This one was my fault though. I was going way to fast and jumped up a curb, and the speed + my fat smashing the rear tire on the curb pretty much exploded the tube. Not to bad as I was a few blocks from my buddies house, who hooked me up with a new tube.

AND yesterday got some sexy new parts for the bike. New front and rear wheels, hubs, and hydraulic disc brakes. They are so much better than V-brakes, I will never go back. Also got a shimano XTR rear derailer, new SRAM chain, 9gear rear cassette, rapid fire shifters, and an aluminum bar/stem. Its like riding a whole new bike I love it, and it cost me practically nothing. :D Next is clipless shoes/peddles and a air/oil fork, and I will turn my $500 bike into a $2000 trail monster

Wow - took me forever to catch up here - have been on the countdown for surgery 4/24 and trying to make sure every last thing shipshape - barely updated my log - now found out today have to reschedule for June - ack!  Psyched up, now psyched down - do it all over in 2 mos.  Oh well.

BGT - You TOTALLY ROCK, girl!!!!!  You SHOULD write a book, or at least an article - maybe for this site??!  Congratulations, you're awesome!

Malph - good luck and pixie dust on your upcoming challenge.

Robb - Congrats on your run!  I love that you wore a hat and sweats - you were the only sensible person there...lol!

Mark - "sent the family off to France" - if you ever decide to add an ancillary cost center, please consider adopting me - I don't eat much and I am well-behaved and housebroken.  Mostly.

Hey Cmckee! Glad you are still alive and kicking! Missed you! Hang in there with the surgery reschedule--I totally can understand why you are frustrated! And thanks for your kind words. It's hard to be a mother, you constantly wonder just how bad you are screwing that job up. My mom always said if they made you pass a test before becoming a parent, no one would be allowed to have kids. It's just hard when I finally get a "break" from them, only to have them subjected to abuse--makes me feel really guilty about enjoying my little weekend of freedom.

Today is a BAD day. The scale went up again. I know it is muscle gain, because my clothes fit the same or better and I can see the definition improving, but it leaves me paranoid! I have perception difficulties about my own body image--I don't always see it objectively. Makes for a rotten day. I may just have to take a sledge hammer to the scale and forget all about numbers!!! (I'm not kidding, someone dare me.....)

I got my hip/leg fixed. finally. I did the roller stretches that Sean recomended and my right SI joint popped into place. Then I soaked in the hottest bath I could stand with epsom salts and worked out the trigger points in the hamstring/leg. And that worked! Sean, you might want to try that???

Rob, you little teaser Well, I'm impressed with your ability to remake your bike. But you will do great even if you have to ride a tricycle! (and wouldn't that be something novel to try!) I'd like to be the first person to do a century ride on one of those oversized trikes (someone dare me to do that, too)

Guess my spunk is sort of coming back. Of course, I'm not as spunky as the Aussies, so, Malph--go get em tiger!! Determination is EVERYTHING!

Got my registration all squared away and my running partner's phone number in LaCrosse. My fundraising manual is in the mail, so I'll have my website going soon. I'm super psyched about the marathon, but also daunted by the fact that every single mile is yet a struggle for me. My only comfort comes from the fact that I can walk it and have 8 whole hours to finish if need be.

Jeannette--you are very sweet! Okay, I'll be a dolphin Team In Training is all over, so just look them up on the web for your state. But if you are already signed up for Accenture, unless you are really into fundraising, I wouldn't sign on. You don't need a bunch of coaching for it--you've already proved you are a triathlete! But a marathon for me--oh yeah, I'm gonna need ALL the coaching they can dish out! It's the hardest thing I've ever agreed to do, and I"m not exaggerating here. But that's my goal--to conquer all my "I can'ts"! Now to get the d%)n scale to WORK with me!!!

Kanders--glad your little daughter is over her ear infection. You have pretty cool taste in music!

Mark, you can adopt me, too. But I'm MUCH more of a problem child than cmckee Actually, I'm thinking of having Oprah adopt me. Hey, she needs an heir! I'd love to have a mom like Oprah--she rocks!!

Prof--eat your chicken soup and get better!

Talking about dolphins- I am swimming more and I looked at Profs log. What is...

8X 300 Drills
2x50 Hypoxic
1950 ladder.

When I swim I do a lot of freestyle but there comes a point when I need to switch to a different swim, how many reps of freestyle and how many reps of other(Back, Turtle, Side) would you reccomend? And at what intervals?

Anyone have a half mile workout plan?

Idea. We are now, I think, a team and as such we should share each other's experiences (or at least the tri based ones!)

At the end of the week Malphh is doing his first tri. Malphh, post your start time and remind us of the distances and we'll all do a bit with you. I know several thousand miles seperate us all but we should pull together.

I know that for some of us the tming will be difficult but let's get those who can do some doing it at the same time.

Any takers?

Pene- you stated that I have allready proved that I am a triathelete. True but that was so long ago, I was in great physical condition and a lot younger. Now Not only Am I Older but like you I had physical complications in the past. I am now cleared to do physical activities but I have gained weight and find it a lot lot harder. My mind says Yes lets run 10 miles today. When I run 2 miles I am Exhausted. I am pushing myself to 3 miles.Well not really running but jogging. My goal in 1 year is 5 miles without walking.

I am a good swimmer though and that knowledge comforts me when I am running. There is this guy that swims really well too and he started doing dead drops at the wall like I was doing and he swallowed a lot of water and came up to me, stopped me in the middle of the lane and said I was one hella swimmer. A dead drop is a flip turn at the cross and not at the wall without pushing off the wall. The trick is to kick extra hard and do threee or four pulls of the arms before breathing. It works the arms more and makes the lungs stronger.

This is the second time I'm trying to post this. That's interesting.

Well, Mark, I'm in for the team Malph idea. Will do the distance but can't promise the timing. Doubt that the Y is open at 4 a.m. or whatever.

Jeannette--You can be proud of yourself for being a good swimmer, being in shape and athletic in the past, and getting back on it now! I was never athletic before, so this is all new. And I'm 40, with all kinds of baggage, and I'm not particularly gifted at anything triathlon related. But I don't care. It's not about being great and winning for me. It's about having the courage to do something that is very hard for me and not comparing myself to others. I don't think your weight is as much an issue as you think. There are folks here that are not a size petite and can absolutely run circles around me energy and mileage wise. I'm praying that the conditioning happens SOON. But, I'm also trying to prepare myself for the possibility that it will always be a struggle for me, but perhaps not quite as much eventually. I'll be cheering for you, girl! It would be really nice to have someone think I'm one helluva anything. (other than strange and borderline neurotic)

Ok, here goes --

8x300 drills: 300 yards is the length, which I'll do 8 times, with a 15 second rest between each. Drills means I'm focusing on something -- either using a kickboard, or a pull buoy (that thing you put betwen your legs to prevent you from kicking), or one-armed swimming, or very long and exaggerated strokes, etc. Or breathing on my non-dominant side (which is my left). As you read more and more articles, you'll find swim training techniques to try out with the hope that they will refine your stroke.

2x50 hypoxic: 50 yards is the length, which I'll do twice, with a minute rest between each. The goal is to do the entire 50 yards underwater, which I was able to do 25 years ago. Now I'll do the first 25, lift my feet up high enough out of the water to do a flip turn, and then pop up to the surface for air soon thereafter and lazily swim the remainder to the wall.

1950 ladder: Swim 300, rest for 15 seconds, swim 275, rest for 15 seconds, swim 250, rest for 15 seconds, etc, each time doing one less length. The total is 1950 yards.

Don't worry about switching to other strokes, as all are allowed in a race. In fact, some training plans specifically tell you to alternate strokes because the change works on different muscles, which leads to overall benefits. Freestyle is quickest, though, so try to keep it the focus. You could alternate 50s, 100s, whatever, with other drills, too.

As for intervals, it depends on what you're trying to accomplish and how fast you are. Try a 20 second rest between each distance -- 50 yards, 20 second rest, 50 yards, 20 second rest -- and see how it goes. If it's too tough, lengthen your rest. If it's too easy, shorten it. The more you swim, the more it all clicks in. My intervals are based upon how I'm feeling, the distances of each set, and if I'm working on speed vs. stamina.

1/2 mile plan: 100 yard warm-up, easy; 2x250 with a 60 second rest between each; 6x50 with different strokes with a 20 second rest between each. That's 900 yards, which should do you well, and the long 250s will work on your endurance.

Good questions. Hope this helped.

Wow Prof! Well, I rest after every length and take a breath with every stroke! Is there any hope for me? Actually, I'm okay with it. My run is just as pitiful. I did 6 miles on my treadmill last night and it only took me 90 minutes. Yes, I walked some of it (quite a bit of it), but my goal was to get my tendons used to the distance, and they did indeed complain pitifully right around 4.5 miles. Even my feet hurt, which they almost never do. And I know it's not even outside, which is a whole 'nother ball game. I just try to tell myself form first, then endurance, then speed. I think I can run/walk the "right" way now, so I'm doing the endurance piece now. Is that reasonable? Or should I just work on doing the little distances ALL run and faster and then work up to the distance. (because maybe it was speed first then endurance and I've got it wrong?)

Where is our Mighty Woman on Wheels Runs Over Duck Feet and Dream Swims Through the Air (your new Indian name)? I used to swim in the air in my dreams, too! It was awesome! (my form even in my dreams was bad, though)
