Alpharetta, Georgia | Subject: RE: Another reason I hate smokers.... Big debate where I live... My opinion is people should be able to smoke as long as it doesn't affect the people around them (public, confined areas). No one should care what you legally do in your car, house, the park, etc. Here's an example I like to give: Have you ever been out to a club/bar/restaurant and drive home that night to realize that your entier body, skin, hair and clothing absolutely REEKS? So bad that you have to immediately strip naked, throw your clothes in the washer and get in the shower so your sheets don't stink? Further, your CAR STILL STINKS IN THE MORNING? To me, this is the equivalent of a non-smoker spraying skunk juice all over a smoker. Something that smells so horribly bad that the person who got sprayed has to literally scrub or wash it away. That's how non-smokers feel. If smokers can't realize this, they are living in a fantasy world. Edited by lisac957 2006-10-26 2:04 PM |

To this, I say stay at home and skip some steps and just do the "naked and shower" parts.... |

Autumn, you are not getting me.. I TOO hate smokers... but I understand it is a right. God what if most people on BT hated polls, then you would have nothing to post.... then where would you be. But instead if they dont want to take the poll they skip the post... Kind of like the "bike porn" thread of the summertime... |

Again, Autumn, I generally agree with you, except when it comes to being outside. If you are outside, then there's nothing stopping you. Inside is an entirely different matter. But outside.....Nope, don't agree. And that was the initial issue. People smoking in their cars or outside. Not in a bar, not in the office, not in the grocery store. Outside. |

So Dr. Mcdreamy you are saying, I am more likely getting lung cancer by eating in a resturant and breathing in second hand smoke once at week at Outback than I would be living in LA or riding my bike in busy traffic behind car and bus exuast??? |

THANK YOU, DEREK! i already posted this above, but just for you trigods, just so you have all your ducks in a row : Secondhand smoke has been classified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a known cause of cancer in humans (Group A carcinogen).2 Secondhand smoke exposure causes disease and premature death in children and adults who do not smoke. Secondhand smoke contains hundreds of chemicals known to be toxic or carcinogenic, including formaldehyde, benzene, vinyl chloride, arsenic ammonia and hydrogen cyanide.3 Secondhand smoke causes approximately 3,400 lung cancer deaths and 22,700-69,600 heart disease deaths in adult nonsmokers in the United States each year.4 A study found that nonsmokers exposed to environmental smoke were 25 percent more likely to have coronary heart diseases compared to nonsmokers not exposed to smoke.5 Nonsmokers exposed to secondhand smoke at work are at increased risk for adverse health effects. Levels of ETS in restaurants and bars were found to be 2 to 5 times higher than in residences with smokers and 2 to 6 times higher than in office workplaces.6 that's just part of the list. the rest is here: http://www.lungusa.org/site/pp.asp?c=dvLUK9O0E&b=35422 |

again I find it hard to believe that 40 minutes in a resturant breathing scond hand smoke is any dangerous than breathing in polution or exaust for the same amount of time. |

Champion 8936 | Subject: RE: Another reason I hate smokers.... That's because it's probably not. The problem is that that is not the original statement you made. If you'd claimed those conditions in your original statement, then it would have been correct. The problem is that those are made up conditions and not realistic in the real world. People exposed to secondhand smoke are exposed for far longer a period of time than those directly exposed to the exhaust of a car. And then we're only talking about long term effects. You wanna go tell the asthmatic who had an asthma attack because of smoke that you think it's ok to smoke around them? trigods - 2006-10-26 2:47 PM again I find it hard to believe that 40 minutes in a resturant breathing scond hand smoke is any dangerous than breathing in polution or exaust for the same amount of time. |
