Hey Shanks

question on my training program starting next week,

I am doing the 20 wek Oly, I have been pretty consistent in my winter training , swimming 3 times a week and running and cycling(trainer) 2-3 times as well with long runs and medium rides on the weekend. My fitness is pretty good right now, better than I thought it would be. Question I have is,

The first few weeks the swim and run are alot less than I am doing now, it is calling for only 750-1000yds and 20 to 30 minutes running. I am doing 1000-1500 yds and 30 -45 minutes run with sometimes 70-90 minutes on the weekend, I feel good after all my workouts so I' don't feel I'm over doing it.. Should I back off and stick to the program or maybe do some more interval stuff during the week. I'm afraid to lose what I've done so far if I back off completely. I could use some work on the bike tough so the programs bike sessions should be fine. Should I change my program or stick with it and adjust it.

Dave

Dave,

Keep your training where its at and wait till the 20 week plan catches up to you! However don't forget to incorporate those recovery weeks that will make you stronger!!

Is anyone else having a problem with snow??? It made me run indoors last week and right now it's snowing a few inches which means the roads will suck and my car isn't built to drive in fresh snow so I can't swim in the morning!! SHAMBLES!

We had a dusting last Monday and about 14 degrees was the high. But the thought of feeling like a hamster in a wheel is more dreadful than the cold and a little snow. So I ran a little over 3 miles.

We got an inch of snow last night in the York area, but driving into work was interesting.   Hallam and the Sequehanna(sp?) valley along 30 got nothing, but then Lancaster got 4 inches.   Where I've been riding my bike got 7 to 8 inches down south of Lancaster, so no riding today.   Since my shoulders/chest are burning from swimming yesterday, I guess I'll use today as a recovery day.

Btw, I had a breakthrough yesterday.   I was grumpy when I got to the pool yesterday morning.  Did my 500m, which still has more stops in it than I would like, but when I got out of the pool I was in a good mood.   I think I'm finally starting to turn the corner on fitness.

Hope everyone is staying warm.   I want more days like last Sunday.  50s are perfect for me.

Living in so called flats lands of Colorado down in the southeast corner the winters are pretty mild. most of this winter we have been in the high 40's to low 70's with a few cold fronts coming in only lasting about a week. Wind is our big issue here.

Stuipd snow and ice won out again!

I missed the swim on Wed am and this morning I ran 12 miles on the treadmill!! Everything was still pretty icy around here so it was safer this way.

Heart Rate. I am always seeing these heart rate monitors what is so important about them I haven't died yet without one.

h2oknine - 2009-02-08 7:07 PM Heart Rate. I am always seeing these heart rate monitors what is so important about them I haven't died yet without one.

Heart Rate training is a good way to "stay within yourself." As in if you're training for a marathon, you'll have training days that are LSD (Long Slow Distance) runs, Tempo runs, and some hard intervals. Using pace goals along with Heart Rate keep you and your body in check.

It's not about "well I haven't died yet" because it's just a smart way to train. It helps you prevent injuries and burnout by keeping you within your limits for certain runs but it also shows you that eventually you can run faster while keeping the same HR as you had a month ago.

Hey Shanks, Are you still taking people? I'm a newbie trying to get in shape for doing an Olympic in October. I've just taken up running and swimming again. I've mainly cycled the last couple of years. I'm currently doing the 20 week Olympic but like the other person, it's less than what I've been doing for the last month.

Hope you guys are liking the weather.   I got to ride 10 miles last night before dark and loved every minute of it.   Going to try running tonight outside, I've walked outside but I've never run more than short burts besides on the treadmill.

haha your name reminds me of the ice cream! mmm ice cream. Sorry I'm a fatty at heart.

Sure, welcome aboard! Which Oly are you doing? Doing that training plan is good and doing it early will help you feel comfortable at the distance before you get there.

I was going to bike outside this AM but caffage from Sunday is keeping me out of the game, I'll suck it up and go out tomorrow and hopefully there will be no "am drizzle" as it says there will be.

Hey Shanks

I feel I might be doing to much, I started my 20 week Oly program last week and as I said in my previous post I felt I was ahead of my schedule. So I continued on doing what I had been doing before. I had been including some hills on the bike some hills on my runs and a  session or 2 in Lactate Threshold zone. But I think I might be doing to much to soon. I 'm not tired or feeling bad but its a long way to go. In my base phase should I just focus on Zone 1 to 3 in my heart rate training and wait for the quality sessions that come into it in the build phase. or should I incorporate some of the other stuff into it once a week per dicipline?

Dave

Hey Shanks,

I'm doing the 3X balanced 20 week program, but where do I put in the weight training? Right now I'm doing it on the off day, and then when there is just the run.
