I just watched the movie Gladiator again last night.  I bet they had some pretty good athletes back them. Something about fighting to the death that would tend to identify the best.

Or going further back, maybe the first caveman who caught and killed a lion with his bare hands...

I am inclined to go with athletes like Kenenisa Bekele, Bjorn Dahlie, and Ole Einar Bjorndalen.

Based on ESPN list USA is trully a blessed nation. It seems to have been blessed with 12 of the 18 greatest athletes in HISTORY despite only having 5% of the globe's population.  And how lucky is it that the greatest atheletes all come from sports popular in the USA. Baseball, Basketball, Football, Golf, etc.

It appears the fairer sex is also the weaker sex and not eligible for this competition. Sorry Paula Newby-Faser, Chrissie Wellington, Babe Didrikson Zaharias - your lack of testicles preculudes you.

As for really foreign sounding people, competing in non-American sports (I'm looking at you Emil Zatopek, Sergei Bubka and Bjorn Dhale) - get real.
