I used to wear a watch but I use a sportcount now.  It keeps the overall time, numbers of laps, and records individual lap times.  Depending on the model it has other cool features as well.  I love it!!

i concur.  don't have to worry about keeping up with lap count and it gives me split times.  best thing i've done for my swim.

I don't take my watch off, but at the pool, I use the big clock on the wall.

I use COUNTU Goal. It's very useful as swimming lap counter and timer. COUNTU Goal has unique function, vibrate alarm function. If you preset a time goal or lap counting goal, it can vibrate to alarm you when you achieve the goal. So the only thing that you need to do in water is swimming, don't worry about timing or lap counting, COUNTU Goal will alarm you at the point.
You can check it at www.countu.net and Believe me ,you will like it.

I swim with my Garmin 920XT.

I hit the lap button to start and end my rest intervals and utilize the 'drill mode' to count laps when I'm kicking or doing non-arm type drills.

Watch,

I use a Garmin 920 or 935 and hit the lap button after each distance. So if I swim a 200 (SCY) I hit the lap button after the 200. Then if I swim 5x100 for example then lap button after each 100. If I don't have my watch them I use the deck clock, there's usually one where I swim. I always swim based on an interval or set rest period. The Garmin 920 and 935 are really good about distance, for a 3,000 yard workout, even with IM work it's usually spot on or off by 25. When it's off it's usually because of an IM set and my fly is so crappy.
