Member 97![]() ![]() ![]() Long Island | Subject: RE: Los Angeles TriathlonI had a few issues with the race, but I didn't let them detract from a great day. First was the swim - I've never done an event in the ocean before - most of my swim training is in a pool, with events in lakes / ponds or the Long Island Sound. That being said, the Pacific Ocean royally kicked my today. About 250 meters in, nausea set in ... and I actually ended up puking my guts out 4 times over the 1500 meters. Every time I put my head down and tried to work on my stroke I felt like death ... so I decided to just swim with my head out of the water, with frequent breaks to combat dizziness. What would usually take me 31 - 32 minutes ended up taking me 48. My other big issue (initially) was the shuttle service. I had purchased a return ticket to Venice, and I ended up staying for the entire ceremony after the race. Upon going to get my bike @ T2 I was told that the final bus was leaving at 1:30 (I still had 10 minutes to make it). Imagine my surprise when the bus took off at 1:22 right infront of me. The bus driver looked me right in the eyes and I held out my ticket. He just shrugged and drove off. Infuriated, I found the race director, he was amazingly sympathetic and understanding an arranged for one of the event photographers to take me back to Venice.
All around a great day (except for my final time), I would love to come back to LA again for this one. |

I hit the expo today...saw Omega, mixie, and hundoracer there! Omega and hundoracer were talking Hunter Kemper's ear off! Honestly, I'm a little more nervous for this race than I was. I am in the LAST wave. Since I am about as back-of-the-pack as it gets, I fear I'll be out there alone for the bike and run! Usually I have waves behind me to help buffer that. Plus, there is a noon cutoff time. I'm expecting to go about three hours, which only gives me a 20 minute window for any unforseen anything or for late start times. I hope if they start late that they bump back that noon time. But, I'm trying not to get discouraged and just have fun. Hope to see you all out there! I'll be there bright and early to watch the pros start! He wanted to listen and he was the one talking our ears off! He new we were BT'ers and wanted out autographs! it was good meeting you too. I hope you had a blast. I would like to read your RR so get it up!

Extreme Veteran 405![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Shakopee, MN | Subject: RE: Los Angeles TriathlonWell, I broke a spoke on this HORRIBLE bike course. The roads are worse then any MN roads and we have salt and snow eating away at the roads. But I guess 100 million crazies driving on the roads do worse! I was 4 minutes away from placing in my heat...super clydes! I COULD HAVE PLACED! This was my last LA triathlon. The price and seperate transitions and the 2 day event are too much for me. My wife didn't come due to the logistics of the race. I missed her. I did PR by 6 minutes though...even with a broken spoke, hillier bike and a 2x hill run!

That was you!? I was on that bus. A couple people were trying to tell the bus driver to stop for you, but frankly, the bus was full. There were empty seats, but no room for more bikes. A couple people even had to stand. I saw the driver from the back looking at you as we turned the corner right in front of you and I thought he was indicating something more positive to you like that we were full and/or you'll need to take the next bus. Well, English wasn't his strong point, and as I think back "shrugging" was all he ever did, even when people tried to give him their tickets. I still have mine. Could have saved $20 and just boarded the bus. Someone had said this was the last one, but I didn't really believe them as the event had only just then wrapped up. Glad to hear the RD took care of you. Hopefully he will fix this flaw for next year. Especially considering the competition he has with the advent of the new Olympic distance tri in Malibu the following week. |

Veteran 217![]() ![]() Redondo Beach, CA | Subject: RE: Los Angeles TriathlonThe race went better than I thought while I was doing it, but a bit slower than I'd wanted. And far more painful than I'd expected. But I still do have to say I feel good about it. I PR'ed from my race 2 years ago by 1:21, but had leg muscle tightening bordering on cramping during the bike, which I've never experienced before. My PR got me 10th in the 50-54 AG, whereas my slower time 2 years ago got me 4th. It's those young punks coming up from the 45-49 AG messing it up for us old guys. The AG winner did 2:12:44! And to think I was only 5 seconds behind him after the swim. I was 2:18 better on my swim this year, 1:18 better on T1, but then gave it all back, and then some, on the bike going 3:44 slower. Fortunately I improved 32 seconds on T2 and 1:13 on the run for a 2:34:35 finish. I can hardly believe the run was as fast as it was, I was really hurting, especially on the 2nd time up the steep hill. Well, next year I get to be the young fast guy as I move up to the 55-59 AG. Of course, 3 of those guys finished ahead of me this year, so I'll still need to get better. There's definitely some more room to improve on the bike & transitions. Hope all the BT'ers enjoyed themselves, and are feeling good about their races. |

It was good to chat with you I think we talked in that long line after the race. I wished I'd known that was you at the time. Seems that's how it goes with me. I meet someone at a tri and later find out they'er a BT'er. Nice talking to you, good luck at Malibu. |
