Uuuh, when I swam in HS we used laps vs lengths. For instance, when we were practicing backstroke starts, we would be told to "start, focus on perfect form, swim one length, practice flipping onto stomach, flip turn and stop. Exit the pool and walk back to start to wait." (I should say, these were lanes that regularly had 6-8 people in them, so circling back wouldn't work when practicing starts.)

In any case, length definitely meant "to the other end" and lap meant "back to where you started." This was a team with a LOT of highly competitive club swimmers as well, and I never heard them call out any discrepancy. I've used those terms with those meanings for many years and never had anyone look at me like WTF?

the really cool thing about finishing the 1600 yards when I was finished I still had plenty of gas left  in the tank and could have kept going.

on may 1st I could not swim 100 yards without stopping

Our YMCA pool (25y) has a sign posted:

1 mile =

72 lengths
36 laps

What I understand:

Length = the long side of the rectangle, regardless of distance.
When first learning how to swim as a kid, the coach would tell us to swim teh WIDTH of the pool, which is the short side of the retangular pool.
Therefore a length of the pool is the long side of the pool.  It may be 20 yards, 25 yards, 25 meters or in the case of a "standard Olympic race pool", 50 meters.

A lap = a circuit/loop/path when you end at the place you begin.  Therefore it would be out and back, regardless of distance.

it's like if you run on a standard track, 400 m is a lap.  If you run 100m, some would say they "did some sprint workouts along the length of the track".

good point. As a distance swimmer I always had a lapcounter, not a length counter.

But to the contrary at all our meets (and now at my kids' meets) the starter introduces each race by saying...

"Event #x approach the blocks...this is a 200 yd freestyle...eachswimmer swims 8 lengths of the pool freestyle...swimmers take your marks...."

Whatever.

So if someone said to you, "Come sit on my lap," you'd consider it the same if they used the word "length" instead?

LMFAO!!

Good one!

I rarely refer to swimming in terms of a length. I often use Height, Width or even Depth.

Tomorrow I am going to swim 72 depths of the pool.
Sunday I intend on swimming 15 circumferences and a radius.
I hope to not swim the graph of cosign in my next open water race.

I've done that swim myself, we called it "bobbing"

Cosign is what you do on a loan for a good friend.  I'd rather swim a cosine in the water than a tangent.

Here's my vote:
We have a 25 yard pool.
25 yards = 1 length
50 yards = 1 lap

I look at it like this a circle is a lap.  Like when you run track you run a lap which brings you back to where you started.
