Here was a nice running training plan that I thought you could consider for preparing for a 5k:
http://waycoolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml

basically a matter of 3 times a week starting at 20-30 minutes of mix.

So I have been pondering what I will wear for the tri.  I feel like I would be very uncomfortable running in a swimsuit and shorts.  Is that what most people do?  Aside from the icky stomach sweat factor, I would prefer to wear a sportsbra.  I was thinking I could either wear one under my suit from the beginning or I could toss one on after the swim.  I was also thinking about getting a 2 piece suit.  That would eliminate the stomach sweat thing and I could also layer a sports bra with that.  Also, tri shorts vs. bike shorts...what's the difference?  I've tried to do some searches on this, but I've had trouble finding detailed descriptions about what women usually wear.

For my first tri, I wore the top of a two piece swimsuit and tri shorts.  You could easily put a sports bra under the top.  I put a jersey on for the bike and the run (over the top of the swim suit), but it is kind of hard to do while wet.

Now I wear a two piece tri suit with a sports bra underneath.   No need to change at all during the race.

Tri shorts are like bike shorts, except that they have a much thinner pad so they dry more quickly and they are more comfortable to run in.  It is really annoying to run in bike shorts because there is usually way too much padding.  A tri top is basically a sleeveless bike jersey, but comes up higher on the neck to help reduce drag during the swim.

If you only buy one piece, definitely go for the tri shorts.

Thanks for the support with my training! I just entered my race report from Saturday's race. It was ok for my first attempt but I exerted way too much energy on the swim and it really hurt my performance on the other events. It was a really windy weekend with choppy water which I was not prepared for. I hope to do better on the next event and as you will be able to see from my race report I have plenty of room for improvement!

Congratulations, triathlete!!!

The first one is always a bit tough, but you made it through and learned some things.  Your next one will be even better.

YAY for the first tri!!!! I think you encountered one of the fun challenges of triathlons in finding the balance of effort for each leg.

Way to kick the summer off right, I still have 2 months still I start getting into the groove of things

Guess what? I may be doing another event on Monday!  I will be camping out from Friday-Sunday afternoon in Southwest VA at the New River Trail State Park and then driving the remainder of the distance to Knoxville to visit my family for a week.

I checked out Trifind this morning and found a Memorial Day sprint that is very close to where my family lives for Monday morning. It is a short 350 m pool swim, 10 mi bike, 2.6 mi run so I figure if I made it through last weekend's event I can surely finish this one. The only thing I can anticipate being a problem is that the event is held near the mountains so the terrain will certainly be more hilly than what I'm used to here in Raleigh but it would probably be another good way to get a little more experience.

Is there a requirement for flip turns in pool races? Since all the races I planned to do this summer were open water I have neglected to learn this skill and will not have time to practice before the race on Monday.

That's great!  Sounds like it will be a fun event for the weekend.

No requirement for flip turns in a pool swim.  I can do flip turns, but usually end up doing open turns during pool tris anyway.  It lets you pass people and be passed, plus I usually don't have enough room to flip.

Don't be afraid of the hills.  If you get a chance, drive the course the day before.  That will help you know if there are any turns near the bottom of the hill and that is really helpful.

So how do pool tris work? Do they just have you swimming in small waves to accomodate all the participants. I know on the entry form it asks for an approximation of swim time. I'm not exactly sure how long it will take me so i thought I would put what I think would be the right estimate and then add a minute or two to that.

They usually seed you by swim time - fastest swimmers start first.  They start the first swimmer, wait 5 - 10 seconds and start the next swimmer.  I've done a few where they wait a minute after every 50 swimmers to help clear some of the congestion.

Don't worry too much about your estimated time.  People tend to be off in either direction, so I think you'll be close to where you should be.

I have my first tri coming up the end of June, and it is a pool swim.  I was planning on getting a tri suit for the June event early enough to swim/bike/run in it a few times before the race.  However, I read somewhere that the chlorine is not good for the suit.  Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I use my tri suit in the pool for pool tris.  I've also used it for practice one day.  It's not so bad as long as you aren't regularly using in the pool - like for everyday swimming.  When you get home after the tri, be sure it wash it in cold water.  So far that seems to be working for me.

I just posted my race report from the Memorial Day tri that I did. I felt a lot better about this one despite remaining at the back of the pack. My training consistancy is truly horrible right now and I need to turn it around if I expect to get faster times. But it was a fun race and I found it to be more enjoyable than the first one.

I think you could probably do a HIM in September.  If you can do the swim and the run, you can work on getting the bike mileage up.

I looked at your training log and one of the things I would say is that you make sure you are consistent with your training.

If your goals are to finish, I think you'll do pretty well.  Finishing in a specific time would be a different story.

Hi all!

Our mentor group has been pretty quiet the past month and I just wanted to write to see how everyone is doing! Anyone have any races in the past few weeks?

I did a swim race a few weeks ago that went pretty well.  I have a tri this weekend - first one in about a year.

I am doing my first tri on Sunday (a sprint).  Nerves have already hit...big time.

Any words of wisdom or just "common sense" tips please forward my way.  I know I will be freaking out Sunday!

Have fun!!!  Enjoy the race and the experience.  Hang around and watch everyone finish.

I would also say try to relax, but I know that is really hard to do.  Pack the night before and then go over it morning of the race.

Can't wait to hear how it goes.

Good Luck on your tris Linda and Jen! I have one on Sunday as well and I had debated skipping it because I haven't been able to fit training time into my schedule. I think I may go ahead and do it as a training exercise and hope for the best. It is a super sprint with 4 transitions: swim 375m, run 1.5 mi, bike 12 mi, run 1.5 mi, swim 375m. The only thing that I've been able to do lately is swimming so I've see some improvement in my stroke technique. The swim for this race is in the ocean so I'm not sure how that will be. It seems when the water conditions are rough that my technique goes out the window and I end up breast stroking instead....

Have fun with your race tomorrow, too, Lindsay!!  Go for it and use it as a training race.  You should be good at transitions after that one!

How did the races go today?

I'm still waiting on my times to be posted, but I know I beat last year's time by at least 10 minutes.  I'm happy about that.
