I went to beddy by 8:30 last night and was out like a light. I feel better today, but I will have some catching up to do with my swims. Maybe I can go Saturday morning.

Wish I had been on swim team in high school! Then I wouldn't stink so much now.

Mcally, it's probably a GREAT thing to have you on here to give us non-fishes some tips. that is, if you don't mind.

This was on the swim chat, and now I'm even more confused. I thought you were *supposed* to allow your ankles up and down free, not keep your toes pointed?

[Writebrained] Should I have them pointed or working like "flippers"? Confused.

[Tri Swim Coach] Yes! Exactly. A lot of triathletes (runners) have inflexible ankles and it slows them down in the water. So ideally you want to not bend your knees much and point your toes when you kick.

Yeah, I wish that I had been on a high school swim team or something like that.  I am really, really slow in the pool - like the second to lowest person in my masters group at the Rose Bowl.  Seriously.  I have been swimming more or less regularly (it is the less regularly that forced me to make this my limiter) since maybe 1999 or 2000.  You would think I would be faster than 2000 meters in an hour.

But the good news is that I was in the pool this morning and did my pitiful 2000 meters and now I feel terrific.

And Susie, I will take any and all for a rooting section at the 2010 Nice Ironman.

Hey, if I did 2,000 meters an hour, I'd be thrilled!

Hey, Team Comet, this isn't my limiter challenge, but I'm starting on my FOURTH day without soda. I'm so happy with myself! I'm finally achieving one of my goals after several months of struggling with it.

Offthegrid - 2008-12-04 8:24 AM Mchally, yowsers - great progress! Any tips to share?

This time last year I peaked at 145lbs.  I am currently down to 115-I think that I was 14 years old the last time I was at this weight.  I am 5'3"

My tricks to loosing weight:
Got off medications that caused me to eat junk food like a pig. (10lbs off) January
Didn't eat foods that my gut doesn't tolerate.
No more Gluten (5lbs off)  February
Worked on being at least a little active (5lbs off)
Did a really short sprint tri with minimal training(fathers day)
-my only goal was to have fun and not injure myself
Became addicted to triathlons
Started doing little training-mainly swimming
Discovered BT
Did a half mile OWS (early August)
Did a more challenging sprint tri- half mile(against the tide) 14 mile bike (really hilly) 3 mile run (rolling hills) (mid August)
Discover my gut doesn't like dairy-No more milk, cheese, ice cream, yogurt....
-I also have to limit foods with citric acid and cannot have anything with MSG.
It took 2 weeks to figure out what the heck I actually could eat(august)
-mostly meat, nuts, soy, an a few gluten free foods that actually taste decent.
-lost a few more lbs because I didn't eat much for 2 weeks.
Discovered the challenge forum(august)
Joined challenge teams to keep myself on track.(Aug.)  -it was the battleship abs challenge.
Even though I didn't finish I got in some good core workouts
Did a minisprint at the subaru women's tri (early sept) and met a BT gal!
Made friends on BT so that I have motivation to do well-and support when things don't go so well.
Did a 25 mile womens fund-raising Bike ride-met 5 BT gals (end of sept)
Did a tri on impulse-a WA BT guy was considering so I said that I would join him.  It was the same course as my first tri so I was curious to see how much progress I'd made.(0ct)
-I took off 24+ minutes Laughing I did walk the run of my first tri though.
Did a 5k trail run with a friend/BTer
Currently I am running 1-3 miles almost everyday before school.

That is about it.  I have only swam once since the last tri and I haven't biked at all (I am not comfortable with biking with all the cars in the rain or in the fog).

Oops-I forgot something...I am working on a horticulture degree and one of my classes includes a bit of grounds work on the campus.  The soil here is hard clay and rocks.  It is often water logged as well.  My tasks have included transplanting several good sized trees-it takes 2 hours of really sweaty and dirty work to get them out.  It also takes a loader or forklift to move them.  the other significant task is planting shrubs and trees.  My tool of choice is the mattock-a pick ax/regular ax with a blade resembling an adz on the reverse side.  That is how I developed my biceps-Let me get a pic for you.

pics of my bicep and of my never before noticeable tricep

and yes, I took the photos in the school restroom.

You too can have them! All it takes is 3 months of 2x 2.5 hour workouts each week digging holes with a shovel and a mattock. For faster results, make sure that it is raining and that the soil is a waterlogged clay, gravel, and rock mixture.

go gluten-free, and I can guarantee you'll lose at least half that. :-)

it's really tough to do, though.

Just finished up another great swim with my tri class.   It was an endurance workout.  I was actually leading the "intermediate" lane tonight which has never happened before.  I'm quite happy

Me, I've been trying to figure out how to lose those last 10 pounds for over 2 years now.

I kind of lucked out. I lost the weight much more quickly than I expected. At this point I would like to put on a bit of muscle and I dream of someday having actual abs.

I will share with you my biggest motivation-I was shocked when I saw this pic. I was crossing the finish line of my second tri.

This is the first time I have shared this pic. I find it embarrassing. I had no idea that my gut and chest migrated that much when I was running.  I now wear 2 sport bras-not that I have that much chest to bounce anymore.  That is the very first place I lose weight-probably 3 lbs.

Ah, isn't it amazing what pics do for us? So many people REFUSE to do the before pics and measurements, then kick themselves when they don't have anything to compare their new selves. You want embarrassing - I have pics of me in breeches. WHITE breeches. Ew. Not that the tan ones were any more flattering.

Hey gang, don't forget to get that spreadsheet updated! The first week ends TODAY, and we want to make sure the standings are accurate. Speaking of, Melissa, are you all set with your goals?

Good morning, Comets.

I was cozily hitting snooze on my alarm, happy and content in bed, sleeping waaaay past when I should have been up, and then I thought of the challenge and got my behind out of bed because I already missed one swim session this week. So, thank you!

And I fulfilled one of my life's goals: I did a 100 IM. I always wished I could do butterfly, but could never make it 25 yards. Well, it was the sloppiest, slowest butterfly in history, but I made it across the pool without drowning. Cool.

Question: What is the purpose of the shark fin drill? Is it kicking on the side? Elbow position? I read about it here on BT and watched a YouTube video of it, but still not sure I get it.

I've been trying to do it, but when I lift the trailing arm up, my head goes underwater, even with fins. Not sure how to correct that.

Most folks could improve arm position in recovery part of their stroke. Shark fin drill helps with that plus balance in the water. I find as my elbow goes up farther forward it upsets my balance a little. How about working on your balance too.
