I just started a new job and I have a one month out of state training, so no swimming until i get back in town. Ouch. I need all the swimming training i can get. I am glad it is only a 400 meter swim |

Champion 7233 | Subject: RE: Ohio State Triathlon : Official Thread hahaha well triathlon swims are full contact sports. the swim is in the 50m olypic pool, you start at one end, swim down, go under the lane line, come back up the next lane, for 400m. if you are unsure of what time you can do, simply go swim a 400yrd TT, and convert the pace into meters. they will give you a start time based on that. that said, if you get there, and are ni better shape than what you submitted or feel like you should start further back, you can move where you start. sense the timing is done by when you cross the start line by the pool, you can really move and start anywhere in the line. i'm really hoping the race goes better for me this year. |

Veteran 162 | Subject: RE: Ohio State Triathlon : Official Thread I dont know what it is but 4 months ago I was supper confident in the swim. Then I get in the pool and it all goes away. I get worn out really fast, and it has made me super worried about the swim..... I feel like a open water swim would be easier? Maybe not Less contact |

Expert 716 | Subject: RE: Ohio State Triathlon : Official Thread Oh no no no, at the OSU Tri, swimmers willl start every 2 seconds, in most if not all open water swims, it is a mass start and its pure choatic madness. The indoor swim will be much more tame, and like David said, figure out your 400 time and swim in that wave, which will be other swimmers in that time range. |

I'm really not trying to promote myself (this time ), but you should check it out at http://theironmountaineer.blogspot.com/2009/01/perspective-cracks-me-up.html. You're not alone... |

Champion 7233 | Subject: RE: Ohio State Triathlon : Official Thread just to go over what everyone else said about the swim: open water swims are a FULL contact sport. think of it like this. anywhere from 50-500 people all start in a 200 foot area, and all have to swim roughly the same line. if you think there wont be contact there, you are in for a serious suprise. people can and do swim over, under, around, and sometimes try and go through you. you can get punched, kicked, smacked, and anything inbetween. this is not in any way meant to scare you, everyone goes through it at some point, and more often than not is no where near this bad, but we have all had our share of ugly swims. just get the training in, figure out what you can realistically do, and start accordingly. you will be fine, and it will be a blast. |

Regular 54 | Subject: RE: Ohio State Triathlon : Official Thread Last year I encountered a very funny quote about open water swims...I'm sorry, I don't have the author, but it was from this site: "First, you're going to get run over. As it's happening, just remember that somewhere out there in the world is a lonely soul who would pay good money to get pummeled by neoprene-wetsuit-wearing strangers, and smile with the knowledge that you're getting the experience for free." Cracked me UP! So, I'm starting again, oddly enough, exactly 13 weeks before the event and the training program is 12 weeks long. I looked through the OSU tri site, but couldn't find the course closing times. Could someone post an official site maybe? It looks like I could still register on active if I wanted to. I'm a good swimmer, but can't maintain 18 mph on the bike, and have never run a single 10 min/mile *fresh* let alone three in succession after biking. Last year I couldn't stand the thought of being swept, quit in March and have been sulking ever since. I'm over that just in time. I know I can cover all the distances. I did the Flying Feather with no training (slow, but I DID jog the whole way), I could do the swim in my sleep, and biking, also slow but it's a bike. Worst case scenario, I coast for a minute. I don't expect 12 weeks of training to do anything, but it'll be a good baseline. And I'm coming to grips with I'll be swept, and I won't die of embarrassment. I see lots of higher end athletes in the this thread, so thought I'd post just in case there are others out there putting the "TRY" in triathlon. Hmm, can I get a 10 min bonus to the bike cutoff if a take the kickstand off my hybrid bike? I have a screwdriver! Edited by Tautery 2009-02-04 11:12 AM |

Champion 7233 | Subject: RE: Ohio State Triathlon : Official Thread trust me, if you can complete the swim easily, that alone with put you FAR ahead of many people. there are people that will walk the entrie run, and go closer to 10mph for the bike, you will be fine. and 12 weeks is a lot of training, will do you a lot of good and get you ready for the day. start training, and i look forward to meeting you there. would be fun to get a BT lunch together after the race or something. |

Master 2014 Ohio | Subject: RE: Ohio State Triathlon : Official Thread Tautery, Earlier in this thread I posted the top 10 times for this race, Here are the times of the last 2 finishers:
First of all, good for these last two for finishing. They toed the line, the did the miles, they are triathletes. My point being, you'll be fine. I think one of these two did the race on a beach cruiser , an OSU squad car following them opening the course up to traffic. I have a feeling they will keep the run course open as long as they need to to get the runners off the course. A quality 12 week program should be fine as long as you follow it and don't take too many unscheduled days off. FWIW, when I started training for triathlons I was an overweight, beer guzzling, cheeto-eating couch potato. I trained for about 18 weeks before my first tri and finished mid-pack. Since you quit in March last year you know the negative thoughts you had and hopefully this year you've come up with a plan on how to avoid those negative thoughts. You'll do just fine. Plan you workouts and workout to your plan. |

Champion 7233 | Subject: RE: Ohio State Triathlon : Official Thread agreed 100% with what david has said. in addition to that, remember, you are still ahead of the millions of people out there that never got up and tried. you may be last, you may come in right in the middle, or even further up, but you took the time to get up, do the work, and see where it goes. give it a shot, see where you land, and go from there. this is a great sport, full of some great people. you will enjoy yourself, and you always need a first race to see where things are and get you hooked! dont worry about what you bring, i saw a guy last year on a BMX bike, with a huge grin on his face. in my first triathlon, i took off after the bike, promtly got a huge cramp, and walked the rest of the run. but the thing is, i was hooked, and decide to see waht i could do about the next one. three years later i am so addicted to this sport its not even funny. come out and give it a shot, this is a very good race for your first. |

2 | Subject: RE: Ohio State Triathlon : Official Thread I just signed up for the event, but had no idea what swim time to put down. I am away on business for a month and not swimming so I just put down 7:45 and hope I don't get drowned in the pool. Is the bike course flat around Ohio State campus? |

Champion 7233 | Subject: RE: Ohio State Triathlon : Official Thread if you think that swim is not ok come race day, just move yourself, your start time is based on when you cross the timing mat and you can move anywhere in the line. i am pretty sure the largest hill on the entire course is almost 8 feet tall. pretty darn flat. |

Whoa! 8 feet!! Better get in some good hill training everyone. (For those new to this site the this is the font that indicates sarcasiam.) At the race they call the athletes out to the start in groups of 50 based on the swim times you put down. the fastest swimmers go first. If you get faster between now and then or put down a faster time than you can actually swim just move yourself up or down a group or two. |

Veteran 162 | Subject: RE: Ohio State Triathlon : Official Thread Ok that makes me feel a little better. I figured we would all be in the pool at once. Now that I know it is 50 or so. It makes it better. I have been in the pool this week and I am getting stronger as the days go by. SO slowly but surely I will be ready for the big day! |

Champion 7233 | Subject: RE: Ohio State Triathlon : Official Thread at any one time there will only be a few people in each lane. remember the race is in 50m pool, not a 25yrd one, so a lot of room to spread people out. they start people every 3-5 sec, so if you start near people your own speed you will never run into another person. |

Extreme Veteran 387 Columbus, Ohio | Subject: RE: Ohio State Triathlon : Official Thread That is if people know their right time for the swim. I passed 3 people in the first 50, and i'm not the fast of swimmer. People under estimate the swim time and usually take time off instead of adding time to the swim. |
