This is my tentative race schedule. There is a half-Ironman on there, but I know that I can't do it unless I get my head together and lose weight.

Right now I can't run for injury, so still debating about the first 5K. It is still a long ways away, however.

Lehigh Valley 5K, May 2
Thundergust (NJ) Sprint Tri, June
Metric Century (doesn't have to be an organized event) - TBD
IMLP spectator/volunteer, July 26
Steelman Oly - Aug. 9
Quakerman Half-Iron, Sept. 12
Women's 5K Classic, Oct. 17

good feedback on schedules. I am very impressed with how everyone fits in the workouts.

my issues:
Well, to be perfectly honest, I'm a newlywed and we are having a lot of problems.

He does not like me to take time away from him to exercise, and in triathlon, it's pretty tough to *never* do night workouts without bike commuting. (I was doing tris when we met, so it's not new.)

He's been a lot better, but he still brings it up once in a while. Right now I'm doing 2 aerobics/weight sessions per week right after work and I don't want to add more than that.

My work DOES provide bike lockers and showers, but I live 16 very hilly miles from work, and the traffic is very heavy. I would need to be a much stronger cyclist before it's realistic for me to bike commute.

I could run over lunch hour and bike in the a.m. once I can run.

Lastly, I've just been lazy with the bike trainer. I can't ride it in the basement because it's a Victorian with a low basement ceiling, and I hate hauling it up the stairs and back down every time. But I know that I need to HTFU with this issue.

I want to keep a lot of swim workouts.

Really at this point I should be swimming M-W-F-S mornings and riding trainer T-TH-Sun mornings. That's going to be my goal next week except for Xmas day.

Leesburg,
Subject: RE: tcovert's Winter 2009 Mentor Group - FULL

Here is what I have scheduled through April:

  • 02.08.09 - Run for the Roses 5K
  • 03.14.09 - Azalea Sprint Triathlon
  • 03.28.09 - Raleigh Rocks Half Marathon
  • 04.18.09 - Falls Lake "5280" OWS
  • 04.19.09 - TOA Centennial Sprint Triathlon
  • 04.25.09 - Angels Among Us 5K
  • I am in a running club here in Raleigh and I will probably run in a few more 5Ks, depending on what shows up on the club calendar.  I think that the triathlon in March will be my most 'nerve-wracking' race because it will be my first tri and the 1 mile ows in April is a hefty goal but it is pushing me to figure out and amp up my swimming.

What are everyone's plans for this weekend?  Any races or scheduled training sessions?  I am thinking that I will run (on the treadmill thanks to the rain!) tonight, bike and then possibly swim tomorrow, and then swim and possibly run on Sunday.

    Aloha

sorry to hear you are having probs but fingers crossed it will work out shortly.

I had a friend with a similar spouse challange. He got round it by pointing out that triathlon kept him looking good for longer and meant he could keep going longer. Sorry to be male and bring it all back to SEX, but it helped him.

On a more practicle note I guess you just got to keep communicating with him and include him in your planning process. It might help if he feels included. You know how jealous us men get.

Susie, does your husband work out too?  I was having issues with my boyfriend due to all of the time constraints that I am under (all of my free time is spent at the gym, outside running/cycling, or in front of my computer studying since I am working on my masters).  One thing that I started doing that seemed to work was incorporating him into my workouts (that sounds a little funny).  For instance, I want to run tonight but he was talking about wanting to go out to dinner and then doing something afterwards.  Well this morning I proposed that we go to the gym together and then continue on with our plans.  That way I get my run in (he usually lifts weights or whatever) and then we get to spend time together.

He is not into running/triathlons/etc and I find that I have to constantly explain that yes, I do need to work out in the morning and yes, I do need to work out at night - but taking him with me and letting him see what it is that I do has definitely helped him understand how much time is needed.

Well it's cold an wet here today so I am going to get the bike out of the shed and get it set up in the front room. (After clearing a space in the mountain of presents. - Surely Santa could organise storage a bit better. I mean honestly - he must have some logistics staff somewhere.)

I'll try an early morning walk Sat and get back on the bike Sat and Sun.

    Also this weekend:-

I will get a plan put together and get it in the log.

I will sort out which weight challange I'm going to join in with.

    I will get weighed.

Hope you all meet this weekends goals and you are all ready for the holiday season. - Paul

OK, here is team code for your logs if you'd like to use it.

If you are not sure how to do this, PM me.

Austin, it does not seem your logs are public?

Oh, wanted to add: He does not currently work out, but always talks about wanting to lose weight, also. I asked if he wants to do the 5K with me in May and he said yes, so I am hopeful that he might work out with me.

He got a road bike last year, but we never did much riding together. He likes to hammer. He does that when we go hiking, too. I think he finds it fun to leave me -- "the athlete" -- in the dust.

    This weekend:
Saturday a.m. go swimming if pool is open (it's snowing like crazy here as I type)
If pool is closed, then do Yoga DVD.

    Sunday a.m., ride bike trainer!

I hate to be stupid but what's a team code? What is it for?  Sorry.

Kathy does to the gym about half the time and walks the tread milll, but the gym is the first thing she drops when things get busy.  Her attitude about my time is that the more time I spend to be healthy, the more time we'll have.  She is 57 and she is taking a mature long view.  Not easy for the young to see that life is fragile.  But there are other sale points, like staying healthy to raise kids, etc.   I wish I could tell you how to convince someone who is supposed to love us to being more open about accepting our needs.  I think their responsibility is accepting us for who we are.  Ours is to do everything we can to make the time we spend together more precious.

It's a male thing - what can you do with us? As they say suck it up and keep on in there even if he does go off way ahead. One day you will be able to leave him in the dust.

When that happens; remember what it felt like and wait for him. Better still do what I did get a tandam for riding with spouse and you can each put in as much energy as you wish. Great for team work and communication. - Paul

Team code is the computer geeks way of copying the team links that you so well designed and displayed into you log Goals if you want some quick links. For us mortals just highlite - copy and paste. It works just as well. - Paul

    Scott,

if you visit our logs, do you see how many of us have a bunch of goals outlined on the top? You can add whatever you wish -- and you can use HTML code if you know how.

To edit your goals, go to your trianing log.

On the left-hand side, you'll see a calendar.

Click on the top icon under "quick links" to take you to your "control panel" where you can edit all sorts of stuff.

Click the "goals" heading, and then you can paste the team code in if you would like.

Check my log to see what I mean.

Let me know if you have any problems - it can be confusing at first, and sometimes still is.

    Susie,

Hang in there with the hubby ... crappy situation, but I promise it will get better with time.  No other way to describe it.

As for me I tend to get very irritable when I'm not active, and guess who is the outlet of that? Yup, the wife.  She LOVES that I'm doing triathlon because I'm way more mellow around her.  Actually, our relationship has really gotten stronger in the past year because of it.  My only advice is to make sure that your family stuff and/or husband time are the priority, and that you need to bend your workout schedule around that.  Not always easy, but I bet you find a way to get into a groove.  Maybe sandwich some errands around your workouts?  I do the grocery shopping at night on my way home from the gym, giving my wife a good 90 minutes to herself to catch up on Y&R and The Hills

This weekend?  2000 meters in the pool tomorrow, move furniture into the garage for having our floors re-done after a recent flooded toilet (courtesy of 2 year old and paper towels in the upstairs toilet), and then the kickoff for the college football bowl season, featuring my alma mater and second wife, the University of Arizona Wildcats as they take on BYU in the Las Vegas Bowl at 5:00pm PST.  First bowl game for us in a miserable 10 years!  As much as I love my family, they will cease to exist at 5:00pm tomorrow evening unless they are watching the game with me

Sunday is a long ride of about 40 to 50 miles (I don't follow pro football, thankfully!), and then we take our 5 year old to The Nutcracker in the evening, followed by a nice dinner.  Time for her to experience a grownup night out without her little brother.

I've got to say, I'm loving this group already.  Lots of dysfunction--myself included--lots of good advice and lots of support.  Thanks everyone!

Side note/question:  Anyone else on Facebook ?

That is really cool. I'd love to go sky diving one day. It's one of the things I considered doing as my reward if I get to 175 pounds (never been below 190 ever. not even in like junior high).

My sometimes-training partner is an expert sky diver.
